It's been discussed in the Nando thread in the Think Tank. Extremely unlikely due to FIBA rules and French NT commitments.

Rosters have yet to be finalized, but the Spurs' entry is likely to include as many as four players who were on the team's 15-man roster to close the season -- Alonzo Gee, Malik Hairston, Garrett Temple and Curtis Jerrells -- as well as their pick(s) from the June draft.

Second-year center-forward DeJuan Blair is not scheduled to participate, with Spurs management devising a summer centered around individual work for him.

Looking for a team.

Catching up with Jack McClinton and Ricky Harris (http://www.miaasports.net/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=3590)
6/11/2010

Earlier this week Joe DiBlasi caught up with former Calvert Hall basketball stars Jack McClinton and Ricky Harris, who were both at their high school alma mater working out as both continue their quest to catch on with an NBA franchise.

McClinton came out of the University of Miami following the 2008-2009 season, where he set the ACC mark for three-point field goal percentage and was second in league history in free throw percentage. He was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, but eventually played his first professional season in Europe. He has a tryout scheduled with the Toronto Raptors and is considering several offers to play summer ball with NBA teams.

Anyone have any input on whether the $10.95 is worth it? I think I had heard that video quality was poor last year. Does it seem like they are trying harder this year; e.g., did they have features like DVR and archives last year?

ChumpDumper
06-26-2010, 02:39 PM
They had archives last year but no DVR. If they are using the same technology they did in the D-League this past season, it should be ok although the quality did vary from town to town.

I already bought it, so I'll let you know a couple of days before the Spurs play.

COLLEGE STATION -- Aggie basketball players Bryan Davis and Donald Sloan did not get selected in Thursday's NBA Draft, but will get their shot to play in the league.

Davis will join the San Antonio Spurs summer league squad when they begin play in Las Vegas on July 9th.

Davis averaged 9.6 Points and led the Aggies with 8.1 Rebounds a game his senior season.

Donald Sloan is headed to Sacramento and the Kings will also take part in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Sloan led A&M with nearly 18 points per game and was second on the team in assists.

http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2010/6/28/1540775/nba-summer-league-rosters-vegas

San Antonio Spurs Summer League Roster

PG - Garrett Temple, Curtis Jerrells

SG - Malik Hairston

SF - Alonzo Gee

PF - DeJuan Blair, James Gist, Bryan Davis

C - Ryan Richards

Coach - Mike Budenholzer

San Antonio Spurs Summer League Schedule - 7/12 vs Minnesota, 7/14 vs Atlanta, 7/15 vs Lakers, 7/17 vs Clippers, 7/18 vs Memphis

Mr.Bottomtooth

Just wondering. How should the Spurs evaluate everybody at Summer League? They have 5 people under contract, two second rounders, and possibly Anderson. Not everyone is going to shine, or even put up decent stats, especially considering this isn't even the full roster. While the player(s) who put up great stats will give them at least a little clearer image of the future, how would they evaluate those who don't play as well or as much? Since it's not so easy to project how a player would've done in other scenarios or with more minutes.

HarlemHeat37
07-04-2010, 06:32 PM
It's a tough question, because this team is pretty stacked from a Summer League caliber standpoint..they really need to evaluate Hairston, Gee and Temple..they're gonna have to get Blair some touches, obviously, but I don't think he even ends up playing in every game TBH..

I would guess Richards will be more of a catch and finisher type, and playing the garbage man role..

I would assume Hairston and Gee will also be put into defensive assignment roles(Temple as well, although there aren't as many good PGs in the SL)..

Ellington, Wesley Johnson, Flynn, Aminu, OJ Mayo and Xavier Henry should be good tests, off the top of the head..

The last year of the Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City was 2008. It was canceled in 2009 due to monetary issues and a dwindling roster of teams. They talked about bringing it back for this summer, but ultimately decided against it. It's possible it will be resurrected in the future, but probably not next year due to lockout concerns.

If Splitter is signed on the 8th, what are the odds he'll play in SL? I don't see much of a point to him playing, SL would be way bellow him, and take away from Blair/Richards getting quality PT. Scratch that, Blair doesn't really need quality PT in the SL, he's already proven himself.

I might pay ten bucks to see Splitter play in SL. But I'd rather just read everyone's takes, I'll be too busy with work and school to watch a lot of the games, even with the archive.

Paul George just showed why he will be a great player in the future: Today he was not shooting well like 4-19 yet he was still competing on the defensive end and was getting to the FT line (perfect for the day). You could tell he was frustrated by his shot not falling (I'm not sure if he made a change it his shot from what I saw in youtube, but he now has something the resembles a SJAX shot that is someone I would compare George to).

Anyway the Celtics had a chance to put the game away and go up 4 but George got the steal off a bounce pass and Pacers called at TO. You would figure since he is shooting well, they Pacers wouldn't run a play for him but out the TO they run an inbound play for him. He gets free off a screen and receives the ball in the left corner, goes baseline and gets the reverse lay up and the and 1. He makes the FT, putting the Pacers up 1. The Cs have trouble getting the ball in and barely get out of the backcourt and end up with a bad shot at the buzzer.

It was a great redemption play for George, to play that bad offensively the entire game, yet have the ball in your hand to tie or win the game and he does just that.

He has a bright future.

George definitely did not have one of his better games today. He started out well, but looked kind of fatigued from the second quarter onward. He was a little sloppier than usual, and his defense against Acie Law IV was far from what I've been used to seeing from Hill. Acie was able to get past him several times on the drive, and he was the first guy I think I've seen get past Hill more than once. Hill does a good job of recovering when he gets beat initially (more on that in a second).

Despite the poor game, Hill came up big in clutch time. Spurs were down one with about 20 seconds to go. True to typical Spurs form, they had Hill dribble the ball between the circles and sent everyone else off to the wings on an iso play. Hill made a good move to get into the lane, almost lost the ball for a second, but then recovered and went up strong near the hoop, drawing the foul. He hit two clutch free throws to put the Spurs up 1, 83-82. Hawks got the ball with 6.9 seconds left and, after using a timeout, ran a similar iso play for Acie Law. Hill let Law penetrate all the way to within 5 feet of the hoop, but when Acie went up for the shot, Hill got all ball and got the jump ball call with 2.0 seconds left. (Side note: Hill blocks a very good amount of shots for someone his size, especially on help defense.) On the jump ball, Acie Law didn't really seem to try for some reason; Hill did the smart thing and knocked the ball to the other side of the court, and time expired before the ball went out of bounds.

....Sorry, what? You weren't talking about George Hill? :)

Not particularly surprised. I currently expect him to be in Europe for another year or two; he's just too raw to spend a roster spot on. Unlike Mahinmi, they can't lock him in (up to 4 years of rookie contract), without spending part of the MLE. Therefore if he turned out good in the D-league (in a 1 year contract) he would be a FA without the Spurs having any rights. Even if he was on a 2 year contract, we would only have limited bird rights. I predict they will leave him in Europe a la Tiago until either they have some MLE money available to bring him over on a contract with long term practicality for the Spurs.

San Antonio Spurs

DeJuan Blair: There's nothing unusual about seeing a second-round draft pick with only one year under his belt on a Summer League roster. What is unusual is when it's the player -- an All-NBA rookie no less -- who insists he report to Las Vegas, despite management's blessing to stay home.
Alonzo Gee: The small forward out of Alabama earned D-League Rookie of the Year honors with Austin, then recorded a double-double in his fifth NBA game after getting a call-up from Washington. The Spurs have some room on the depth chart at the wing, and a standout performance by Gee could earn him a closer look in training camp.
Garrett Temple: When Temple played with the Rockets' squad last summer, he displayed a combination of intelligence and competitiveness that said, "NBA player." Sure enough, the undrafted Temple earned four 10-day contracts (two with Houston, one with Sacramento and one with San Antonio). After a terrific March, Temple signed on with San Antonio for the remainder of the season.

I won't rule out Ryan Richards of the SL.

It's possible that Spurs have waited to solve the Splitter case to know if some of their MLE was left to sign him to a 3 years contract. If Splitter is signed this Monday, I expect Richards to be signed just after him and play Spurs' SL second game on July 14th.

“Pop told me he wanted me to learn the four, and that's what I want to do,” Blair said. “It's all about developing, so the more I can play, the more I can get better.”

“We're going to encourage him to shoot when he's open,” Budenholzer said. “He might miss 10 shots in a row, and we're going to tell him to shoot again, and then shoot again. Take what the defense gives him.

Blair said his primary goal this week will be working on the basics of the Spurs' defensive scheme — this time away from the basket.

Spurs' SL team features a lot of players in Spurs pipeline (Gee, Temple, Gist, Jerrells, Blair and Hairston in the initial roster). It's logical that Spurs have very few interesting players outside them.

Agents are looking at SL teams where their clients can get an opportunity to shine. With most of the playing time and shots taken by players still in the pipeline, Spurs wasn't the best place for that.

Another matchup that will be intersting is jerrels vs. flynn. Jerrels needs to prove he can play some D and Flynn is not the easiest guy to contain. So with Gee vs. Johnson and Jerrels vs. Flynn should be a fun game to watch (even though it will not be aired until 0300).

Latest Monroe article says the Spurs gave Hairston a deliberate pass this year b/c they were comfortable with what he has brought in the past. Looks like his roster spot is the most secure of the non-guaranteeds.

I just read that as well. Apparently they like his game and don't see how summer league will change their opinions.

Just noticed that Jack McClinton is playing for the Bulls and performed much better than he did for us lol. 8 points 3-5 fg 1-2 3pt in 10 minutes.

After watching Jerrells I just don't see him being a PG at this point I think we could find better prospects to take over for him.

Pg. Mat Bouldin 6"5
Pg. Aj Slaughter - thrives in the pick and roll

If you're talking about a spot on the Spurs' regular season roster, don't worry about it. He won't be there.

Question: Can we add to the roster to replace injured players during the summer league? For example, given that Temple is injured, could Malik Hairston be asked to show up suddenly?

Yeah, there's basically no set of rules governing summer league rosters.
