Is it too early for any news regarding the team? I am geared up for another great tournament!

You're not too early. Don't really have high expectations this year for WC. Smodis is out, the Lorbek brothers are out, don't even get me started on Vujacic. I am just waiting for Beno or Dragic to cancel, maybe they both will. We don't have any front court that can play decent ball. We don't have wings, but we never had those anyway. All we have left are guards. It's gonna be fun that's for sure. :(

Smodis cannot help the team anymore. He is no absence. He can barely even play at all. Vujacic is also no absence. he is just a cancer in the team. Domen Lorbek is not very good either and does not matter really.

The only loss there is Erazem Lorbek. But I have to say that is a huge loss for Slovenia. With him they could have challenged for a medal. Without him I think quarterfinal would be good accomplishment for them.

LMAO... This looks pathetic.
Dragic, Beno and Nachbar should play good. I hope Lakovič will hit some trees and Bečirovič can play better than he did in the club. But what the fuck is a guy like Čebular even on the list. This is just pathetic. Even Klobučar suck ass, and couldn't do shit in Olimpija where he should play like a star. PF/C position is also bad. LOL Brezec.
I gues we can make it out of the group stage, but after that we'll see.
And I'm still pissed at the fact that Memi Becirovic is our coach.

Oh and, FUCK YOU Emir Prelđič, you moron.
And fuck even Lorbek. 22 min. per game made him tired. Then what could Beno say.

Kamnik

Yeah those would be my second choices. They aren't my first because Zupan seems more versatile to me, can play the 4 or 5 while Vidmar is a 5 and I still have memories of him being incredibly clumsy. Muric is playing for the SLO national team up to 20 years old and I heard he's pretty good. I'm just not sure Klobucar has what it takes, though maybe a second try would be good for him.

I would take vidmar over Zupan too, you can always push Nachbar to 4 (which we're probably do a lot anyway). Or maybe drop Murič and go with 5 bigs.

Why the fuck do we always get pathetic coaches, why!??!

Oh and fuck even Beno for thinking he's a superstar.

After the Euro Cup everyone said that they will play on WC, and then this.

First pussy Lorbek who is tired cause he played 20 minutes per game in 40 matches, now Udrih, Prelđič who wants to play for Bosnia and Turkey and all the others.

Now it's all on Dragič. Just great. Now I'll have to watch players like Čebular and Klobučar...

Udrih and many other reporters and fans still don't get it... IT IS NOT ABOUT HIM, it is all about the national team.

This is a not a club where you negotiate things out; for NT you either play or not.

And honestly said... If Dragič brothers, Bečirovič and Lakovič play we don't really need him that much.

InK
07-22-2010, 11:19 AM
We werent doing anything this year as it was. Udrih beeing a bitch yeah, but there was really no need to put him in this situation. He is clearly a better player at this point then Lakovič, so why did it had to come to this point, is beyond me.

And yeh, Kamnik, players need to show some national pride and put their egos aside when they play for the National team; but at the same time it would be nice if coaches acted like that as well. Memi's job is to play our best players, if he refuses to do that, or if is incapable of giving Beno a good reason or two, as to why he is the backup, then fuck him as well.

Really all in all, this are things as usual as far as our NT goes. Its allways the same kind of pathetic drama which never yields any results. And just when we all thought we are turning a new page tbh.... really just fuck em all.

Players with big ego's are a cancer; even if they are right about some things.

And after last year in Poland I don't think anyone should underestimate Lakovič... he gets nothing but respect from me.

I bashed him before the EC and then ate shitloads of crow when he played almost 40 minutes a game and was actually our second best player.

I watched a bit of Croatia-Italy friendly yesterday.

Croatia has a much younger team this time around, especially under the basket, where i also think they are the weakest. They rely on fast paced game and the 3 quite a lot. Overall if we slow down the tempo and force feed our C's and stop their outside shooting on the defensive end, i think Croatia is very beatable. If we go into run&gun match with them, we'll be blown out.

We are not so good in the class of Slovenia and the rest, but we are good, underdogs. Especially last year in september, we had a good squad. We did pretty well on Eurobasket and I think we could have done much more, but the lack of experience also plays a part.

It was the first eurobasket for us since 1999. So It has just started for us, we need to develop. The problem with our team is that they dont know how to handle critical situations so well. Situations which can decide a game, when they need to step up. Even if you are the better team, in such situations you can still lose it. Now we have the same good players like last year except for the experienced Vrbica Stefanov.

It's a Slovenian thing. Happens before all the tournaments. Half the team quits, because:

a) They don't like the coach

c) They don't like the role they are given
d) They don't like to practice too hard.

He will be signed as a foreign player and will not be using a Greek passport or his "Makris" surname. He never served his military commitment for Greece. At one time, he would not travel to Greece with the NT, but somehow he worked it out to go there for the 2008 Olympic qualifier tournament. I think, now, as long as he does not use his Greek citizenship, he is fine playing there.

At one time, he would not travel to Greece with the NT, but somehow he worked it out to go there for the 2008 Olympic qualifier tournament. I think, now, as long as he does not use his Greek citizenship, he is fine playing there.

After he got his Greek citizenship he ran away from the country as soon as his time came to serve in the army. So because of this the sports federation won't let Olympiacos count him as a Greek as punishment. :lol

What if anything is different for a player listed as a foreign player? Are there restrictions for how many minutes or what kind of tournaments he can play?

The number of foreign players playing for the team is limited. If they give greek citizenship to foreign players, they can sign more of them.

It is a good option for Rasho. He wanted to be on a team for which he still had the opportunity to contribute but that also had a chance to compete for a championship. Hopefully, the team can get back to the Euroleague Final Four again this upcoming season. The coach really wanted Rasho, too, and that is always a good sign. He could have stayed in the NBA if he did not care for whom or where he played or if he sat on the bench all season, but he missed the chance to be on a team that had a real chance to win.

In Greece each team can only have 3 Bosman players (this means Europeans who are not Greek) on the roster. So with Rasho having Greek citizenship when they sign him they thought of course he will not count against this so they could sign other foreign European players if they want.

Funny thing is the sports federation waited until after he signed before telling the club they would count him as a foreign player as punishment that he did not serve yet in the army like he is supposed to.

So first Macedonia, then Australia, now New Zeland... OMG, how pathetic can this team really be. I can bet that me and some random guys from the playground would defeat one of those teams, but not our national team. If fucking Mehmet gets another chance after the WC, which we will finish in the 2nd round, cause I gues they will defeat Tunisia and Iran (now I hope they don't cause I can't watch them), then I'm gonna go to our nationals team organisation and kill everyone that's inthere, and I'm dead serious. Those motherfuckers don't deserve to live. Pathetic old morons. You can't have so much talent in the country and not use it. First Rasho quit, now Lorbeks and Smodiš, Udrih who is 1000000000000000000000000000000000X better than Fuckovič is sent home and we all know the Vujacic case. I also don't know why is there some guy like Cebular even in the squad if we could pick Joksimovič or even Ariel McDonald who's like 40 years old and is still better than that piece of shit. LOL @ Slokar and Rizvič. Vidmar also sucks, but I gues he's better than those two. Why is there no Pavič in the team, who is much better than the bosnian bitch Rizvič. I'm just saying that if this team would have a coach that is good and is not from our country, all of the good players would play, even Rasho. A real coach could also bring Preldzic back who thinks he should play for Bosnia. Fuck that, lets rather give Bosnia our center duo of Rizvič and Begič. Now, those two can go there where they belong.
And LOL at Jagodnik... Hahahaha, he's 36 or something and he's on the team just cause he's a fighter and he's experienced. Hahahaha, my friends are also fighters when it comes to basketball, but if you've got no talent then you suck and so does Jagoda. And experienced my ass. The guy's just old and he sucks.
So fuck this team, fuck our fucking coach and fuck our basketball organisation!!
LOL @ Lakovič cause he's Ricky Rubio's bitch and he plays 5 minutes for his club and now he can be our first play.
LOL @ Bečirovič cause he can do whatever he wants cause his father MEHMET is his coach. Ohh, I hope his injury is serious and he won't go to the WC. And I don't like to se him injured, I just want that he'll not be ready for the WC.
LOL @ Nachbar cause he can't make a basket.. OK he made some today, but in the last two years he's pathetic jump shot is really pathetic!
LOL @ Slokar cause he can't make FT, three pointer, can't jump, dunk and he should not be a basketball player. Last year at least he made some threes, but now he looks like he's another guy with the same stupid face!
LOL @ Rizvič cause even when he plays for a club like Olimpija he can't score 10 points a game and now the guy is playing 20 minutes a game for the NT. Just great.
LOL @ Jagodnik cause I already said what's wrong with him.
LOL @ Klobučar cause he's as pathetic as Rizvič. If you can't score 10 points a game for the most pathetic club in Europe then you really must be a pathetic basketball player. And LOL @ him going to Partizan, those morons don't know what are they getting.
LOL @ Samo Udrih who can only shoot threes and he's also good at missing them.
LOL @ Zupan. I know he can't hear, but if he can't you don't bring him to the national team. If he had moves like Lorbek then you bring the guy, but when he can't do shit you just say goodbye to him. Oh, right he won't hear you. :P
LOL @ Vidmar cause he can't make free throws and can't guard. But he can make fouls. :D
Hey Brezec you're lucky cause I can't say anything bad about you, just that you can't guard and you'r defense is on Vidmar's level, but hey, at least you can make a basket. :))
Dragič I hope you'll quit on this team and go back to the US.

So this is what I think. Yea, I know we will play better, we just need some more practice... Yea right!! Go practice with your dicks and go fuck yourselfs!

No matter who plays, we'll always be a 6-12th team. If everyone played, we'd play below expectations and finish somewhere between 6th and 12th place. If we are missing some players, some other players step up and we reach our potential: 6th-12th place.

TUN/SLO - Slovenia blow out Tunisia
28/08/2010

Tunisia vs Slovenia. Day 1 of the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. 28 August 2010. Preliminary round

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) -Slovenia got their noses in front of tournament debutants Tunisia in the first half and tore them apart in the second in the opening game of Group B at the FIBA World Championship.

Roared on by an estimated 3,000 of their own fans at the Abdi Ipecki, Slovenia pulled away for a 80-56 triumph.

Mehmed Becirovic's men encountered stiff resistance in the early going with Tunisia clawing back a double-digit deficit to just six points late the second quarter.

Slovenia led but Tunisia grew in confidence in the second quarter and twice pulled to within six points, the second time after a lay-up by Marouan Kechrid with 3:06 left to make it 34-28.

Bostjan Nachbar buried a three-pointer and he then came up with a steal and passed ahead to Goran Dragic who soared in for a basket and a 39-28 advantage at half-time.

Slovenia held Tunisia to just one point in the first five minutes of the third quarter and took a 50-29 stranglehold on the contest.

The European team, which plays the USA on Sunday, cruised the rest of the way.

ISTANBUL (World Championship) - Team USA passed another test with flying colors on Sunday at the FIBA World Championship in Turkey with a 99-77 triumph over Slovenia.

In front of a raucous, festive Abdi Ipekci crowd - the majority of them Slovenians - the Americans prevailed in Group B after getting excellent performances from several players.

The USA, who whipped Croatia in their opener on Saturday, got plenty of scoring again from Kevin Durant while the defense, rebounding and fastbreaks killed any chance of a Slovenia upset.

The Americans took the lead for good when they scored 10 underanswered points at the start of the game for a 12-2 advantage. Slovenia battled back and closed the gap to 27-21 after a three-ball from Samo Udrih and a dunk by Primoz Brezec, but the USA finished the half with a 15-7 run to go on top at 42-28. Durant had 15 points and a team-high six boards at the break.

The United States delivered the knockout in the first five minutes of the second half, outscoring the European team 14-4.

Slovenia also had no answers for the tenacious and relentless Kevin Love, who came off the bench to dominate on the boards.

At the end of the third quarter, Love had nine rebounds - four on the offensive glass - to go with his 10 points.

He ended up with a double-double (10 pts, 11 rbs).

On one play, Love boxed out Slovenia's Uros Slokar and used just one hand to grab the rebound and score.

Former NBA man Bostjan Nachbar matched the Americans with a terrific first half and ended up with 13 points while fans also got a good look at the promising center Gasper Vidmar who finished with 10 points, most of them on thunderous dunks.

It's going to take an extraordinary effort to beat the Americans, who look every bit as good as the side that captured a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics.

Eric Gordon gave the Americans a boost from long range against Croatia but on Sunday it was Rudy Gay who drilled a trio of three-balls.

More important for coach Mike Krzyzewski was Gay's defense.

He was one of several USA players with at least one block and one steal.

Quotes:

USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski: "We are pleased to beat an outstanding Slovenia team. It was tough because they forced us to make turnovers. My team played so hard and as long as we get that effort, we are going to do well. It was a great crowd (mainly Slovenian fans) but all of us have played in much tougher environments than this one."

Slovenia head coach Mehmed Becirovic: "This is a great USA team. They are very athletic, very aggressive and get a lot of point off turnovers. I am not disappointed with the performance of my team. They tried their best."

If we shut down Huertas and put offensive pressure on Splitter in early stages of the game, we have a good shot at winning this. Splitter should get two or three early fouls so he can be benched. Slokar, Zupan and Brezec can take care of that. Let Barbosa play. Even if he hits a couple of shots, he'll start chucking threes towards the end.

BRAZIL MEET SLOVENIA IN CRUNCH GAME

ISTANBUL (FIBA World Championship) - Iran's FIBA World Championship game against the United States in Istanbul is raising eyebrows because of the political relations between the two countries, but the contest that is far more significant to Group B and the competition itself pits Brazil against Slovenia.

The winner of the clash between the Brazilians and the Slovenians will have the inside track to second place in the pool.

Brazil, now coached by Argentinian master tactician and psychologist Ruben Magnano, nearly upset the United States on Monday night but lost 70-68 while Slovenia grinded out a 91-84 triumph over Croatia.

The results left both Brazil and Slovenia with 2-1 records with the USA leading Group B at 3-1.

The good news for Brazil is the expected return of Anderson Varejao, the Cleveland Cavaliers power forward.

Anderson missed the first three days with an ankle injury and had to sit a frustrating 40 minutes as his teammates battled the star-laden USA.

Magnano revealed after the game that Anderson could have played but was rested as a precaution.

With no Group C games on Tuesday, Anderson gained an additional day to rest.

Slovenia have looked formidable in Istanbul, despite having undergone major changes since last summer's great team that finished fourth at the EuroBasket.

Bostjan Nachbar was in last year’s team and his role has become even more important.

Should Slovenia advance to the final stages of the tournament, he will garner consideration for the all-tournament team.

Slovenia did not click on all cylinders against Croatia in the first half but buoyed by their 3,000 travelling fans, they claimed a seven-point triumph.

Brazil may have lost against the United States but they played so well that a lot of people are now tipping them to contend for a medal.

Memi Becirovic, the Slovenia coach, watched the contest and said: “Brazil played very well, but tomorrow (Wednesday) will be a new game.”

Slovenia survives Brazil's rally, pulls off upset win

Posted Sep 1 2010 6:03PM

ISTANBUL (AP) -- Jaka Lakovic scored 20 points, hitting consecutive 3-pointers to halt a furious Brazil comeback, and Slovenia blew nearly all of a 17-point lead before holding on for an 80-77 victory Wednesday.

Slovenia (3-1) took sole possession of second place in Group B, while Brazil (2-2) came up just short again after losing by two to the United States on Monday.

Brazil forward Anderson Varejao of the Cleveland Cavaliers played for the first time after missing the first three games of the world championship while recovering from a sprained ankle. He had four points and four rebounds in 23 minutes.

Primoz Brezec hit his first seven shots and scored 16 points to help the Slovenians take a 14-point halftime lead. A 3-pointer to open the second half made it a 17-point game, but Brazil began chipping away and pulled within 70-68 on Tiago Splitter's basket with 4:25 remaining.

Lakovic hit a 3 with 3:32 remaining, then nailed another about a minute later to make it 76-68. Brazil got back within five in the final minute, but Bostjan Nachbar hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 21 seconds to play to help the Slovenians pull it out.

Nachbar finished with 15 points and Goran Dragic of the Phoenix Suns had 10 for Slovenia, which shot 57 percent from the field.

Marcelo Machado scored 20 points and Splitter added 19 for Brazil. Leandro Barbosa shot just 6 of 18 and had 12.

LAKOVIC LEADS SLOVENIA HOME

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Slovenia captain Jaka Lakovic came to the rescue and fired his side to a vital Group B win over Brazil at the Abdi Ipekci on Wednesday night.

With Brazil having shaved a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to 70-68 Lakovic, who visited with FIBATV.Com after the win, buried back-to-back three-pointers that helped the Slovenians keep their noses in front and record an 80-77 triumph.

Slovenia seemed to have taken command with a 14-0 run in the second quarter that put them on top, 34-18.

The Brazilians, who nearly upset the United States on Monday, refused to go quietly.

They mounted the comeback with starters Marcelo Huertas and Alex Garcia on the bench.

Instead it was super sub Marcelo Machado, along with Nezinho, who gave excellent defense at the top of a two-three zone that helped force turnovers and allowed the Brazilians to get fastbreak points and back into the game.

Slovenia’s lead was 70-53 with 9:25 to go in the contest when they lost their way.

Two straight three-pointers by Marcelo Machado and then a Leandro Barbosa fastbreak layup after a Machado steal cut the deficit to 70-61.

Machado then came up with a steal and raced down the floor for another lay-up before burying a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 70-66.

His three-ball gave Machado 14 points.

Tiago Splitter (19 points) added a basket down low with 4:20 remaining to cap the 15-0 Brazil run.

The big center who was the Spanish ACB's best player in 2009-10 then had a chance to level the game the next time down the floor but missed and Lakovic shortly after knocked down the first of his two three-pointers for a 73-68 advantage.

Lakovic then nailed his second three-ball with 2:32 remaining for a 76-68 lead.

Brazil still weren't done and kept the pressure on but Lakovic again beat them.

Clinging to a 76-71 lead in the final minute, Lakovic dribbled into the lane and as the Brazilians converged, he passed to Bostjan Nachbar in the right corner and the veteran made his second three-pointer of the night to ice the victory.

Lakovic finished with 20 points, including six shots from long range, while Primoz Brezec 16 and Nachbar had 15.

Machado ended up with a team-high 20 points for Brazil.

Brazil got a lift from Anderson Varejao, who missed the opening three games with an ankle problem but played 23 minutes and had four points and four rebounds while contributing tough defense in his team’s comeback.

You can see the complete game highlights and an interview with Mantas Kalnietis on FIBATV.Com.

Slovenia’s Jaka Lakovic: “We lost our concentration in the fourth quarter and Brazil came back but fortunately it did not cost us victory.

Brazil’s Anderson Varejao: “We came back from a 17-point deficit but were unable to get the win. Tomorrow is another day and we have to forget about this defeat. It’s just like it is in the NBA. It’s great to be back playing again for the first time in the tournament.

SLO - All business for father and son
02/09/2010

Slovenia vs Croatia . Day 3 of the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. 28 August 2010. Preliminary round

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - There are the Lorbek brothers, the Dragic brothers and the Udrih brothers.

Over the years, it hasn’t been uncommon to see brothers wearing the Slovenia shirt in the same team.

There are no brother combinations in this year's squad at the FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, but there is a father-son combo.

When Jure Zdovc stepped down as coach before the end of last year, Slovenia turned to veteran coach Memi Becirovic.

He is the father of long-time Slovenia international guard Sani Becirovic.

Sani, 29, had to take a break from national team duty last year to rest a long-standing knee injury but he's back and now hearing orders from his dad.

"It was uncomfortable at the beginning," he said.

"For a few days, I was nervous and I wasn't playing well.

"But once the other players saw us as just a coach and a player, everything was fine and it was no longer strange.

"I am just treated as the other players.

"I have played under him before and we know how to separate the personal from the professional."

The coach says it's all strictly professional in the team.

"During the practice, during the games, I see him as a player - not as a son," he said.

"If I need him, I call him into the game.

"Or if he plays bad and I take him out, there is no emotion.

"We are both professional."

While Sani has hit the heights as a player, including being drafted by the Denver Nuggets several years ago, Memi was different.

He did play the same positions, but never in the big time.

"I play one-two (guard/point guard) positions," he said.

"I was not such a top level player.

"At 21 years of age, I had an injury in my hip and I quit my playing career and started with my coaching career."

What may come as a surprise is that this summer marks the first time that Memi has coached his son at such a high level.

"For the last 12 years - I hadn't coached him," Memi said.

"I was just his father.

"Now we have the situation where we are together in the national team.

"For 12 years we didn't work together in a club or a national team so now it's a very interesting moment for both of us."

While Sani is happy to play for his father, the most important thing for him is that he is wearing a Slovenia shirt.

There is nothing quite like running onto the floor to represent your country, especially when you are one of the best-supported national teams in the world.

"It's great to be back," he said.

"We have a strong team.

"The players did such a great job last year at the EuroBasket.

"I was so proud of them.

"I wasn't able to play because I had to rest my knees but those that made it, took this national team to a new level by finishing fourth."

Both have helped Slovenia advance to the Eight-Finals at the FIBA World Championship as the second-place team in Group B.

SLO/IRI – Slovenia coast against never-say-die Iran
02/09/2010

Slovenia vs Iran Day 6 of the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey. 28 August 2010. Preliminary round

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Slovenia signed off in Group B at the FIBA World Championship with a 65-60 victory over Iran.

Iran, who won a lot of plaudits for their hardworking performance in a defeat to the United States on Wednesday, hit back from an early 19-6 deficit to knot the contest with Slovenia at 23-23 with 3:49 to go in the second quarter before going to half-time trailing only by five.

The first five minutes of the third quarter proved to be their undoing as Slovenia went on a 15-5 run to lead 43-28.

Slovenia coach Memi Becirovic, with an eye on the Eight-Finals, decided to use his reserves liberally and Iran took advantage.

Trailing 52-34 at the end of the third quarter, Iran outscored Slovenia 10-5 over the first five minutes of the final frame and continued to get closer.

They ended up losing by just five when Javad Davari hit a long three-pointer right before the buzzer.

Goran Dragic led Slovenia with 18 points and Miha Zupan contributed 15 while Hamed Ehadadi scored 15 and Arsalan Kazemi 13 for Iran.

You can see a the complete highlights of the game as well as an interview with Iran coach Veselin Matic at FIBTV.Com.

Quotes:

Slovenia captain Jaka Lakovic: “It was a very difficult game to play because we were under no pressure to win. We wanted to rotate the players, spread the minutes. I think we controlled the game, more or less. Now we’re going to face Australia. They are a very physical team and they have great players. It’s going to be a very difficult test for us in the Eight-Finals.”

Iran coach Veselin Matic: “We played the game to show we can play, to stay in the game. We knew they played a hard game yesterday and that was our chance. They started shooting the ball better in the second half. We have learned a lot from this World Championship. The Iran players have shown they are fighters. I’m really proud of my players.”

PREVIEW - Aussies, French battle fan-fuelled Slovenia, Turkey
05/09/2010

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - If Saturday night's Eight-Finals openers at the FIBA World Championship left everyone in Istanbul out of breath, imagine what Sunday's going to be like when the Slovenian and Turkish fans take over the Sinan Erdem Dome.

Slovenia's basketball players claimed four wins in five games in Group B and their 3,000 fans deserved much of the credit for giving them a home-court advantage every time out.

Even more have travelled to the city since and are looking for tickets ahead of the national side's showdown with Australia.

Turkey's supporters, meanwhile, will ensure their side is tough, if not unbeatable, on home soil against France in the nightcap.

The Slovenians' only defeat at the Abdi Ipekci came against Team USA, although Brazil nearly came all the back from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit before falling to Memi Becirovic's side.

Slovenia have had excellent play in their backcourt, which consists of captain Jaka Lakovic, Goran Dragic and Sani Becirovic, while 6ft 9in forward Bostjan Nachbar has put in the kind of all-round performances at both ends of the floor that could ultimately see him earn a place in the all-tournament team should his side keep winning.

Australia, who played Slovenia in the build-up to the 24-team tournament, played well in a very tough Group A that included Serbia, Argentina, Angola, Germany and Jordan.

Slovenia make their opponents work hard on defense and Australia's guards will especially be put the test.

"The only way we're going to do anything is by playing incredibly tough, hard defense," Australia coach Brett Brown said.

"We don't out-athletic people, we don't out-skill people, it's not like our plays are better than their plays. We just have to go back to very meat-and-potatoes, hard-nosed defense.

"That's where we have a chance."

Look for the rock-solid NBL (National Basketball League) men Damian Martin (Perth Wildcats) and Adam Gibson (Gold Coast Blaze) to have prominent roles as Australia try to disrupt Slovenia when they try to start their offense.

Australia are without big man Andrew Bogut this summer because of the injuries he picked up late in the NBA season with the Milwaukee Bucks but the Boomers still have an imposing frontcourt with Matt Nielsen, Aleks Maric and David Andersen.

Nielsen was the Eurocup MVP this season with Power Electronics Valencia while Maric made a stunning debut in the Euroleague with Partizan Belgrade.

Andersen, who completed his first year in the NBA, has been laid low in Turkey with a stomach bug.

"We've got some viruses flying around, we were lucky to get through all of it (in Group A) in retrospect," Brown said.

"We want healthy players and to go into that Slovenia game with some kind of freshness."

Nice first half. Hope it'll be a blowout. Placed a bet bet and need only them to win to win my bet.
Hell, I'm even supporting Dragic today.

A bit of bad play at the start of the 3rd, but we responded well.

Great game

lol, are you serious? I thought that we have a great game when both teams show up. Blow-outs are never great to watch.

I meant from us, I don't really care about Australia. And I'd rather watch our team blowing out opponents, then tight exciting games where we predictably choke at the end. I had enough of that watching our team in years past, i could use a break this year.

SLO/AUS – Slovenia walk into the Quarter Finals
05/09/2010

Australia Slovenia Day 9 of the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Istambul, Turkey. 4 september 2010 Eighth Final Round

ISTANBUL (FIBA World Championship) – Slovenia have barely raised a sweat in disposing of Australia 87-58 in the Eight Finals at the FIBA World Championship.

It was an ominous performance by the fourth placed team from last year’s Eurobasket, and they did it thanks to a full board of contributors highlighted by Jaka Lakovic, who had 11 first half points on his way to 19 for the game. Primoz Brezec (12 points) and Goran Dragic (10 points) led the rest.

Australia itself has been suffering a long period of drought and it carried onto the basketball court in the first quarter, Slovenia leading 12-0 after nearly seven minutes. While Australia made a brief 6-0 run through Matt Nielsen and Patrick Mills, the quarter time score was 16-8.

When Lakovic and Sani Becirovic started the second quarter with consecutive triples the margin was 14, but worse was to come for Australia. The Boomers shot just 6/27 and gave up 9 turnovers for the half, and when Lakovic capped a 10-3 run with a three-pointer leading into half time the score was 42-21.

The second half was a more even affair but the game had long been decided. Slovenia won the third quarter 29-24, and the final term 16-13.

It was Australia’s largest defeat at a FIBA World Championship against an opponent not named the USA or the USSR. For the Boomers only Mills, Nielsen and Joe Ingles made it into double figures.

Slovenia now face the winner of the Turkey v France game in the FIBA World Championship Quarter Finals.

Quotes:

Slovenia guard Goran Dragic: "It's a fantastic feeling to have made it to the Quarter-Finals of the competition. We have worked so hard to arrive here and I think we did a great job today. We came out very strong, executed well and kept our focus from start to finish."

Australia captain Matthew Nielsen: "Slovenia are very strong and they proved that today. They executed very well and our execution was terrible. Having said that, I don't think we are far off from Slovenia's level which might sound a ridiculous comment to make today. But we are without several players and we can play much better than this, we just didn't show it today."

This team is playing unbelivable right now; we have a good chance against either France or Turkey...

If we would make it to the semi-finals that would be absolutely crazy! (without Lorbek that is)

Australia can't catch up after slow start
By Chris Sheridan

ISTANBUL -- With 3 1/2 minutes remaining in the first quarter, Australia still had a goose egg on the scoreboard. That's right, a zero.

There are bad starts, and then there are really bad starts, and the latter doomed the Boomers to a long flight back Down Under as they were eliminated by Slovenia 87-58 Sunday in the round of 16 at the FIBA World Championship.

WHOOSH! Thank you Lord for another great victory. This is exactly what I prayed for! I am sorry that Turkey is in our group since we are going to stomp either them or France and I like Hedo. But if you do not want to be stomped, you should have stayed out of our way. Dajmo Slovenija. Victory is so totally ours.
