Seriously.... the keeper almost had that penalty kick.

And I saw the penalty coming since Barrera crossed the first guy, and I also knew Blanco was going to take it.. I was just hoping he wouldn't fuck it up, and he almost did.

I'm just glad we beat France after most of you guys had us losing to them... that's sweeter.

Nah, he didn't almost fuck it up. The keeper guessed right but it didn't matter because Blanco placed it so perfectly. Skill.

sonic, how are the French people taking it over there?

everyone is disappointed of course but we're not surprised. Since 2006, the love for the french team has decreased: too much egos on the team, arrogant and incompetent coach.

Some of our best players are not on the team, those who are playing are not playing in their true position.

The deception was huge in 2002, this year not so much coz the expectations were not that high. We're just glad Domenech is gone.

this is the worst generation for the french team since the 70s.

If both my parents were born in Mexico, and I was raised that way, with common beliefs... Spanish as a first language in most occasions, then more than likely I will start to love a team that my dad looks up to with a passion.

You should get this through your head... It's about how someone is raised, not just because Mexico has had the better history. People start to love this team since they are kids because they look up to their parents and what they love.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the USA fanbase, I'm not a hater... I wish they go far so they can represent CONCACAF just like I wish Mexico would.

But I have to say that the size isn't the same.... Mexico has a passion for this team, USA fanbase is always a little more conservative. I can honestly say there's people out there who would kill... literally for South Africa tickets to watch a game, I don't know if that's a compliment to the Mexican fanbase or not, but I doubt any USA fans would do the same.

It's just not the same... and It's not better or worse, there's just a huge difference in the type of passion the fans have.

If an American takes a piss somewhere sacred he should be locked up and the key should be thrown away. Obviously the players of the game should be the goal scorers, but to me, it was Salcido a Rafa. I thought putting Rafa in as a defensive mid was a HUGE mistake vs SA (mainly because I didn't trust Maza by himself), but since the defense did well, Rafa was able to show some offensive spark along with his usual defensive intensity.

As for Salcido, you couldn't ask anymore from him. He's been so solid in Holland these past few years, and it's shown. He can defend like an animal, he has a good shot, he passes very well, etc... If only we had a defense like this during the 98 world cup....

Also, I'll eat my crow for talking shit about Conejo. I'm to blame for not trusting him, for not giving him a chance; on the other hand, Mexican futbol has taught me to not fucking trust any mexican goalkeeper, whether it be for my club team (rayados) or for Mexico. Today, Conejo proved me (as well as a ton of other people) wrong.

LMAO Do you even watch soccer besides the world cup? Do you know how worthless Mexican goalkeepers are? What Conejo did today is comparable to a Mexican style "Peter Schmeichel" performance. He had more than enough good saves (i've rewatched the match already).

The sentiment in Mexico is that Aguirre is an idiot and no goalie has been good since Jorge Campos (who wasn't fantastic by any means).

As for us poor french fans, this game marks the end of one of our worst era ever: FUCK YOU Domenech and FUCK YOU OVERPAID PRIMA DONAS... Time to GTFO

???

Conejo was good in his prime in 02'. Oswaldo was good in 06' and is still a good goalie. Ochoa and Michel are both solid goalies. Conejo sucks and shouldnt be starting but that doesnt mean Mexico doesnt have any quality goalies.

Hey, I did my part. :)

I didn't say Sense or anyone couldn't root for their choice of teams...I just think its a question of loyalty. If someone lives here but was born in, say, Brazil and they root for the Brazilian team I get that but why root against your homeland if the situation arises? I was just asking questions and Sense got bent. If he was born in Mexico, cool, he implied he was from Texas though. :toast

I dont see the big deal if your parents are Mexican-born. Sure youre born here but you grew up with Mexican culture around your house and watching & rooting for Mexican soccer. The USA and Mexico are huge rivals in soccer, so why wouldnt someone in that situation 'hate' the USA NT?

I'm sorry but this is just being a homer...

Oswaldo was always a horrible for us.... he's still a good goalie? hahahhaa

He's been washed up for years. Conejo and Oswaldo were good at some point of their careers, but for the most part, they're just mediocre goalkeepers.

The closest goalkeepers we have to being good are Ochoa and Michel and maybe Corona... with Ochoa having the most potential and still improving.

We don't have the worst goalkeepers in the tournament, but they definitely aren't good.

I'm still looking forward to seeing Ochoa improve as a player, but seeing him on the bench isn't helping.

Im not trying to say that theyre Buffon or Casillas but they also arent "worthless".

Conejo is past his prime I agree plus the fact that he's like 5 feet tall has always made me real uncomfortable. But Oswaldo was always horrible for Mexico, really? Name a time where he was horrible. Was it during that great Confederations Cup? Copa America? The 06' World Cup? Qualifiers? Cause I dont think many people would agree if you said he had bad performances during those competitions. He's a natural leader and has alot of experience under his belt. If Aguirre wanted an experienced keeper he shouldve gone with Oswaldo not Conejo.

Im a Pumas fan.

I just dont get how Mexico's goalies have ever been "worthless" or "horrible". Like I said Im not saying theyre Buffon or anything, simply that theyre solid. Goalkeepers is not something Mexico has been lacking. That would be forwards and creative mids.

The game against Argentina where he conceded 3 keeper goals....

Oswaldo's problem were always his feet... his clearance of the ball in pressure situations almost always ended falling to the opposing team or out of bounds...

Meh, that's not so bad of a problem for a goalkeeper.

He helped turn the tide for Mexico's NT when Aguirre took over the reigns in the middle of World Cup qualification at a point when things looked rather bleak...

For those that undervalue what he brings to the table... Blanco set up the first goal against the US at Aztec stadium last August... and has always been dependable for penalty kicks (something that can't be said for our other forwards... even Gio has missed a PK for the NT)...

I think what we saw last Friday were effects from entering "cold" into the game (on a chilly afternoon no less...) Initially, he couldn't even control the ball and looked even slower than normal :wow... after warming up, however, he did manage to draw two free-kicks, and gave Carlos Vela a 'crack' pass in the box that should have resulted in a score (one Carlos didn't handle too well)...

Given the weather prognostication he better bundle up if he plans on subbing in....

That's why he takes the shots... the pressure doesn't get to him... (only his old legs). Impeccable shot on yesterday's PK, despite the goalie guessing correctly...

oh... and LOL @ MosesGuthrie... implying that soccer allegiances somehow outweigh nationalistic loyalty... it's only futbol. As passionately as I love the game, playing it, following it, defending it and cheering for it... it's still only a game...

That said,

I root for all CONCACAF teams... it strenghthens the perception of footballing class for this region...

Some people see it as a question of loyalty. I have literally seen people in a sports bar watching a US-Mexico game wearing an American flag t-shirt cheering on Mexico. Some see it as being disloyal to their country of birth. I am not saying that is what they are doing, I am just saying some people I have talked to have that perception. I think that is a bit much. Its only a game.

I can only speak for myself but while I agree with rooting for your home country, I understand why some folks root for the Mexican NT. For years, they didn't have an alternative....the US didn't really have much of a program to follow and Mexico has been a player on the world stage for decades. Since making it back to the WC in 1990 and then hosting in 94, I think there has been a better program to follow and more kids will be able to grow up with a good US program.

I equate it to Spurs fans who dislike the Mavs but like the Cowboys. Its the team you root for, not the city.

The problem here is one that is common in a lot of sports fan bases and really in society. We tend to take things way too personally and if someone doesn't agree with us, we get bent out of shape. I root for all US teams regardless of sport whenever I watch sporting events and I don't agree with my countrymen when they do it but just because I don't like it, doesn't mean they can't do it, shouldn't do it or that I have the right to tell them not to. Its ok that we all don't agree everything or that we do things differently. Root for who you want and have fun. :)

One thing our friend Moses is forgetting is that one of the great things about living in the US is that you have the freedom to root for who you wish. :)

You would defend Oswaldo... :lol

He gave Argentina three goals at the last Copa América... and conceded that goal against Argentina in the 2006 edition of the World Cup (Crespo's goal... Maxi's was pretty much unstoppable for any goalie)...

That said, I'm not trying to defend Oscar Perez... he still seems to be playing out of position on many plays... luckily for Mexico and their defense, the French couldn't really muster up any real scoring opportunities to test 'Conejo's' goalkeeping prowess...

P.S. As far as goalies go... I was a big fan of Adolfo Ríos...

And the third one was a penalty.

Either way, I'm not defending Sanchez, I just don't like Perez. Ochoa should be your keeper.

I can't see youtubes (embedded or otherwise) from work... but if it's the play I recall where Messi lobs it over Oswaldo's head, Oswaldo had no reason to come out and concede that space; Messi was met by a defender with a second one close by... goalies are supposed to come out and shorten the shot angles only when the defense has been compromised... IMO Oswaldo overreacted and paid for it... magistral touch by Messi though...

Ochoa is Mexico's best keeper...

Watch the vid DAF provided when youre not at work, Oswaldo is well within the small box area on the Messi goal...he moves to cover the right post like any other goalie would and Messi just made a great play like he has done so many times to so many goalies. The third goal was a penalty so how exactly is that a keeper goal. The First goal I'll concede, he fucked up.

No goalie is perfect and his good with the NT outweighted the bad. Wasnt he like goalie of the competition in the Confederations Cup? He had a solid WC in 06'. Solid overall performance in that Copa America. Hand-picking a couple of mistakes and saying that he's been horrible because of them is like what recently happened with Ochoa. Its stupid.

Well for me personally its cause I have alot of Mexican ties. Mexican-born parents, grew up with Mexican-culture, still have family in Mexico, visit Mexico annually, etc. I was born here and reside here but I still feel like Im Mexican just as much if not more than I am American (a big contrast from alot of 'mexicans' here in SA). I dont root for Mexico because there was no alternative back in the day with a lack of a quality USA NT...that'd be pretty weak imo. I might be tempted to agree with Moses if I encountered a fan that did that, because I'll be honest I hate people here in SA that will root for the Lakers despite the fact that the Spurs are the only pro team we have.
