Countdown to the start of NBA free agency (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-july1countdown)

A look at the countdown to the start of the July 1 NBA free agency period, when stars such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and others are expected to hit the market:

DAYS REMAINING: 14.

PARTY FOR A KING: In Akron, they’re calling it “The event of the decade.” Seriously, they are. LeBron James’ hometown is throwing The King a bash they’re calling “LeBron Appreciation Day” on Saturday, with a crowd of more than 10,000 expected. Still unclear: If LeBron will actually be attending. “Other cities are just looking at him for his talents, not as a person. However, here in Akron, we’ve proudly watched him grow and have supported him in his journey to superstardom,” says Carl Albright, one of the organizers.

AMARE IN MIAMI: Amare Stoudemire is playing in Miami. For the time being, anyway. The South Florida native is working out in Miami these days, following his usual offseason routine. There’s no indication that’ll mean anything come July 1, but it’s creating speculation that Stoudemire has high hopes of playing alongside Dwyane Wade next season.

D-WADE’S NEXT GAME?: Mark it down, Heat fans. The annual Summer Groove charity game in Miami is July 18 and Wade plans to play. (James has played in the past, by the way, and it’s a certainty that The King has a standing invite if he wants to show this year as well.) But will it be a celebration of Wade’s return to Miami, or part of his long goodbye to South Florida? Too early to tell. “I can’t even think that far ahead,” Wade said at a promotional appearance for the charity weekend he’ll headline alongside Alonzo Mourning.

TWEET OF THE DAY: “Like everyone else A-Rod wondered where LeBron is going to wind up next year & like everyone else I had no answer.”—Mike Fratello, who Tweeted a photo of himself chatting with Alex Rodriguez before a Yankees-Phillies game this week.

Chris Bosh playing the free agency poker game (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/)
By Kurt Helin

Chris Bosh is basketball professional, not a poker professional.

But right now he is a little of both. And there are a lot of chips in play.

There are a lot of free agent variables -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and whether or not he can lure a running mate to Miami, what Chicago has to offer, New York's offer, the Nets offer.

Nobody knows how Bosh is going to play his had, except that he is likely leaving Toronto. There are rumors he wants to go where LeBron goes. Or go where Wade goes. Or be sent to the Lakers. Or be his own man. Nobody knows.

Including Bosh, based on what he told (http://sportsradiointerviews.com/2010/06/17/chris-bosh-wants-to-go-somehwere-he-can-win/) ESPN 710 in Los Angeles (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/radio/index).

"To be honest, everybody is laying low. Nobody is expressing or talking in depth. It seems like it's a poker game and nobody is folding and you can't see their cards. It's interesting. I mean it is funny that we're all in the same boat, we were all on the national team, and we all won the gold medal together. I think that's a funny aspect. So far there hasn't been a whole lot of talk about it. I've seen some guys but they don't say much. I kinda respect it because I get that question all the time and I don't like thinking about every day. The last thing I want to do is bug him. There will be a time and place for it."

That time and place is coming fast. We're all about to see the flop and the bidding is about to go way up.

DAYS REMAINING: 13.

BOSH ANXIOUS: Chris Bosh won’t wait for LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or anyone else to make their free-agent decisions before choosing where he’ll play for the next few seasons. Bosh tells SNY television, “I can’t just sit around and wait. I have to be proactive with my choices and what’s going to make me happy. And I just have to make sure that I take my time and make the right decision.” Further, Bosh reaffirmed what Wade has said, that there won’t be a “free agent summit” or anything of the sort. And his recent dinner with Wade? Bosh says it was just two pals and former Olympic teammates hanging out, with no talk of business.

DRAFT HINTS: The thinking among plenty of free agents or free-agents-to-be is that draft night will provide some hints as far as what teams are thinking heading into July 1. The Heat, for example, have four draft picks, three of them in the second round, and could be looking to make deals. “I think a lot might happen on draft night, so we’ll see,” Wade says.

(DON’T) GO FISH: The Lakers have some free agent issues to deal with this summer, specifically the chance that Derek Fisher could go elsewhere. Kobe Bryant says that won’t happen. “He’s not going anywhere,” Bryant insists. The Lakers will likely be a player in the free agent sweepstakes, especially if Bosh becomes available through sign-and-trade options. And the idea of facing a Wade-James or Bosh-James combination in the 2011 NBA finals was something Bryant didn’t want to think about Thursday. “Man, I don’t want to think about that,” he groaned.

TWEET OF THE DAY: Early Friday morning, Wade went on strike. Twitter strike. “From ths moment on I’m on twttr hiatus until after Free agency is ova,” was Wade’s tweet. Typos not withstanding, the message is clear—it’s time to get serious about the summer.

Countdown to the start of NBA free agency (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-july1countdown)

DAYS REMAINING: 12.

LOCAL GUY DOES GOOD: It wasn’t an NBA championship trophy, but not bad nonetheless. LeBron James didn’t disappoint fans from his hometown of Akron, Ohio, on Saturday, showing up briefly at the University of Akron for “LeBron Appreciation Day.” He received a crystal trophy from local officials, and James told the crowd that “everything I do is for this city.” Alas, no mention of free agent plans, however.

YES, THERE IS AN OFFSEASON: Magic coach Stan Van Gundy—who had grown tired of free-agency talk a month ago or so—held court for more than an hour Saturday watching the Florida Marlins take batting practice. Wearing shorts and sandals, Van Gundy seemed perfectly relaxed. No questions from the Marlins about what’ll happen July 1, either.

HE LOVES L.A.: The Lakers might already be one step closer to winning a third straight championship. Free agent guard Derek Fisher—a five-time champion with the Lakers, and who’s considered so vital that Kobe Bryant said he wouldn’t allow Fisher to leave this summer—indicated on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Friday night that he’ll be back with the Lakers. Of course, in the same interview, Sasha Vujacic said he thought the World Cup match his native Slovenia tied with the United States on Friday was a “fair” result, and Ron Artest revealed that he hadn’t slept nor showered, despite 24 hours passing since Game 7 ended. So take it for what it’s worth.

TWEET OF THE DAY: OK, he’s not a marquee free agent. But Earl Barron, most recently of the Knicks, is taking cues from Artest this summer. “Ron Artest said he worked out 4 times a day last summer. He’s a beast. All that hard work paid off. I wanna go back to the gym now,” Barron tweets. Is that the first recorded instance of someone looking for a contract and using Artest as a role model? Hmm.

Countdown to the start of NBA free agency (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=txjuly1countdown)

DAYS REMAINING: 11.

AT STAKE: The value of a max contract the players like James, Wade and Bosh could sign will be known in the coming days, when the NBA announces the 2010-11 salary cap number. (It’s all based on that and will almost certainly be in the range of $125-127 million for a six-year deal. But without the official cap number, it all remains a guessing game.) And of course, it’ll tell teams exactly what they have to spend when the free agency window opens.

DON’T LE-LEAVE!: One of the Cleveland Indians’ minor league teams is hoping to help keep James around. The Lake County (Ohio) Captains, the team’s Class A affiliate, plan to change their name to the LeLake LeCounty LeCaptains for “Please Stay LeBron!” night on July 1. Every LeCaptains player plans to add the “Le” prefix to his first name for the game. The team is asking fans to wear Cavs’ gear and some tickets will be $6 to honor James’ new jersey number.

WADE PACKETS ARRIVE: The kits of items like signs and stickers from the “We Want Wade” organizing campaign run by the Miami Heat arrived in many mailboxes last week. (Supplies are completely gone, the Heat say.) So now, the team plans to give away T-shirts and posters to the first 3,000 plans at their draft party Thursday night.

TWEET OF THE DAY: From Quentin Richardson, who had a big 2009-10 season for Miami and is a free agent as well. “Happy Father’s Day to all the Father’s out there handling their biz and taking care of their kids and being real Fathers,” he tweeted.

10 Things To Know For Free Agency (http://espn.go.com/nba/dailydime/_/page/dime-freeagency-100619/free-agency-dime)
ESPN.com

When the clock strikes midnight on Sunday, it will be just 10 days until the date the NBA has had circled on its calendar for some time: July 1.

So now that the scintillating Celtics-Lakers series has ended, let's take a fresh look at the free-agency situation.

With 10 days to go, here are 10 things to know:

1. All about LeBron

Akron, Ohio, held a LeBron Appreciation Day rally on Saturday, and in a surprise move, LeBron James showed up after most had left.

Like his appearance, his statement was brief and noncommittal. "Akron is my home, it's my life," James told the remaining crowd. "Everything I do is for this city. I'm going to continue to do great things. I love every last one of you all. Akron is home."

A 19-year-old from Parma, Ohio, brought a homemade flag to the event bearing the word "Hope."

But so far, all the local fans are hearing is "Nope" -- as in, nope, LeBron's not ready to commit to staying with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

And if nothing changes, then when July 1 comes 10 days from midnight, LeBron will no longer be a Cav unless and until he decides that his future lies in the same place as his past.

What's next in the LeBron Watch? For one thing, the Cavs are moving ahead in their coaching search, with Byron Scott the leading candidate now that Tom Izzo has decided to stay in college.

2. More about LeBron

Starting Sunday, ESPN's "SportsCenter" will have a three-part series on LeBron's free agency:

Sunday: The Wooing of LeBron: How cities have made their case
Monday: Global Marketing: How LeBron's decision will impact global marketing
Tuesday: Worldwide Wes: How much influence does William Wesley have?

And to see Chad Ford's reports on how New York, New Jersey and Chicago plan to woo LeBron, click the following: Knicks (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=Knicks-100525&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba %2finsider%2fcolumns%2fstory%3fcolumnist%3dford_ch ad%26page%3dKnicks-100525) | Nets (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=nets-100614&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba %2finsider%2fcolumns%2fstory%3fcolumnist%3dford_ch ad%26page%3dnets-100614) | Bulls (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=Bulls-100610&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba %2finsider%2fcolumns%2fstory%3fcolumnist%3dford_ch ad%26page%3dBulls-100610)

Still to come in the next few days from Ford: How the Heat, Clippers, Wizards, Mavs and Cavs plan to win the LeBron sweepstakes.

See the LeBron Tracker (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/feature/index?page=LeBron-Tracker) for everything on Bron.

3. Actually, it's not all about LeBron

Although fellow free agent-to-be Chris Bosh reportedly is very interested in playing alongside LeBron, he also has sent mixed signals on that front. Late last week he talked to SNY about the chance to play for the Knicks with LeBron. "Any time you have the opportunity to play with certain guys, you have to take that into consideration," Bosh said. "When it all goes down, [LeBron is] gonna be one of the all-time greats. At the same time, I can't just sit around and wait. I have to be proactive with my choices and what's gonna make me happy. I have to make sure I take my time and make the right decision."

Interpret that as you will. From here, it looks about as clear as everything else in the murky world of free agency.

4. Silence is golden?

With all the ambiguity from James and Bosh, maybe Friday's pronouncement from Dwyane Wade on Twitter will come as welcome news to some ears (http://twitter.com/dwadeofficial/status/16445866681): "I wanna thank all my fans 4 thr support thur everything. From ths moment on I'm on twttr hiatus until after Free agency is ova.."

But before that, Wade told ESPN.com's J.A. Adande on June 13 that he intends to bring other players to Miami (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5283536) rather than search for a better opportunity: "It's going to be fit with me first," Wade said. "I've made that very clear. Do I want to leave? Nope. Mmm-hmm. I want to be in Miami. That's where it starts."

5. The free-agent summit

Will it happen? Will LeBron, D-Wade and others get together to discuss their futures?

Since Wade's initial claim (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5224873) that he would be getting together with other superstars to discuss the future, the whole idea has been splashed with cold water (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5239414) by Wade's agent, David Stern (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5249480) and most recently Bosh and Carlos Boozer.

But as Wade has made clear, conversations have been and will be happening, summit or no summit.

6. Key dates

July 1: Free agents can have discussions with teams and declare their intentions, but they can't sign. Some think it will all be over quickly, as soon as LeBron declares his intentions. But others expect that during this time, the private jets will be soaring, the champagne will be flowing and dreams will be dreamed by front-office types and fans alike.

July 8: Free agents can officially sign. Will we know everything by then, or will we still be days or weeks away?

7. Where will they go?

You don't have to go to Vegas to play the slots, pal. Here's the best spot to see how our NBA experts think free agency could play out: Free Agent Slot Machine (http://espn.go.com/nba/features/freeagentslotmachine)

8. Salary-cap space

The New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves all have significant room in the cap that was set at a relatively rosy $56.1 million on April 14. Here's how the chase shapes up (http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/13610/the-teams-who-will-compete-in-2010-free-agency), according to Kevin Arnovitz.

9. The buyer's guide

Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer and Amare Stoudemire have been profiled so far.

Coming up: Dirk Nowitzki (Monday), David Lee (Tuesday), Dwyane Wade (Wednesday), Joe Johnson (Thursday), Rudy Gay (Friday), Ray Allen (Saturday), The bargain bin (June 28)

10. Three words: Iverson, the comeback

His agent says Iverson wants to help a team win a championship. We're not talking practice; we're talking title (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5301538).

DAYS REMAINING: 10.

IS THE DOC IN?: The Celtics might have more free agent issues than just Ray Allen this summer. In his regular (and possibly final) spot on Boston sports radio station WEEI, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he thinks Allen and Paul Pierce (who could opt out) will come back, but added that he’ll know his status for 2010-11 before the players have to decide. “I could look you in the eye and tell you I have not made a decision,” Rivers said. While it’s expected Rivers is considering at least a year off to be with his family, it’s also expected that teams with cap space will pursue Allen.

LETURNOUT: LeBron James has more fans in his hometown of Akron, Ohio than first thought. After school officials initially said “LeBron Appreciation Day” attracted 4,000 fans to the University of Akron last weekend, event organizers released a revised number Monday, saying 8,500 attended. James spoke briefly at the event, but did not discuss free agency.

MILLER TIME: Mike Miller likely will be among that second-tier of free agents who get plenty of phone calls on July 1. The sharpshooter told the Argus Leader of Sioux Falls, S.D. last weekend that he - like everybody else, it seems - is looking for a playoff-bound team. “This time, if it doesn’t work out, there’s no one to blame but myself,” Miller said.

TWEET OF THE DAY: From Rudy Gay, who’s been working out in South Florida with Amare Stoudemire and others. “Anything worth having is worth working hard for,” Gay tweeted.

DAYS REMAINING: 9.

UNDERSTATEMENT ALERT: Like many other free agents, David Lee will be waiting to see what James, Wade and Bosh do closely, knowing the decisions they make after July 1 could significantly shape his immediate future. He tells the Daily News that James would be a neat fit for the Knicks. “Anytime you add LeBron plus a few pieces, you’ve got a chance to be really successful,” Lee says. You think?

BOSH’S FUTURE: Raptors president and GM Bryan Colangelo says draft night will be challenging, mainly because the big question in Toronto - Is Bosh staying or going? - remains unanswered. Sort of makes it tough to plan a team’s future. “We have to be prepared for life with and without Chris,” Colangelo said Tuesday. The Raptors have no new sense on Bosh’s plans. Bosh will co-host ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike” on Thursday, although it’s unknown if he’ll drop any hints on his plan for July 1 and beyond.

HEAT SPEAK: Hey, not everyone has totally overlooked Thursday’s NBA draft as just an insignificant step before the free agency blitz starts July 1. Still, it’s clear that teams will take a slightly different approach to the draft this season. “We wish free agency was first then the draft to fill in gaps, but it doesn’t work that way,” says Chet Kammerer, vice president of player personnel - i.e., draft guru - for the Miami Heat.

TWEET OF THE DAY: “Que grande Messi por favor!” - Yes, Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi is great, according to the Spurs’ Manu Ginobili, who signed his extension a few months ago and therefore can ignore free agency to concentrate on that little World Cup event going on in South Africa for the next few weeks.

Countdown to the start of NBA free agency (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-july1countdown)

DAYS REMAINING: 8.

WHY ASK WHY? One of the most-asked questions by fans on message boards during the free-agent buildup is some version of “Why can’t Wade/Bosh/James/Dirk/etc. sign on July 1?” The reason is simple. There’s a moratorium for a week after the free agency window opens, at which time the league calculates revenue from the just-completed season. From that number-crunching, the salary cap for 2010-11 gets set, and that probably won’t be announced until July 6 or 7, based on recent history. Without the cap number, no team knows exactly what it can spend on a contract. Hence, nothing can get officially done, though many players will agree to deals beforehand.

COMIC RELIEF: Here’s how you know free agency and the New York Knicks’ soon-to-begin pursuit of James is a big deal—it’s the butt of jokes on CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman.” A frequent basher of the Mets, Letterman took time Tuesday night to make a funny about the Knicks. “I know what you’re thinking. Are they still in the league?” Letterman deadpanned. “Yes. They’re traveling with the Harlem Globetrotters.” King James is apparently a fan of the late-night legend—he beat Letterman 5-2 in an on-air shooting contest last fall, when Dave teased him about “beating a guy who’s 62.”

FARMAR FAR GONE? Kobe Bryant has made clear that he’s not losing Derek Fisher in free agency (though that’s technically not for him to decide, of course). He might lose one of the bench keys to the Lakers’ title run, though, after July 1, with Jordan Farmar indicating this week that he might need greener pastures next season. “I need to establish myself as somebody who can lead a team,” Farmar said. Add him to that list of second-level guys who desperately hope Wade, James and Bosh get their contracts done quickly, so the rest of the league can get pulled out of limbo.

TWEET OF THE DAY: Remember, not everyone is totally wrapped up in July 1 mania. There is that little matter of a draft Thursday night. “Sittin in my room waitin for victoryyy,” was one of Evan Turner’s tweets as the Ohio State product counted down the hours before he’s likely to get picked No. 2 behind John Wall on Thursday night.

Bosh says free-agency is ‘scary but … exciting’ (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-freeagency-bosh)
By Tim Reynolds

Chris Bosh believes there will be a clear order of priority when the most-awaited free agent period in NBA history opens at 12:01 a.m. on July 1.

LeBron James comes first.

Everybody else comes second.

Appearing as a co-host on ESPN Radio Thursday morning, the Toronto Raptors’ All-Star forward and marquee piece of this summer’s sparkling class of NBA free agents said when the offseason-movement window opens, the entire league, himself included, will be waiting to see what decision Cleveland’s two-time MVP makes about his future.

“Am I waiting on LeBron? Pretty much,” Bosh said. “I think everyone has to. I have to as well.”

And while he offered no hints about his own future, Bosh believes what James does could affect everything else that goes on this summer.

“He’s a great player and I would be crazy to think that all the teams that are considering him, they would talk to somebody else first,” Bosh said. “I think everybody is going to be going at him first.

“They’ll probably call him at 12:01,” Bosh added. “Hopefully they’ll call me at 12:02.”

Bosh, James and Miami’s Dwyane Wade are the headliners of the class that’s expected to opt out of their current deals and become free agents on July 1.

“This is something we’ve kind of been talking about for four years now,” Bosh said. “And the day is finally here. It’s kind of scary but it’s exciting.”

The No. 4 pick in the 2003 draft, Bosh averaged 24.0 points and 10.8 rebounds for the Raptors last season. Toronto hopes to keep Bosh, but is also preparing for the possibility of him joining another club.

Bosh insisted he could return to Toronto.

“Toronto is a great place. … They have a lot of good things going,” Bosh said. “And they’re definitely a team that I’m going to be looking at very hard because they can do things that other teams can’t.”

The Raptors can offer a six-year deal worth approximately $127 million. No other team could offer Bosh more than a five-year pact that would likely be worth around $97 million.

Bosh stressed he would also be happy alongside another elite player.

“I would like to contribute big to somebody,” Bosh said. “Toronto made me their focal point and they’ve built around me for the last few years and just to have that feeling there, it was good, because going down into the stretch of the games I knew the ball was going to be in my hands and I knew that I was the guy who had to make my teammates better.”

Bosh said he has not talked with other marquee free agents, though suggested that eventually he and James will speak.

James has been tightlipped about all things related to this summer, and Bosh doesn’t have any insight into his thinking either.

“I really, honestly have no idea,” Bosh said. “I think he’s a very business-savvy guy that wants to win a championship, so he’s looking at everything from each aspect. He wants to win, but at the same time, he wants to maintain his presence in the NBA market and really the athletic market around the world because he’s one of the household names.”

Unlike Wade, who insists he wants to stay in Miami if the Heat return to a championship-contending level, Bosh has not offered any favorites.

He believes Wade’s top choice is to stay in Miami, but hinted it’s still not certain.

“He killed a lot of noise with that,” Bosh said. “But at the same time, before he goes to sleep at night, he has to think of different scenarios because he’s a free agent and you hold the keys to your own success, your own future. It’s just something that everybody thinks about and the scenarios that you run through is crazy.”

Bosh and Wade share an agent, Chicago-based Henry Thomas, who has simply advised Bosh to “be ready” for anything on July 1.

Bosh said he’ll have a bag packed in case a quick visit anywhere is arranged.

“I can kind of sit back and see what’s going to happen and see what decision or what way guys are going to go,” Bosh said. “So when they do make that move or whatever, I can look at things better.”

Much like James and Wade, Bosh is getting wooed from all possible angles, hearing from people in just about every NBA city about why he should sign there for the next five or six seasons.

At first, Bosh said, it was overwhelming.

“It’s just become part of my life, a part of my everyday life,” Bosh said.
