I'd say he's #1

but that could change if Dirk was surrounded with great talent like Kobe was surrounded with

then Dirk could go to the Finals more and choke more often and steal the title from Kobe

If The lakers win this series, kobe should be known as the only guy who could win the chip with toilet paper as his teammates. twice

They only look like "toilet paper" because as soon as things go bad Kobe panics and feels like he has to take over. Idk if you've ever played basketball or not, but if you have some guy on your team that just dominates the ball you start to get frustrated and really just lose interest.

If Kobe maintains a 45% FG and 30 PPG to close the series, then its not on him. Id put the blame on Artest, Bynum and even Fisher for not helping Kobe and Pau.

I wasn't gonna vote 1, cuz that's Dirk, but the poll left no other reasonable choice

No way you can put tonight on Kobe. The rest of the series is fair game, but Kobe was the only reason the Lakers didn't get destroyed by 20.

Well if there's no other reasonable choice you vote for Kobe

To be hyped up as much as he is about him being a stone cold assassin or the black mamba or whatever, he sure has a knack for laying turds.

4-12 at the half

team not into the game, lack of focus, no momentum, no team chemistry

shooting much better in the 2nd half, but still ball hogging.

The "team" had its chance to get in the fucking game from the start. They began to lay an egg. If kobe hadn't got hot in the third and distributed more, lakers would have gotten blown out. Then everyone would just blame kobe for quitting.

Bryant is definitely the biggest Finals choker. He has a TON of talent flanking him, but he doesn't elevate their play. He doesn't make them better.

Bryant's style of play is selfish. Everybody knows the Lakers are a better team when Bryant scores 20-25, and gets 7+ assists. Thing is, despite the talent around him, that's hard for him to do. He just doesn't play that way. He is an individual performer in a team game.

Bryant is a scorer, not a "great basketball player." Boston has four guys who are all very good individual players, but they know that playing together as a team will get them further. Bryant still hasn't figured that out yet.

By the way, as hot as Bryant was tonight, he still didn't shoot 50% from the field, nor has he been able to do that in any game this series.

This series so far isn't about what Kobe is doing wrong, or his supporting cast is doing wrong.... it is about the greatness of the Celtics.

and Kobe's supporting cast is overrated. Bynum/Odom are inconsistent, Artest is a flawed offensive player, and Fisher save that 1 game is showing why people were complaining about him all year. Bench ain't nothin to call home about either... who on the Lakers bench would be capable of having performance like Nasty Nate/Glen Davis in Game 4? Nobody comes to mind.

What's crazy is some of you actually believe this shit.

Any other superstar player in the league who had the game Kobe had yesterday would be praised for doing everything he could do to keep his team in the game. Kobe gets shitted on for not allowing his teammates to get involved. Did you watch how shitty his teammates were playing? It's not Kobe. Kobe does pass the ball, and he gets called out for not trying to take over. He takes over and gets called unselfish. No other player in the league gets that type of unrelenting and unabashed hate. It's beyond comical.

Kobe shoots a poor percentage from the field. He doesn't care. The last two games he's shot 47% from the field and is the only reason the Lakers even had a chance in either game, and he still gets bashed. Pretty much par for the course from Kobe haters though.

Kobe can't pull Pau's head out of his ass. Kobe can't dangle Kloe's pussy in front of Lamar on the court. Kobe can't give Ron Artest a brain transplant.

Yes, I'm a Kobe apologist. Admittedly so. But some of you Kobe haters can't accept how deranged your Kobe hate logic is.

Some of them are trolling. And this question can be deduced as "All-time Finals chokers", which also essentially means 2004 and 2008. Kobe did all he could on game 5, still not enough. With the exception of that 3rd quarter burst, he did play subpar for his standards, especially in the 1st half. By the way, check your PM.

This isnt by my standards either. Its by his standards as well. Tell me he doesnt look in the mirror everyday and say to himself hes the greatest of all time. He has to believe it in his heart but if he comes up short for the 3rd TIME in the Finals with HCA, and a damn good supporting cast. I would classify it under Failure buddy.

So would he. The guy is the face of all that is basketball today and looks to one day be revered as such MJ,Magic and Bird. But none of those guys have come up short like Kobe has in the Finals. Sure they have lost before but they have Finals series where they have won the game by themselves. They didnt need help in the 4th qurarter from their inferior PG. Fisher is the one with the balls of steel in the 4th quarter it seems. Not Kobe

Tim hasnt been to back to back Finals so I wouldnt classify it as failure to me as a Spurs fan.

Spurs fans nor the media propogates Duncan over than what he has done. Best PF ever is already in stone. Everyone knows it. Its undebatable.

However, Kobe cant even get past best Laker ever. Maybe one day hell do it statistically but deep down everyone knows he's 2nd or 3rd to Kareem and Magic.

No Spur fan expects anymore from Duncan. 4 rings is enough. 2 MVP's is enough. He did it all by himself. No EQUAL superstar to him for all 4 runs. Sure a damn good team but no high profile superstar such as himself.

Kobe's first 3 rings are Shaqs. Lets be real.

I don't think this series is Kobe's fault. He played a hell of a game last night, and no one else on his team showed up. Kobe was visibly pissed, and he had the right to be.

It's like last year when Bonner and Mason didn't show up for the playoffs. It wasn't Duncan and Parker's fault, those guys showed up to play, Bonner and Mason didn't.

It's stupid to blast Kobe because his teammates are no shows.

BUMP
06-14-2010, 11:36 AM
bottom line is this......

Kobe is easily the best player in this series.

But, how did the Lakers get here? By Kobe chucking up 30 shots a game?

No, they play through Gasol, Odom, Bynum and the other guys. Now that Kobe is so close to his 5th he thinks he needs to prove a message. He is such a great talent that he will make some of those impossible shots but he doesn't shoot a great percentage and it just hurts the team.

You can't dominate the offense and then all of a sudden expect your teammates to turn it on after you've tuned them out all game. They're already out of their rhythm. The Lakers are at their best when Gasol is getting 20, Bynum getting 10, Odom 15, and Artest around 10. That's the only way they'll win this series, but unfortunately I can't see Kobe getting past his ego and you know he's gonna want to put on a show in front of their home crowd which will end in their demise.

Kobe went on a tear but then he jacked up every shot possible when they pulled in close with his onslaught of points. He should have started dishing it when they got close and they were doubling him off the picks and on the perimeter. Instead he decides to jack it up in triple team

yah he shoulda passed it out to Artest and Odom for the THREE! Or maybe to Gasol so he can shoot a jumpshot.

what do you expect him to do? pass it to a mediocre player so he can miss it? well KB can shot it and probably has a better shot of making it. :wakeup

bottom line is this......

Kobe is easily the best player in this series.

But, how did the Lakers get here? By Kobe chucking up 30 shots a game?

LA got to the Finals by playing sissy teams that they bullied into submission with their size and length. Now the shoe is on the other foot. LA are the ones getting bullied...Kobe included. Other than his 7 minute hot streak against Ray Allen the rest of the game he played like shit with turnovers, shitty rotations on defense, and dumb fouls. Tony Allen is bullying his ass all over the place and getting him out of his comfort spots just like Wallace, Big Baby, and Garnett are doing to Gasol.

LA is at their absolute best when everyone is moving and Kobe is mixing up the offense either getting quality shots or getting into the paint drawing attention and finding one of his bigs diving to the rim for an easy two. When is the last time you saw Kobe get in the paint and kick it to Pau right at the rim for an easy bucket? LA did that shit constantly against 6'9 wonders Amare and Boozer and whatever no-name OKC had but you don't see any of that against the Celtics. Boston has turned LA's offense completely stagnant where it's come to the point where even a simple pass is difficult and as a result there's a lot more one on one ball than usual. You can see in every game as this series goes on the Lakers are wearing down mentally and physically. The Celtics are slow-cooking their asses.

And yes, Phil Jackson is getting out-coached because he can see what I'm seeing but so far hasn't done a damn thing about it. I'm guessing he's depending on HCA as well.

Once Kobe got in his zone, he went into complete scoring mode last night. Once the Celtics keyed in on this, he never went back to creating mode. Even if your teammates are playing badly, its still MUCH better to go with Gasol taking and potentially missing a shot going 1-on-1 against Big Baby or Jordan Farmar getting a shot at a wide open three, as opposed to driving into 4 guys and expecting to consistently score. its better to create high percentage shots for others (even if they may not be playing well), as opposed to taking and missing low percentage shots. all it takes is for 1 shot to go down for someone to get going, and all it takes is 1 miss for someone to go cold. the latter was shown last night, as after kobe went on his hot streak, and then launched a long 3 that went in and out, and suddenly his streak was over and he went to missing all those tough shots he was hitting at first.

Gasol getting a measly 12 attempts is unacceptable. Kobe missing more shots than any other player took in total, is unacceptable. and that falls on Kobe. its his job to get the best out of his team, especially being the high profile player that he is. instead of trying to get his teammates hot by giving them their wide open looks, and allowing people to shoot high percentage shots, he resorted to taking a plethora of low percentage shots, simply because he was "feeling it" for a while. especially against a dominant defensive team like the Celtics.

granted, it wasnt entirely kobes fault that the Lakers lost, but he definitely had an equally big part in the lakers losing, as he did in keeping them alive when he was on fire for a bit.

That falls on Phil Jackson more than Kobe. I said before this series even started that this was an unfavorable matchup for Gasol because of all the bodies Boston can throw at him...and even moreso now that Bynum isn't getting consistent minutes. Pau can't score one on one consistently against these guys in the paint and shouldn't be expected to be. Wallace and KG can match him in length. Big Baby weighs a ton and has nimble feet so Pau can't back him down. Perkins is just a brick wall. And even when Pau does make a move and get to the rim he usually has 2 Celtics waiting for him to alter the shot or stuff it back down his throat. Rather than try to post Pau up against that physical Celtic defense they need to get Gasol on the move and make Boston's defense react. Put Kobe and Pau in the pick and roll and have him either dive to the rim or get to a good spot for a midrange jumper. Just get those Celtic bigs off his ass. It'll have him more involved in the offense where he isn't just standing around and will also give Kobe a more direct target to pass to if he gets up in the air and has nowhere to go. Phil Jackson hasn't made any adjustments whatsoever to counter Boston's defense.

Hey, lets be honest guys. Celtics are just the better team this year.
LOOK at what they did to these teams that were favored to win the series.
Cavs-played very well and got Lebron out of a rhythm. Played great defense
Magic-Got the other players like Lewis, Barnes, and Carter out of a rhythm a few games. Did not hurt that they played exceptional defense.
Lakers-Did what the Suns basically did, but more defense. They let Kobe try to win the game for the Lakers and get other players cold from the field.
I know alot do not like giving the Celtics any credit, but there's no way that they do so well against arguably the best 3 NBA teams in the league before the playoffs.

You win OR you lose. That's it. It's over. You simply go back to the drawing board, get more of yer'n and try to be there'n. That's what Magic did after the calamity of '84. That's what Kobe will face 26 years later if we can't end them by Thursday nite.

No, but you dont take double/triple team shots when Odom/Gasol/Artest is open. Well maybe dont pass it to Artest, but pass it to Odom or Gasol if your triple teamed instead of jacking it up.

Exactly. Yet the David Stern's PR machine has shoved down our throats that somehow those three rings were Bryant's. Well if so, who won the MVP all three years? Who averaged over 35 and 15 in the finals over that three-year stretch?

Bryant scored 38 in one game last night (a loss, at that) and now he's the greatest player ever to play. Dude, Shaquille practically averaged that over three straight Finals from 2000-2002.

Win or lose, Kobe Finals MVP?
PER Diem: June 14, 2010

Hollinger By John Hollinger
ESPN.com

BOSTON -- In an odd Finals filled with statistical oddities and in which each game has borne virtually no resemblance to its predecessor, it's perhaps fitting that through five games we're left with another unusual situation: There is no clear-cut choice for series MVP. In fact, if Boston were to close things out with a win in Game 6 on Tuesday, as many as four Celtics could garner serious consideration.

Of course, the MVP doesn't have to come from the winning team. While this isn't the letter of the rule it's been an unwritten law for the past four decades -- every Finals MVP since 1969 has come from the winning team. Alas, every rule has its exception, and after Sunday night's 38-point effort we may be looking at one in the form of Kobe Bryant.

While the Celtics deserve their 3-2 lead in the series, there's no question who the best player has been over these first five games. That point was driven home with a sledgehammer in Game 5 when Bryant scored 19 points in the third quarter only to find the Celtics' lead had increased when he was done.

This continued a Finals in which Bryant has had at least 20 points in every game, has had only one game that possibly could be construed as somewhere close to ordinary (Game 2), and has had a pair (Games 1 and 5) in which he was absolutely spectacular.

For the series, Bryant is averaging 30.2 points per game; no other player is averaging more than 19. He's done it reasonably efficiently too, with a 55.2 true shooting percentage in a series in which the average has been 53.4. That's amazing considering the difficulty of the attempts he's taken, especially in Game 5.

Bryant has filled the stat sheet in various and sundry other ways, too. Bryant leads all Finals players in steals, is second in assists and has yanked down six rebounds a game. About the only quibble one could make is that he's been a bit turnover-prone; of course, he's playing against the league's top turnover-forcing defense, so this shouldn't come as a huge shock.

And while the league doesn't award extra points for degree of difficulty, part of the reason Bryant has been forced into such challenging attempts is how little help he's received from the cavalry. Again, this point was hammered into our consciousness in the second half of Game 5 -- Pau Gasol was the only Lakers starter to score a basket after halftime, and the Spaniard's play was positively repulsive throughout (among his other assorted flubs, did anyone else catch him standing in the paint watching as Nate Robinson flew by for an easy fourth-quarter layup?).

If you're not sold on Bryant's MVP case yet, then consider the alternative. If not Kobe, who?

Quote:The fact is Bryant has been by far the most productive player, and the only reason the Celtics are ahead is because five of the next six best players (the four above and supersub Glen Davis) have been wearing green. If series MVP voters are using their heads and not their hearts, Bryant is an obvious pick even with his team trailing.

There's an irony here, of course. I mentioned above that only one player has won Finals MVP in a losing effort; it was Bryant's idol and mentor, former Lakers star Jerry West. Wait, there's more. It came in the 1969 Finals … against the Celtics … against a veteran Boston team, in fact, that had won only 48 games and was seeded just fourth in the Eastern Conference at the start of the playoffs. L.A. ended up losing Game 7 at home despite 42 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists from West.

A lot of water still has to go under the bridge for Kobe to join West, but suffice it to say that if Kobe goes for 42, 13 and 12 in a losing effort in the finale the award is probably his regardless of what anyone on the Celtics does.

Of course, Kobe would only join West if the Lakers did, in fact, lose the series. He could also go down in history more happily if the Lakers win the final two games. At this point I'd say it's a foregone conclusion that he'll win the award if that happens, with Gasol having essentially eliminated himself from further consideration with his performances in Games 4 and 5 and no other player coming close to Bryant statistically.

If Kobe wins Finals MVP (I dont think he will) then he'll probably be off the hook. If he continues his superb play in Game 6 and/or 7, then no one can fault him in this series. 2004 and 2008 however is on him.
