I figure if there can be a Texans thread already, bring on the Cowboys...

Might as well start it out with a Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Wide receiver Patrick Crayton (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6975/;_ylt=ApQC.1sktDTBCcvB_4z5FKbsrZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6975/news;_ylt=AhP.RTNFntgGu_rKSGfdZJ_srZJ4) ended his boycott and returned to the organized team activities this week in advance of this weekend minicamp.
He said there are no hard feelings and he will give it his all as long as he is on the field and on the team.

http://us.bc.yahoo.com/b?P=3ovV4kLEah5dIaSuTBGsVAXtSLUA5kwYJPAADFxC&T=1dlma281g%2fX%3d1276650736%2fE%3d2022878700%2fR% 3dsports%2fK%3d5%2fV%3d2.1%2fW%3dH%2fY%3dYAHOO%2fF %3d2697763919%2fH%3dY2FjaGVoaW50PSJzcG9ydHMiIGNvbn RlbnQ9ImxlYWd1ZT1uZmw7IHJlZnVybF93d3dfZmZ0b29sYm94 X2NvbSIgcmVmdXJsPSJyZWZ1cmxfd3d3X2ZmdG9vbGJveF9jb2 0iIHNlcnZlSWQ9IjNvdlY0a0xFYWg1ZElhU3VUQkdzVkFYdFNM VUE1a3dZSlBBQURGeEMiIHNpdGVJZD0iMjkyNDU1MSIgdFN0bX A9IjEyNzY2NTA3MzY4Njk2MjMiIHRvcGljcz0icmVmdXJsX3d3 d19mZnRvb2xib3hfY29tIiA-%2fQ%3d-1%2fS%3d1%2fJ%3dA36BC442&U=13es55p0k%2fN%3ddE45ENG_Uq8-%2fC%3d715481.13818239.13825366.1323516%2fD%3dSKY% 2fB%3d5761156%2fV%3d1

But he didn’t back off his wish to be traded or released because of his continued belief that he is not in the Cowboys’ plans next season because his $2 million salary and the drafting of Dez Bryant (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/23999/;_ylt=AszWjyctoH9pkFCZrZgsL37srZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/23999/news;_ylt=Aihjh.TezIqOHaygikWWHk7srZJ4).
“This is my thing right now. I’m not going to sit here and complain about things I can’t control,” Crayton said. “If I go out there and give it my all and bust my tail and do what I’m capable of doing, I’ll be here. If that’s not the case, when it comes down to it and the numbers get crunched and I’m not here, I don’t know what to tell you. But you’re going to get my all every day.”
Crayton was welcomed back with open arms by his coaches and teammates.
“It’s voluntary. I’m glad he volunteered to come back,” coach Wade Phillips said. “He worked hard and did some good things. That’s what we expect, and I know that’s what he expects of himself. He is going to give you everything he’s got when he’s out there for practice or a game.”
There are no hard feelings between him and receiver Roy Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players;_ylt=Agkm2J4VbUlhEFG.4.QbK9_srZJ4?type=las tname&first=1&query=Roy+Williams&q=Roy+Williams), who is at the center of Crayton’s complaints. The two had similar numbers last season, but Williams’ job is guaranteed for next season and Crayton’s isn’t because of Williams’ contract.
The two are good friends so Williams took the opportunity to throw some shots at Crayton and implications that Crayton would beat him out in an open competition.
“The old man?” Williams said of the 31-year-old Crayton. “He played back there with Tom Landry, so he knows the drill. It’s good to have him back, good to have him around us.
“Just to have him on the field is big for us. He came in and made some plays. He caught a crossing route, probably would have scored, maybe, if he had some speed. But he just keeps coming in making some plays. He’s a good teammate, one of my best friends on the team, so I’m glad to have him back.”
“I always compete with anybody on the team, especially Patrick,” Williams continued. “Because No. 1, I’m better than him. Two, I’m younger than him. Three, I beat him at everything we do—golf, PlayStation, all those things. So me and him compete in everything.”
Crayton laughed and shook his head when told of Williams’ comments.
He also said he wouldn’t have said it his face. He was smiling then too.

NOTES, QUOTES

Need a reason for the Cowboys’ decision to play hardball with receiver Patrick Crayton’s demands for a trade or a release, look no further than the current situation with rookie receiver Dez Bryant.
Although the first-round draft pick is immensely talented, full of potential and already inserted as one of the top three receivers ahead of Crayton, he has not played football since Sept. 19.
Bryant played three games last season at Oklahoma State before being ruled ineligible by the NCAA for lying to investigators about having dinner with Deion Sanders.
Since being drafted by the Cowboys, Bryant has been plagued by the aches and pains of getting re-acclimated to playing football again.
He was winded and out of shape on his first day of practice at rookie minicamp. He ended rookie minicamp with a twisted ankle. He missed one OTA practice with an upset stomach after having food poisoning. He was also plagued by a sore hip because of the workouts.
He was sidelined again with a tight hamstring that forced him to miss the last three days of OTA practices, but he did get back on the field last Friday.
• Running back Marion Barber (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7285/;_ylt=AoMnDhCSetBjO99MRV9SyOzsrZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7285/news;_ylt=Ajmq6nCaLM.1nDYZTUEaXqLsrZJ4) played last season with a torn left quadriceps muscle, running backs coach Skip Peete said. Barber suffered the injury in a Week 2 loss against the New York Giants at Cowboys Stadium.
According to Peete, “He still has a hole in it.”
Barber played the last 13 games with the injury, which generally takes six weeks to heal. Barber missed just one game. Barber was listed on the injury report with a strained quad from weeks three through seven. He was then taken off the injury report until he was put back on with a knee injury in December.
• RB Felix Jones (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8799/;_ylt=Au7gr2NeewYMBRXts4ziPy_srZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8799/news;_ylt=AlYFsaP48fA8nVtb7DHZqz7srZJ4) has heard the talk about him replacing Marion Barber as the starter. He said he doesn’t care either way, as he is used to sharing the load, going back to college with Darren McFadden (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8781/;_ylt=AkRU_brfDluUp_IZOJBe82TsrZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8781/news;_ylt=AmEooDjEaaey4prWekOa_vfsrZJ4) at Arkansas. “It’s not about who’s the star or who’s doing this or who’s doing that,” Jones said. “We just come out here working hard, contributing and trying to do the best for our team.”
• The Cowboys gained as many yards as anybody last season. The Saints led the league with 6,461 yards and Dallas was close behind with 6,390. But the area the Cowboys need to improve is scoring points.
The Saints ranked first with 510 points while Dallas was 14th with 361 points.
So one of the team’s focuses in the offseason is improving their red-zone offense.
“There are things that Tony (Romo) and our receivers have done down there that are consistent and we try to do more of those,” coach Wade Phillips said. “(Jason) Witten comes to mind more than anybody. We had been getting it to him a lot in the red zone. We didn’t do it quite as much last year. We shouldn’t have gotten away from that.”
Quote To Note: “My dream is to play in the Super Bowl not the US Open.”—Quarterback Tony Romo (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6624/;_ylt=AvKsO4.mrhpMUfRXAktyvyLsrZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6624/news;_ylt=ArV9UWNlUpd54LbIhW02cu3srZJ4) after he failed to qualify for the U.S. Open golf championship.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

• WR Miles Austin (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8021/;_ylt=Ak_nGUPq.rvKOAMOMOYhijvsrZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/8021/news;_ylt=AiGyTaEov763hfoSfBPeqbDsrZJ4) has signed his one-year, $3.168 million restricted free agent tender, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Todd Archer. If Austin hadn’t signed the offer by June 15, the Cowboys could have cut it to $1.65 million.
Medical Watch:
• LB Keith Brooking (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4277/;_ylt=AigvtnpIIHbCLcUAfqQsC6DsrZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4277/news;_ylt=AuwcCm0KdSMReaVrD3ilUcPsrZJ4) returned to practice Friday for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery about six weeks ago. “My knee felt better than it’s felt in a really long time, so that’s really positive,” Brooking told reporters at Friday’s minicamp. “The one thing I was concerned about was just explosiveness, having my legs underneath me, because I haven’t done the football, metabolic stuff in so long. But my legs felt great. I felt strong, I felt quick. I was very pleased with the day.”
• WR Dez Bryant returned to practice Friday after feeling soreness in his right hamstring Tuesday.
• NT Jay Ratliff (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7400/;_ylt=AkfA66V7P8uMEqI3YVL9bpDsrZJ4)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7400/news;_ylt=AtLxbW7rUJor5nQnzh5UV0fsrZJ4) will return for the final week of OTA practices and will participate in minicamp after spending the bulk of the offseason rehabbing from arthroscopic surgery on both elbows.

About time we got one of these :lol

Well i'm actually more excited about this year than any other. We've heard nothing but great things about Dez, however one thing seems to concern me.

It seems like we've gotten way too much hype this year. I've seen us in the top 5 of almost every power ranking and as high up as #2. I'm not sure that one rookie WR changes all that. I mean we got absolutely destroyed 34-3 by the Vikings and all of a sudden we've jumped them and New Orleans as the NFC favorites?

Not to mention we have a ? at the LT position now that Flozell is gone.

Despite all that I'm very optimistic about this year. There's no reason we shouldn't win the division. We can definitely make a superbowl run this year but also we have an infamous history of not living up to the hype.

I still rank us as 3rd in the NFC behind New Orleans and Minnesota (if Favre comes back) to start the season until we prove it on the field

Safety, LT and field goal kicker are the question marks going in to the year.
Although, I do find myself having faith in Free for some reason. I think he will do a good job.

I dont really care about a kicker cause our kicking always sucks, so anything better than terrible is an improvement

There was talk about signing Atogwe but Jerry made it clear recently that its not gonna happen

Hoping the kicking game changes. We're gonna need it this year, I think. If Buehler can kick straight, we may have one hell of a distance kicker. Atogwe would have been nice. I'm really not comfortable with Ball starting at safety. Sensabaugh is fine..but Ball? Come on...

Cowboys' dream as big as their stadium

Posted Sunday, Jun. 13, 2010

By CLARENCE E. HILL JR.
[email protected]

IRVING -- The Dallas Cowboys ended minicamp Sunday with a light practice and a family fun day at the team's Valley Ranch training camp headquarters.
They will break for about five weeks before reconvening for training camp in San Antonio to prepare for the 2010 season, one they not only hope but are dreaming will end with another family fun day at home.
Never mind that the Cowboys won their first playoff game in 13 years last season. Forget the conventional talk of focusing first on going one step further than they did a year ago.
With Super Bowl XLV scheduled for Cowboys Stadium (http://topics.star-telegram.com/Cowboys_Stadium.html#navlink=inline_to_topics) in Arlington in February, owner Jerry Jones (http://topics.star-telegram.com/Dallas_Cowboys.html#navlink=inline_to_topics) has made a point to remind anyone and everyone that the party is already planned.
It's just a matter of the Cowboys doing their part to make the dream a reality.
"I know where the Super Bowl is this year and the owner knows where it is," linebacker DeMarcus Ware (http://topics.star-telegram.com/DeMarcus_Ware.html#navlink=inline_to_topics) said. "He lets us know where it is every time he talks to us. Every single time. It's a big thing and it's going to motivate us all season. If you are hosting a Super Bowl at home, why not play in it? But it starts now with minicamp and training camp."
For the Cowboys, it's not just a Jerry Jones thing. It's an "everybody that's associated with the Cowboys" thing.
Former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach (http://topics.star-telegram.com/Football_Players.html#navlink=inline_to_topics) talked to the team about it during organized team activities (OTAs) a few weeks ago. Former defensive end Charles Haley had a similar message last week.
Linebacker Bradie James said no one wants to forget about the Super Bowl being in Arlington, but added no one could forget if they tried.
"I know where the Super Bowl is," James relented after chiming in with the politically correct goal of trying to go a step further than the Cowboys did last year.
"Of course the owner knows where it is. Charles Haley knows where it is. Roger Staubach knows where it is. Everybody knows where it is. You have to respect his process. But, yes, [it's] in the back of our minds. We know where the Super Bowl is and it would be really nice to play here. We will see what happens."
Said tight end Jason Witten (http://topics.star-telegram.com/Jason_Witten.html#navlink=inline_to_topics): "I can only imagine what playing in the Super Bowl in general would be like. But in this place, that would just be unbelievable. That is something that would be on the top of the list as far as your experiences as a player. That's what we're all working on and hopefully that will come true for us."
The Cowboys' owner doesn't need to wait to see what happens because when it comes to the Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium, he is like a little kid. He already has played out the scene vividly in his mind. And he wants his players to do the same.
"I don't have any problem with an imagination," Jones said Saturday during minicamp at Cowboys Stadium. "I listened to Charles Haley talk to our team the other day. And the first thing he said when he said come to the field whether it's for a game or practice, you've got to imagine what it is that you want to be. That's first. Then you go out and do the other fundamental things like work.
"As an example, when I was growing up I could play for hours and hours and hours -- just me -- in my yard and play several ball games," Jones said. "So I can really come in here and imagine and make believe and picture this thing and how it's going to be full with all the excitement of a Super Bowl, have it in here. You could dream that something could happen that never happened before. That's worth dreaming on. That's worth acting on, by the way, if you get the opportunity to act on it."

I would have loved Atogwe as sort of our playmaking safety ala Sharper last year, but the guys at C-F seem to think he's overrated and they're all pretty knowledgable, alot more than i am

As for the thead, the Cowboys have the talent to win it all. It just comes down to if it meshes. People also need to quit pointing at that minny loss and look at the strides they made. They played very well down the stretch and they won a playoff game. No reason why they can't take that next step.

I read on DC.com that Hamlin has a shot to take the starting job from Ball. He really performed well in OTA's and the minicamps from what I heard/read. If he continues to perform that way, then I think he really does have a chance to take over the starting position.

As long as he can make it from the 35 on in then I won't have a problem. It kills me to see a kicker miss a chip shot. Folk, Suisham, Gramatica, and whoever else they've had back there really struggled near the end of their time with the Cowboys from the 35 on in. If you can't make that, you don't deserve to be in the NFL.

In a story yet to hit the web, the Enquirer reports that the possessor of reality television’s finest wide receiver is now hooking up with Dallas Cowboys pass catcher Miles Austin.
Kardashian invited Austin to attend an NBA Finals game on June 6, only they didn’t sit together. (Fun!) Though they later did dinner at Casa Vega in Los Angeles.
Excerpt:
“Kim’s carving out more time in her schedule to be with Miles, and she’s telling those close to her that he’s ‘the one.’”
Now for the scary part: (No, no Khloe photos.)
“Her mom, Kris, is hoping Miles is the right guy as well. Kim turns 30 in October, and her mother is pushing for her to get married and start a family before too long.”
For all we know this is yet another planted plot for the Keeping Up With The Harpies reality charade.
But as Austin is a non-sequitur name and there are specific dates and locations in the report, I have a tendency to subscribe to the veracity of the story.

-- Cowboys RB Competition --
Wed Jun 16, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com

The Examiner reports the Dallas Cowboys running back battle is getting very competitive. RB Marion Barber III has dropped about 20 pounds and coaches are saying he looks faster on the field. His biggest competition is RB Felix Jones, who coaches said has beefed up. Adding muscle and more meat to Felix Jones' body will add power that he has lacked. This may help him not only break tackles but make him more versatile if for some reason Barber is not playing and the Cowboys need a 2-yard gain for a first down or touchdown. Barber had a tough time occasionally on important short-yardage runs for first downs and touchdowns. But as we learned recently, Barber was playing with a serious quad injury most of the year. Barber could wind up getting 60 percent of the carries this season.

-- Cowboys WR Watch --
Wed Jun 16, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
Dallas Morning News’ Todd Archer believes the Cowboys will keep six wide receivers, including WR Patrick Crayton, this season. The Cowboys are using WR Miles Austin in the slot to make sure they get him away from situations where teams can just bracket him and follow him all over the place. “And if they do, then they’ll be screwed by all the other guys they have on the field. So, I think for WR Dez Bryant, you just want to have him come in and just learn one thing: maybe both outside spots as opposed to the inside where you have to read so much stuff and be on the same page. That’s why I still think WR Patrick Crayton is still going to be around here. Maybe I’m in the minority on that one but I still think they’re keeping six wideouts. But, I think Miles’ experience, his knowing the system and his explosiveness in the slot helps him, and I think for Dez, it is better just to put him on one side so he can learn it first as opposed to having to learn all these other spots. As we found out this week, there is a lot of stuff these guys need to know.” Crayton won’t be given a fair opportunity to battle for the No. 3 wide receiver spot. “Is it going to be a fair fight? No and Patrick knows it. He’s going to have to knock out the champ, so to speak, to get on the field. And even at that, he can’t just out-point the guy, he’s going to have to knock him out. So, I don’t know if he’s going to have a fair chance to do it but I know there’s going to be situations this year where he’s going to win a game or two for the Cowboys because of his relationship with QB Tony Romo, because of the connection they have and because he always seems to make a couple of plays that win games. Think of the Washington game where Romo is running around and he knows where to go and Tony finds him. They don’t have another receiver…Miles is a little bit like that but even not as much as Patrick is, in terms of finding that open spot and knowing what the quarterback is thinking at the same time. So, that’s kind of why I think Patrick is here, but I think…is he going to be the No. 3? I don’t think he would be. But you know what? This could be a redshirt year. And then, if WR Roy Williams doesn’t play well this year, then they’ll have Patrick again next year to get into that third role.

I want to be really excited, but then I remember that the only thing the Cowboys have accomplished with this yardage gaining machine and Wade Phillips vaunted attacking 3-4 defense is one playoff win since this Romo era began in 2006.

-- New Jersey Governor a Cowboys Fan --
Thu Jun 17, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
The Philadelphia Daily News reports New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is not about to win many popularity contests these days, and this certainly can’t help, especially in South Jersey: Christie admits he is a Cowboys fan. “Listen, I grew up in the early 1970s and became a huge QB Roger Staubach fan and a Cowboys fan,” Christie told the Star-Ledger, of Newark, in an interview about sports in the state. “Believe me, it doesn’t get me anything political around here because the Giants fans hate me, the Eagles fans hate me, it doesn’t matter. But you grow up rooting for a team. That’s just the way it works.” Christie said his son is a huge Jets fan, so he has become “a secondary Jets fan.”

-- Tony Romo Entering Prime of Career --
Sat Jun 26, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
The Dallas Morning News reports Cowboys QB Tony Romo had his best season in 2009 with 26 touchdown passes and a career-low nine interceptions while throwing for a franchise record 4,483 yards. Romo struck the balance between protecting the ball and maintaining his creativity in and out of the pocket. He turned 30 in April and is signed through 2013, so he should be entering the prime of his career. HC Wade Phillips said Romo no longer has the “looseness” that was in his game the first two seasons as a starter and has looked sharp this off-season as he continues to refine his technique and maintaining disciplined decision making. There really is not a question about Romo anymore. It is more about him continuing his smart, decisive play when camp begins and continuing to be sharp each day. How he practices is how the team practices. If he is sloppy, the team is sloppy.

Masters of the NFL: For first time, Cowboys enter season as winningest team

12:35 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 20, 2010

BY GERRY FRALEY / The Dallas Morning News
[email protected] ([email protected]) If having the Super Bowl (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Super_Bowl) in their home ballyard this season does not turn up the pressure on the Cowboys, this franchise achievement should.
After 50 years of trying, the Cowboys will enter the season for the first time with the highest all-time winning percentage in pro football history. By winning their final three regular-season games last year, the Cowboys pushed into the playoffs and also boosted their winning percentage to .580 and passed Miami, at .579.
That sets the bar at a high level for the Cowboys. To live up to past standards, all this season's club has to do is stay home for what would be its ninth Super Bowl appearance after finishing the regular season with the league's top record.
It's the story-line for this season.
"I can't think of a greater source of motivation for this year's team than to remind them of the legacy of this franchise," owner and general manager Jerry Jones (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Jerry_Jones) said. "The great players who have come before them and the high standard of performance that our fans are accustomed to, too."
The Cowboys are only the fifth franchise since 1963 to have the distinction of highest winning percentage. The others are Cleveland, which reigned from 1963 through '76, the Los Angeles-Oakland Raiders (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Oakland_Raiders) from 1977-'96, Miami from 1997-98 and 2000-09 and Jacksonville in 1999.
Jacksonville debuted as an expansion team in 1995 and reached the playoffs in each of the next four seasons. The records for Miami and Oakland include their pre-merger seasons in the AFL. The same holds for Cleveland, which dominated the All America Football Conference before joining the NFL (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/NFL) in 1950.
"It's particularly meaningful for the organization to have that mark as we enter into a year where we will celebrate 50 seasons of Dallas Cowboys football," Jones said. "It is a reflection of a great commitment and a high level of excellence from a large group of people over the course of five decades. We all know that winning is the name of the game."
When Jones took control of the franchise after Bum Bright's disastrous run, the Cowboys ranked fourth in all-time winning percentage at .607. They rank 10th in the league for winning percentage (.548) during the Jones era, but author Michael MacCambridge credits him and former general manager Tex Schramm (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Tex_Schramm) for putting the franchise into this lofty position.
"Almost every other team has had extended periods of poor performance – down periods if you will," said MacCambridge, whose America's Game has received glowing reviews for its chronicling of the NFL's rise to prominence. "The Cowboys have never been down for very long.
"You can chalk it up to many things, but you have to start with this: The club has had two primary decision-makers, Tex Schramm and then Jerry Jones, in 50 years."
MacCambridge credited Schramm with developing an influential blueprint of how to run a pro football organization and making shrewd hires such as coach Tom Landry (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Tom_Landry) and personnel director Gil Brandt. The Cowboys' three Super Bowl wins under Jones outweigh the three consecutive 5-11 seasons at the start of this century, MacCambridge said.
"Jerry Jones was hammered when the Cowboys went 5-11, but he has to get credit for doing what was necessary to keep the Cowboys among the elite," he said. "It's more than just money. Part of being a successful GM in the 21st century is being able to relate to modern athletes. Jones is superb at that and at framing what it means to be a Cowboy."
To be a Cowboy this season requires two things: have the NFL's best regular-season record and get to the Super Bowl. That's all.

Texans WR Tells San Antonio Cowboys Fans: We are Going to Make ‘Em Eat Their Words (http://www.nflgridirongab.com/2010/07/16/texans-wr-tells-san-antonio-cowboys-fans-we-are-going-to-make-%e2%80%98em-eat-their-words/)

Posted by Jesse Rios under Dallas Cowboys (http://www.nflgridirongab.com/category/nfl/dallas-cowboys/), Houston Texans (http://www.nflgridirongab.com/category/nfl/houston-texans/)

http://www.texansgab.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Jacoby-Jones-07.16.10-300x202.jpg (http://www.texansgab.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Jacoby-Jones-07.16.10.jpg)

Houston Texans wide receiver Jacoby Jones confidently called out all San Antonio’s Cowboys fans who think their team is the only pro football team in the Lone Star State:
“We are going to make ‘em eat their words.”
The warning came after visits with San Antonio’s 1250 ESPN The Zone and the San Antonio Express-News. Jones said that his mission was to win, and the Texans, too, are “playing for the Lombardi Trophy like everyone else.” Going into his fourth season as a pro, Jones’ maturation seems to be on the right track to make an impact for the Texans in 2010. And for the preseason and regular season games against the Cowboys:
“Both times we play them, it’s going to be a dogfight.”
Jacoby Jones caught six touchdowns last year, showing imporvement in route running and his ability to hold the ball. Andre Johnson and David Anderson’s leadership has really helped Jones mature, enough for him to push eighth-year pro Kevin Walter for the wide receiver job opposite Johnson.

1st season without Owens as a team that was expected by many to miss the playoffs. Then they won the division by playing well down the stretch and won a playoff game in impressive fashion. They already conquered 2 demons to take that next step. I am not going to sit here and call the Cowboys the best team in football but I don't see how they don't get better. The article states the all time winning percentage at 58%, and the Cowboys are a tad over 51% in the last 10 years you pointed out. Given three of those were 5-11 seasons, the Cowboys have been right on track or way over with the exception of 3 seasons.

Also, with 58% winning being the best in the league, by your definition every team is mediocre or less than mediocre. Doesn't make sense.

What needs to happen is Mike Hamlin breaking out in camp then taking the reins for the regular season. Alan Ball is too small to realistically play the position over 16 games + playoffs (hopefully) and the coaches and players have been raving about Hamlin. The Cowboys started with the worst average starting field position in the NFL last season, and a lot of that is because Ken Hamlin never made any ays on the ball from a position where the defense needs turnovers. If Hamlin can become that guy then Ball slides to his natural position on the team as the 4th corner (and one of the better if not the best 4th corner in the league) and the defense will be more solid.

I'm not counting out Akwasi Owusu-Ansah or Pat Watkins when it comes to starting FS either. It's probably the most wide open position going into camp. It's nice that they have a lot of young options though. Hamlin and Ball are the favorites, but there is a lot we don't know about AOA and I have always liked Watkins who has been around for awhile so he knows the defense.

These records are based on teams who have played at least 10 years. Houston has played for 8...if they play on the same level for the next 2 years and don't step it up, they will be on this list as the team with the worst percentage in the league. I hear ya. My concerns with Aki is that he's not only a rookie, but he's a rookie from a small DII school who is coming off a shoulder injury and will be switching positions in the NFL. IMO not realistic for him to be the starting free safety this year on a team with legit preseason SB chances.

I'd love for Watkins to step up into that starting role, but he's just not shown over the last several years that he can consistently make plays at the position. His problem is getting out of position way too often to be the starting safety full time, and I'd be shocked if he somehow steps up that much this year.

That is going to be an interesting position to watch not only in camp but for the first few games of the season to see if someone can lay claim to it similar to what Jenkins dis last year with the 2nd corner slot.

I'm going to Training Camp next week at the Alamodome and will be watching the Safeties closely. As a boys fan that is the position I am most worried about. Last year I watched the receivers closely and felt better about the boys after watching Austin Miles and Kevin Olgetree. Hopefully some of these young safeties get the job done because I'm thinking SUPER this year.

You were right dude Austin Miles is a beast.

I'm kind of excited about the possibilities with Aki though..wasn't he the DII leader in INTs? We could really use someone who has the eye to pick off a few.

I don't think a lack of potential with getting interceptions will keep him off the field this year, it'll be because he's far too green to be in the right spots consistently and not bust coverage. If he wants to make an impact this year he needs to prove to be a bad ass kick returner and make special teams tackles.

Oh yeah..I agree completely with the fact that he'll be too green. Just like the potential for the future.

I hear ya. My concerns with Aki is that he's not only a rookie, but he's a rookie from a small DII school who is coming off a shoulder injury and will be switching positions in the NFL. IMO not realistic for him to be the starting free safety this year on a team with legit preseason SB chances.

Him being from a DII school doesn't really bother me because I know that there are plenty of great players from DII schools. I go to Abilene Christian University which has produced Danieal Manning, Johnny Knox, and Benard Scott in recent years. His injury is a concern, but it is relatively unknown how good he actually is and how well he can cover. That said I doubt he will start, but I'm excited about watching him at camp to see what he can do. In the limited amount of film I have seen him in he looks like he is very quick and can move his hips well. He looks like he has good size and can play multiple positions in the secondary.

Miles Austin has seized the WR crown

"One of the methods that former college football coach Bear Bryant used to settle positional battles early in his coaching career was the "challenge system." This allowed any player to call for a one-on-one battle with a starter. The two would go head-to-head in a variety of areas (blocking, tackling, receiving, etc.) to see who was the best at executing the key responsibilities of the position. The winner would claim the prize as starter.

If such a system existed in the world of statistical analyses, there would be many potential challengers to Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson for the title of best wide receiver in the NFL. Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss and Reggie Wayne all would serve as worthy foes for Johnson, but surprisingly enough, none of them would rank as the No. 1 contender.

The real competition for Johnson as the NFL's premier wideout comes from within the state in which he plays pro football. Many might not consider Miles Austin to be an elite wideout yet, but he actually had a better set of metrics than any of the three other aforementioned contenders this past season.

So did he do enough last season to beat the perceived champion for the belt?

To find out, let's do it like Bryant's players and run a 10-stage challenge. We'll compare both Austin's and Johnson's yards per attempt (YPA) metrics in 10 main receiving categories. At the end, whoever has the most victories will win the honor of best wide receiver in the NFL.

A full chart follows the breakdown by category.

Short passes (thrown downfield 10 yards or fewer)
Austin's 9.4 YPA topped Johnson's 6.0 mark by a 50 percent margin. That is enough to give him a win, but it is also worth noting that Austin didn't just beat Johnson in this metric but also led the entire league in this category.
Challenge status: Austin 1, Johnson 0

Medium passes (11-19 yards downfield)
OK, so Austin wins on dinks and dunks, but can he beat Johnson on the deep out, deep in and comeback routes that make up the bulk of the medium-depth patterns? Not exactly, but he didn't lose to him, either. Austin and Johnson both gained 12.1 YPA on medium routes last season.
Challenge status: Austin 1, Johnson 0, 1 tie

Deep passes (20-29 yards downfield)
For most receivers, the deeper the pass, the more likely it is they would lose to Johnson, but Austin won this category as well. His 20.3 mark ranked ninth in the league and nearly doubled Johnson's 10.9 YPA.
Challenge status: Austin 2, Johnson 0, 1 tie

Bomb-length passes (30 or more yards downfield)
Go patterns are the kings of this route depth, and this is where Johnson starts to make his stand. His 26.1 YPA was seventh-best in the league overall and second-best among wideouts with 10 or more bomb attempts. It also nearly doubled Austin's 13.8 YPA mark.
Challenge status: Austin 2, Johnson 1, 1 tie

Vertical (all medium, deep and bomb passes)
Johnson's lead in the bomb-pass category helped vault him over Austin in this all-encompassing category, but not by much. Johnson posted a 14.5 YPA mark, ranking 10th in the league, while Austin checked in with a 13.7 YPA total (which ranked 15th).
Challenge status: Austin 2, Johnson 2, 1 tie

Overall YPA (all route depths)
Johnson's bomb-pass prowess helped him close enough ground to win the vertical category, but it wasn't enough to overcome Austin here. Austin's 11.2 overall YPA mark ranked fourth-best and was more than 2 yards ahead of Johnson's 9.9 YPA total.
Challenge status: Austin 3, Johnson 2, 1 tie

In the portion of this challenge based on depth of the pass route, Austin is the winner -- but distance alone is not the only indicator of how good a receiver is. Another way to measure receiving excellence is to see how well each wideout did when facing varying levels of competition.

I went through the breakdown charts I did for every game from the 2009 season and pulled out the plays on which a receiver faced a cornerback. I then assigned color-coded grades to the cornerbacks based on their 2009 YPA totals (which can be found in the KC Joyner Metricmania section in the 2010 ESPN The Magazine fantasy football preview).

Against cornerbacks who yield YPAs of 7 yards or fewer on average (red-rated CBs)
Austin was hardly fazed by elite competition, as he posted 12.0 YPA against them. Johnson's 8.0 YPA in this category ranked 18th in the league but didn't keep up with Austin's total.
Challenge status: Austin 4, Johnson 2, 1 tie

Against CBs who yield 7-9 YPA on average (yellow-rated CBs)
Austin put up 9.8 YPA here versus Johnson's 6.9. Another win for Austin.
Challenge status: Austin 5, Johnson 2, 1 tie

Against CBs who yield 9 or more YPA on average (green-rated CBs)
Johnson was very good at dominating overmatched cornerbacks, something shown by his 14.6 YPA total here. He wasn't as good as Austin and his 17.7 YPA mark, however.
Challenge status: Austin 6, Johnson 2, 1 tie

Against CBs in general
With wins in all three color-coded cornerback categories, it is obvious Austin won this part of the challenge as well (13.4 YPA versus Johnson's 9.9 mark), but just as was the case on short passes, it is worth noting that Austin ranked No. 1 in the league in this metric.

It also means he won the competition by a score of 7-2-1."

So much for a long holdout, or a holdout at all.

The Cowboys have agreed to terms on a contract for rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant, meaning the 24th overall pick will be in camp for the first practice Saturday in San Antonio.

Details of the contract have not been formally announced, however Cowboys vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones is scheduled to meet with the media Friday evening at 6:45 p.m.

The Cowboys still have to agree on a deal with second-round pick Sean Lee, however, it is expected he will be signed by Friday as well.

1. Miles Austin
2. Roy Williams (for now but not for long)
3. Patrick Crayton (i hope they cut him never liked him)
4. Dez Bryant (will be #2 by the time the boys are in the SB)
5. Kevin Olgetree

Unless the the cowboys take 6 receivers I don't see Holley making the team and even then he has to beat out Sam Hurd to be that #6 receiver. I could see the cowboys cutting Crayton if he continues to be a distraction so maybe then he can make the team.

The Cowboys are most likely keeping 6 receivers with Hurd being #6.

Holley has to play good enough in camp for another team to take notice and sign him, because the Cowboys cannot use him.

Olgetree might be the best route runner and have the best hands on the team. Olgetree was also a lot more involved in the offense than Hurd was last season. Receivers coach Ray Sherman always talks highly of Olgetree. The only thing Hurd has proven is that he is a good special teams player. He hasn't done much as a receiver. Olgetree might be the cowboys kick returner this year. Hurd will have to battle for a spot. Olgetree is a lock to be on the roster barring a bad injury.

Just a few observations I made from training camp today...first, the obvious one: yes, Dez is pretty good and he and Romo looked pretty well in sync. And it will only get better. There were plenty of throws to Dez that weren't 100% spot on. Yet he made most of the catches anyway. From what I saw of Choice, he looked really light on his feet. He was making some good cuts. He looked really good at last year's camp too. During the 11-on-11 drills, the defense was making some good plays. Butler made an interception of Romo. He's probably my favorite rookie from last year and I'm anxious to see him get added PT to what he got last season. There were also some other good defensive plays made...yeah most were against the other QBs but still. Early on, Buehler was getting some kicking action. But to be honest I really didn't see how he did because I was too busy trying to get my connection to work because the wifi at the stadium was a little weak.

And just FYI, if anyone is interested in live updates, you can go to cowboys-forum. Myself and others were providing minute by minute coverage of the practice and we will do so tomorrow as well.

The only thing that needs to match is the side of the stadium the party pass ticket is for. There is an east entrance and a west entrance. My tickets are for the west entrance. So if your friend buys one online, all he has to do is buy another west entrance ticket. Once you both get in, you are free to go to whatever level you want. But definitely get there early if you want any hope of seeing the field. :lol

lol..we'd probably go out there Saturday, do a tour, and then hit the stadium early Sunday morning. What time do you recommend getting there?

That is a tricky question. I think parking lots open four hours before kickoff. However, the lot I usually park at (blue lot across street) sometimes opens early. Or at least it did last season. For the Giants home opener, the game started at 7:30. But we started tailgating at 9am in the blue lot. No joke. At that point, the lot hadn't even been completed yet, so the attendant just let us come on in. We had the entire lot to ourselves to throw around a football for a few hours. :lol

So my suggestion is to get there early enough so that you can park the second the lots open. I'm not sure how early the doors open for the stadium, but I think it is 3 hours before the game. You might gave to go in then for party pass. But maybe it won't be as bad for the Titans.

The fuck did you expect? You go into a thread bashing a team that wins when your team has the lowest win percentage in NFL history.

The Texans have been around for 8 seasons:

49 wins 79 losses:

they've won 38% of their games

Cowboys first 8 seasons:

44-61-5

they won 33% of their games in their first 8 seasons.

What you said was true, but it's just more proof that you are a nutfuck.

I've been wanting call him out on how stupid his win percentage argument is, but I was having too much fun baiting him so I could watch him fail(which isn't hard to do since it basically comes natural to him). I guess I'll go ahead close the door on it so he'll quit saying it.

The Texans have an 8 season sample. They have the worst winning percentage right now, but there is no criteria that suggest it is the lowest win percentage in NFL history. It can't be first 8 seasons of a franchise...because New Orleans is easily worse at 28% through their first 8 seasons(30-77). It can't even be the past 8 seasons, as the Raiders is easily worse too at 31%(40-88).

So essentially his "lowest in NFL history" argument is just another one he made up...just like he did with the Niners making the playoff in their second season in the league.

Your point is moot...the Cowboys have been around a lot longer and won a lot more..lol comparing early seasons and acting like that helps your argument. So I guess Ryan Leaf is as good as Troy Aikman because their rookie seasons were similar...makes a lot of sense.

Play of the Day: Dez does it again (http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4669747/play-of-the-day-dez-does-it-again)

SAN ANTONIO – It’s getting monotonous to give Dez Bryant (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13215) props in this space, but the dude keeps making spectacular plays.

And it’s often against Pro Bowl competition.

Bryant got a step on Mike Jenkins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11259) while running a stutter-go during 1-on-1 drills, which is an impressive feat in itself. Then Bryant came back to snare an underthrown pass from Matt Nichols (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13622), making a leaping catch and falling into the end zone for a 45-yard touchdown.

It was the second time Bryant got a step on Jenkins deep during the session. Jenkins managed to recover to deflect a slightly underthrown pass the previous time.

Bryant is likely to see a lot of man coverage this season, with opponents having to scheme to stop Miles Austin (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10147) and Jason Witten (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4527). He’s proven that he can create major problems in those situations.

“They can’t cover Miles one-on-one,” Bryant said Sunday. “I’m pretty sure they’re going to double him, and that’s going to leave the rest of us open to make a play.

“When I see it, I’m going to get excited.”

He won’t be the only one.

The list there may be small or sometimes big. But they are well hidden, so sometimes you will find some good deals there. Hes out for the year so no...

TE depth should look like this: Witten, Martellus, Sicko.

Philips looked great in camp and in the first part of that preseason game so it sucks to see him go out. Martellus needs to pull his head out of his ass and perform.

Yeah..Blake is a hater, dude...Bennett needs to work, and Sicko is ok...might have to consider signing a fullback now. I like Gronkowski...and Cricket is always there. Phillips was going to take away the need for a fullback, but we may have to sign one now. Also looks like we may have to go back to a 2 kicker team also...Buehler just doesn't look like he's going to cut it.

Just a warning, it definitely is different standing up an entire game and just standing up frequently. The one game I have done the party pass thing was the home opener against the Giants last season. I went into it with a similar mindset, that I "probably wouldn't be sitting much anyway." Once I experienced the party pass, I realized just how much I actually stay seated when I have a seat. Obviously, it was more packed that game than it will be for most, so I didn't get a rail spot and had to watch the entire game on a screen by the retractable windows. And let me tell you this: my legs and back hurt like a mofo during the 2nd half. I was constantly bending over and touching my toes. During timeouts I would sit on the floor for at least a little relief.

OXNARD, Calif. -- Now that he's gotten rid of his walking boot, Dez Bryant has adjusted his goal.

The Dallas Cowboys' first-round pick is determined to play in the final two preseason games. The rookie receiver said Saturday that he plans to push to return against the Houston Texans on Aug. 28, which would be four weeks and one day after he suffered a high right ankle sprain during a training camp practice at the Alamodome.

"The way I feel, my goal is Houston," Bryant said with a big smile after Saturday afternoon's practice. "Hopefully, if I feel really good, I'm going to get in their ear and beg them."

The original timetable was four to six weeks for Bryant's return. His optimism was shared by owner/general manager Jerry Jones after the team's medical staff gave Bryant permission to stop wearing the walking boot that had kept his ankle stable the last two weeks.

"He's doing well and we expected him to do well, by the way," Jones said. "We had expectations, and I am hopeful we will have him back for those last two preseason games."

For the first time since suffering the injury, Bryant did some cardio work and participated in light rehabilitation drills with other injured players. He had no problem balancing on his right leg.

"I felt pain-free," he said. "I hope they have something harder for me because what I'm doing now is kind of light. ... The only thing that's hard about it is just watching the other guys run routes, knowing I can't be out there to help."

Bryant also played catch with Miles Austin before practice. He jumped to catch one pass and landed without wincing.

"No pain at all. I'm fine," Bryant said. "At the same time, I still know I can't cut the way I want to. That's why they want to get me back 100 percent.

"It doesn't hurt when I cut, but I know my body. I know when I can cut, and I can't cut the way I want to."

Bryant had a sensational first week of training camp before suffering the injury when cornerback Orlando Scandrick accidentally fell on Bryant's leg while breaking up a pass.

It appeared that Bryant, whom the Cowboys selected with the 24th overall pick after trading up three spots, could challenge Roy E. Williams for a starting job. After missing most of the preseason, Bryant will probably begin the season as the team's No. 3 receiver.

The dilemma is that if he returns too soon, there's more of a chance for a setback, perhaps turning this into a problem that bothers him all season.

Wait too long, though, and he'll miss even more practice time. He needs it as much as any rookie since he played only three games last season at Oklahoma State.

"I just want to get the feel for the game," Bryant said.

Receivers coach Ray Sherman has been encouraged by the way Bryant has studied while he's been sidelined. Sherman said Bryant has been attentive during meetings and practices and doesn't anticipate him blowing many assignments despite his abbreviated training camp.

Whether or not he starts, the Cowboys expect Bryant to make a major impact as a rookie.

"He tells me every day that he's feeling good," Sherman said. "He's feeling really good. Hopefully, he can be out here soon. I don't know how soon that's going to be. This is what he loves to do. I just can't wait until we get him back out here."

The injury hasn't dimmed Bryant's expectations for this season.

"I still feel like I can help out," he said. "I will be able to help out and do the things I have been doing."

Shanihan would have been building up that Dallas Oline and if Wade wouldn't have stayed as Defensive Coordinator, then he would have found a very good replacement. The Skins now have Haslett who helped the New Orleans D last year.

And Shanihan would have Dallas in a run first offense. That would protect Romo from himself as he wouldn't be forced to carry the team on his shoulders.

Whitten and Austin, and whoever else would be that much more open when teams were trying to stop Marion and Felix Jones.

So yes, I thank God everyday that Shanihan is not walking the the sidelines in Cowboys land.

Yes sir, good catch, my memory is not what it used to be, too many brain cells killed off. Yeah, Greg Williams is the coach that was supposed to take over for Gibbs when he left town, but he had an ego clash with Snyderatto at the time.

So no credit to Haslett for the Saints success last year.

But all that said, I have plenty of confidence in Haslett getting the job done on D in DC this year. He's got the resume.

bigzak25

Greg Blache...yeah...I'm not sure of the behind the scenes stuff, but his D had the corners playing way too soft way too often. I'm talking 10 yards back on 3rd and short. It was because our D couldn't get any pressure and he didn't want to get beat deep, but the other team would just take what was given to them, keep moving the chains, and just demoralize the whole D...so I'm sure he is a good man, but his D needed lots of work.

Hey man, I have been paying attention. My statement that Mike Taylor is an as the wind blows tool is very valid.

IF something goes wrong this year? :lol

Don't you mean when? Or do you honestly expect the Cowboys to win the Superbowl with Wade as a puppet head coach and Jerry Jones calling the personnel moves?

Who is the leader on your offense again? It should definitely be either your QB or RB. Unless Romo is a changed man on a mission this season, then your team is SOL.

Mike Taylor was going off about the Oline being disinterested as an excuse for that pathetic showing vs the Raiders. Well they better damn well get interested. This is their careers and Romo was behind center. What are they waiting for? Who is chewing their asses out this week? Nobody, that's who.

Maybe Jerry will make a locker room appearance in a Romo jersey and call an Oline meeting to tell them that if they get his money maker injured, it's their asses. :lol

But right now Mike Taylor wants to put all the blame on your offensive co-coordinator. Don't you think Jason Garrett would call a run inside the 5 if he thought it would work? Or do you believe he just wants to get fired? :lol

Jason Garrett has not been given the tools to succeed. You think he has. But the Oline is all that matters. It is the foundation after the QB...sometimes even before the QB. Jerry is not concerned with the Oline and Dallas will suffer the consequences.

Then later on in the season, Mike Taylor will jump on the hate Jerry bandwagon. If you heard him two days ago, he was ADAMANT that none of what we saw on the field is Jerry's fault. He is wrong...but he'll come around...when the obvious is obvious.

I think he doesn't call runs inside the 5 because he is too worried about being predictable. Garrett tries too hard at times to be creative. There is a time to be creative and sometimes you just have to blow off the line and knock someone on their asses....the Cowboys have proven that they can run...they do it up and down the field then Garrett gets brain lock inside the 10.

But this is just speculation and opinion...just like everyone else...no one here actually knows what goes on in a locker room....we just like to think we do. :lol

Good stuff Mike, but I don't think Garrett goes on brainlock.

It's just much tougher to run inside the 10. You can't back the safeties off deep. The corners are that much closer to offer run support, and the defense is usually in a heavy d-line package to stuff runs up the middle.

You gotta have the line to get the push up the middle in spite of all that.

Dallas Oline are no slouches, don't get me wrong, but I think that they are getting worse, not better is all I'm saying.

Agreed.

I think sometimes Garrett sees the talent we have on offense and gets an orgasm on how many different ways we can get it to the endzone.

I remember in a tight game last year we had the ball 1st and goal on the 1 and we did two straight fades to Bennett and ended up kicking a field goal. I though I was dreaming:bang

BUMP, with all due respect, you answered your own question.

The reason we all know the line is getting worse is because the Cowboys got it all the way to the goal line and passed it three straight times.

That shows a big big lack of confidence in the running game.

Basically, Garrett is doing the math in his head and feels that those passes have a greater chance of success than a run would. That's a big red flag man.

There are lots of teams that can move the ball between the 20s.

The Cowboys are one of the best.

It's also only preseason. If they start pulling that shit in the regular season, then it becomes a big issue. The Cowboys were 7th in the league in rushing last year, so they have the capability.

Garrett's inability to stick to the run game is perplexing and frustrating at times. Getting rid of Flozell was an immediate upgrade. Flo is done IMO, the league's leader in penalties got owned last night. Free looks a lot better already.

Back to what you said, I think it's too early too judge in preseason if the line has gotten better or worse overall. If this keeps up in the regular season than it becomes an issue.
