Sam Raimi to direct prequel to “Wizard of Oz”
By Joe Williams
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Sam Raimi (“Spider-Man”) has signed to direct a a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” for Disney. Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that the studio is also in negotiations with actor Robert Downey Jr. to star in the project, tentatively tilted “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” (My two cents: a more natural title would be “The Great and Powerful Oz.” My four cents: Don’t screw it up.)
In the script, the wizard is a young circus wrangler who gets blown over the rainbow to Oz, where is mistaken for a know-it-all.

Oh wow. Where's the originality these days? Me and some friends were talkin about all these remakes and I said that it was only a matter of time before some classic is remade and ruined. Something like the godfather, Casablanca, citizen Kane. Something along those lines. Looks like it'll be here before we know it.

Yeah. I remember some customers were looking at a poster advertising "The Godfather" GAME, and they got all excited 'cause they assumed it was a new movie coming out. Why that'd be something to rejoice over is beyond me.
Now, I don't want them to remake Citizen Kane EITHER, but for entirely different reasons.

Saw Wicked the other day. I'm glad they didn't leave "it" alone. That was really good.

Yet.
It would be interesting to see how Baum's Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz would be interpreted today.

So is Robert Downey Jr. going to do his trademark "same character, new costume" performance that everyone loves so much these days.
If someone can tell me the difference between his Tony Stark and his Sherlock Holmes, besides the clothing and the accent, please let me know.

Well in Robert Downey Jr.s case...I think he can actually PLAY different roles...unlike Depp..where he's pretty much basically the same damned character in every movie...

I think Depp is extremely versatile. Blow, Pirates of the Carribbean, Public Enemies, are all very different characters imo. He does have a tendency to sometimes be a little too flat when his character isn't a complete eccentric (see Finding Neverland), but I wouldn't say at all that Depp plays the same character in every film.
RDJ has played different types of roles well, like in Tropic Thunder, but overall he seems to always be the same slick talkin charmer in every film. I honestly don't see much if any difference in his characters from Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes, Good Night and Good Luck, A Scanner Darkly, or Zodiac.

The Godfather is one movie that I hope never gets remade. It can't be any better. There's nowhere to go but down.

Francis Ford Coppola could always follow the lead of his buddies Lucas & Spielberg and digitally edit out all the guns and replace them with walkie-talkies. That always makes a movie better.

My feeling exactly. But I've never been a big Wizard of Oz fan so I don't really care what they do.

Off topic a little but I couldn't stand to watch Citizen Kane after 15 minutes.
Hollywood really has run out of ideas.

Sons, Wicked is awesome. You find out why the Wicked Witch became the Wicked Witch. Its like the Godfather part 2. You end up trying to piece things together.
