I see it as if Brazil is good enough to beat Argentina earlier in the knockout stage, then they're likely to make it all the way to the finals anyways. So IMO you should be saying "Fuck Brazil" always :lol

It's all about matchups, I don't think that Brazil has more talent than Argentina but lately they have our number, maybe if they face some other teams before they can get eliminated by one of them, then there's also the fact that I would rather lose later than sooner. Either way, once the game starts I know I won't be able to manage my desire of seeing a Brazil loss :lol

As Argies, our collective nuts always seem to shrivel up when we play Brazil, so if someone else can take care of that problem for us, then all the power to them. Ofcourse I always root for Brazil to lose.

brazil huntin' them boys down .. one counter with either robinho or maicon or bastos (did you see 2-3 times free cause the LB of CIV came to help in midfield) will spell serious trouble.

Let's see what civ gonna do about it at halftime regarding tactics. As I know sven goran he ain't gonna risk alot cause he knows a thin defense against a team like brasil is not a great idea.

Btw: hope me meet argies somewhere in the tournament, i'd love a knockout game between us.

This game basically went - Samba kicks ass, Ivory gets chippy with horrible spike first fouls like the one on Elano that should have been a card, Samba starts flailing around like they get shot (Fabiano!) every time they get touched, and Ivory does the same, Kaka goes full retard and gets a warranted yellow then bad yellow and gets sent off, Samba wins.

No way this was worsely officiated than US v Slovenia, the officials lost control of this one but didn't intentionally screw a team out of a victory. I'll take losing control of the match every time over screwing a team out of a win.

If FIFA really wants to curb the acting and pussy theatrics they'll start handing down video replay after the fact suspensions for that stuff, possible multiple games if it's bad enough. They won't do it, but it won't stop unless you just go short of issuing the soccer death penalty for it.

Rossi's penalty kick awarding acting job is another example that screwed NZ.

That's your opinion, mine is different. A ref with any experience at all knows you never call a borderline foul in that situation late in a tied game. This ref actually invented a foul that never occurred. It wasn't borderline, it was a pure fabrication, also in the face of at least 3 obvious slovenian fouls in the box. You'll never convince me that politics didn't creep in there. Never. It's over now and the US got a break with England sucking hard so a win still gets them through, but they would have had a strong hold on 1st in group if not for politics. Hopefully even as 2nd in group if they win they get Ghana and not Germany.

Politics?

I do. Think about it. Most South American team players play in Europe. Every qualifier game they're flying a lot and only get to stay 2 days with the team.
Plus the competition between the teams is monumental.

Now you give them two weeks to work, and you get solid teams.

How is it the US team's fault they were called for a phantom foul? You make no sense. Like I said, you can have your own opinion, but something that obviously fabricated screams a bit of bias. The US is nit presently liked much in many parts of the world, including many African nations, so is it that hard to believe a bit of bias against the US politics by an African ref didn't creep in? It certainly seems so when a goal is scored and the ref blows the whistle for an infraction yet nobody knows what the hell he called. He still hasn't explained what he saw, and he was sent home because of the call. That tells me there was bias, but you can believe what you want and the world won't be any different because of it.

the final score doesnt show the story of this game. ivory coast definitely lost, but brazil did not win convincingly. they had very few opportunities and had to slow the game down and waste time, they practically forced the game to stop on several occasions but didnt stop themselves when ivory coast had players down, and i think the ivory coast players realized they were getting played so they started hitting; brazil responded by magnifying everything, and finally the ivory coast player gave them their medicine back. I also agree with ElNono this is probably better for brazil than potentially losing him in the 2nd round.

I disagree. An American football player went around the globe playing sports that are wildly popular in other countries, and did quite well at almost any sport he played in, including rugby.

Most of the rugby players that saw him play said he was immensely strong and extremely tough in the matches, after he got the feel of the game. He DID say that there was no way he could keep up with the amount of alcohol the rugby players drink, but that was independent of the game itself. :lol

rugby ain't really about raw strength but about having the endurance to run a get beaten the shit out on every ball. VERY different from american football. It's like comparing boxing with taekwondo.

Boxing is a dogfight were strength is most of the times not the most important but viciousness, endurance, resilience, resistance to hits, ability to keep you ground(rugby going back and front) while taekwondo is about a fairly limited number of attacks in which you put max power/speed (american football "plays")

It don't matter if the player is strong as a bull if he can't play in a dogfight. Sure, some american football players would do well, but as a sport rugby is more tough and puts more stress on the body through continuous hits and running (try taking one in the belly now and one after running 5 miles .. quite the difference)

england problem is quite an easy one: they can't hold midfield for their lives. They don't have a real ball winner (like melo for brasil, yaya toure for ivc, mascherano arg, etc) that costs them ALOT if you watch the games... they try to obtain position and lose it because of the aforementioned lack, try again, try the third time .. they figure it's not working so back to the good ol' long ball.

It's even more painful tactics-wise than the lack of a creater.

It's not like the US has a monopoly on teams that are underperforming at this year's WC. Spain, Italy, France, and England have all fared equally as bad, if not worse

If you would have polled knowledgeable futbol fans on the chances of ALL FOUR of those countries to be in danger of elimination at this point in the tournament, you would have been laughed at. Yet here we are.

Sure, the U.S. could have done a lot better. But they could have been worse, too. I think many of the smaller nations are proving that they can hold their own this year.

Kaka's red was a good thing for Brazil, they're already qualified so they won't need him in the next game and he had already gotten a yellow in this game so the only thing that the second yellow did was cleaning up his first yellow so he can play card free in the second round (remember that in this WC the cards reset after the quarters).

Brazil benefits from the refs even when they get jobbed.

The US regularly curbstomps at the Olympics, we've overall got the best athletes in the world. It's pretty obvious that anybody in the US who would be good at rugby is playing football or basketball or baseball or even hockey instead.

It's not discrediting what other countries have done, it's just the truth. Americans don't give a shit about rugby. If they gave a shit, and the elite athletes that go to the NFL instead played rugby, the United States would be one of the best nations at rugby, if not the very best.

This was about incompetence, nothing more.

Whatever happened before the call doesn't matter, the fact is the game was on the line and this ref completely fabricated a call. He didn't see anything because there was nothing to see, it was a fabricated call. At least admit that.

After thinking about it, the only other scenario that is plausible for why this ref would completely fabricate the foul and make the call is because he felt like he made a bad call to award the free kick to Donovan in the first place, so he was going to fabricate the call and not let the US score as a "make up" call. So at worst he's a biased, corrupt official (just the official, not the whole tourney is tainted you drama queen), and at best he's as shitty as an NBA ref doing make up calls. Either way he's a shit ref.

I failed to see in that statement where he said the US would be good at EVERYTHING like you keep saying. All I saw was that he feels the US would dominate rugby. Rugby is hardly EVERYTHING.

Like I said his wasn't the only post of that nature. I wasn't only referring to his post.

I read, and didn't see where anyone said the US would be good at EVERYTHING. In fact, CH said that the US putting their best athletes to grow up playing futbol wouldn't mean they'd be the best. So where do you get that we think we'd be the best at everything?

Let me guess, if the US tried, they would be the #1 team at anything...

Have you noticed who's standing atop the podium at the Olympics every single year, in both the Winter and Summer games? We ARE the best at more competitions than anyone else in the world. Do you really think it's a coincidence that soccer really hasn't taken hold in this country yet and our team struggles to field talented players? Do you really not think you could take some athletes out of the NBA/NFL and potentially improve our team if those players had worked their whole lives building up towards soccer instead of using their talent to secure a D-I scholarship to a major school in their sport of choice?

You're telling me someone with the footspeed and coordination of Barry Sanders wouldn't have flourished on the soccer pitch? How about Don Beebe? Jerry Rice? How many NBA point guards would have had real potential in soccer?

It's speculative how much better the US would be. But it's not speculative to say that we WOULD have a better team, if players didn't mind making $200,000 a year instead of $5,000,000. Seriously, do you know how many dads in the USA hope their sons grow up to be pro soccer players? Not many at all.

Why is it so hard for Americans to accept that even if they "tried", they're just not good compared to others at any particular thing?

I guess being in the top 15 in the world at a sport counts as being "not good" at something. But if you can't see the way the US is developing the MLS more every year, well, you'll have a rough awakening in 10-12 years when the US consistently fields a team favored to make the top 8 or the semifinals in almost every World Cup.

tbh I'd pick a rugby team over a football team in a brawl ANY day of the week... QBs are pussies, most players are fat, and there's a lot that are just fast and low body fat, but definitly not massive. IMO it's not even a contenst, rugby players are crazy

That's ridiculous. NFL players specialize because it helps them at their position. Rugby is a much more free-flowing game where players have to have generalized skill. A QB doesn't need to be tough to play (although it helps) because he's not supposed to get hit a lot. Why waste hours in the gym to bench 400 pounds if it won't help you on the field?

Larry Allen is definitely overweight, but how many rugby players do you know that can bench 225 pounds 41 times? I'd venture to say that one or two of them, at the very most.

Fat? Yeah, he's chunky. But would you want to be pushing against him in a scrum? I'm fairly certain he would move a pile effectively.

Ray Lewis says, "hello." Yep. Lot of fat on that 6'1", 250 pound guy.

http://magazine.stack.com/Content/Site012/Articles/10_01_2009/DBLatRaisejpg_00000008402.jpg

Dwight Freeney. 6'1", 268. You see much fat on him? I don't.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fTT9xlgZ9CU/SRj_FkLvsNI/AAAAAAAAPJ0/0jNnUAfrqPE/s400/TonyGonzalez6.jpg

Tony Gonzalez. 6'5", 243.

I'm not attempting to take anything away from rugby players. But to just pass NFL linebackers and D-linemen off like they are nothing or that they would just get pushed around by rugby players is just absurd.

The same thing could be said to footballing nations. Do you really think, Brazil, Argentina, England, etc.. wouldn't be that dominant if basketball, Griderion was their main sport? A look into both sides of the discussion helps you know.

dude cmon seriously outside of america theres only a small following of nfl viewers, while rugby is a world game, not as wide as soccer

rugby viewers is not as big as the usa population who watches nfl, but its far more entertaining

i take both forms of rugby over nfl, at leasts you see guys throwing punches and shit without helmets and pads...

Jonah Lomu was 6ft 4in and weighted around 260lbs when he played. Stop talking out of your ass

Rugby players would win at Rugby and American football players would win at football. I watched both sports and think the rugby players are tougher. They take hard hits with less padding.

Man, that was a SICK hit--I remember seeing that one live.

too all the sons who nuthug nfl, one big hit means shit .. rugby means taking a shitload of hits in a match that in terms of effective play is much much longer. Take away the padding and the helmet (goodbye alot of crazy nfl hit using the helmet) and it's gladiator time.

Imagine 2 boxers: you train A 15 mins at max speed max strenght and then you put him to defend against max strength hits

you train B 5 x 15 mins at strong not max strength and speed and then you put him defend against strong not max strength but for 5 x times A had to defend.

Now tell me who is the better trained? Especially guys doing contact sport who know what I'm sayin here.
