ESPN has been turning into TMZ for awhile now.

I understand the WC is huge, soccer is gaining popularity, and that this was a far bigger feel-good story that everyone likes.....

but rape charges brought up against the greatest LB in the history of the most popular US sport is still a bigger sports story in the United States. That's just how it is.

This would be the same as the local news leading off with a report of the Mayor getting arrested, then the second story being about the local HS girls volleyball team winning state.

I mean, this was just the US getting into the knockout stage. Alot of people expected this to happen. They did it in dramatic fashion, it's a big deal, but tbh ESPn was just going with the bigger US sports story.

If they win the whole damn thing then it would be pitiful for ESPN to lead off with anything else.

good for you. I feel the same way. But the United States as a whole still cares more about the legal troubles of the greatest linebacker in the history of the far and away most popular sport in the country more than they do about the US soccer team getting into the knockout round.

Is Alergia also filing charges for getting raped?

MannyIsGod

LT is relevant?

You wanna know how relevant he is? When I read LT I thought of Ladanian Tomlienson and didn't even think of Taylor till Mono mentioned it was him.

Not really. Maybe in the NY area but I really doubt thats true.

I think it's absolutely true for the majority of the US. This is one of the legends of the NFL we're talking about. You can bitch about it all you want but NFL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> everything in the US. I wasn't one bit surprised to see LT leading on Sportscenter.

Honestly, it would have been a bigger story if the US hadn't advanced to the next round.

NFL is obviously the biggest sport in the US but that doesn't mean the majority of people care about a linebacker who played 25 years ago. LT isn't some gigantic mega star and far more people care about what is happening now than some old dude and rape charges.

No way for either of us to prove it, though. We'll see what they lead with tonight.

Do you even follow the WC? Honestly. US advancing wasn't "expected". They fought their way to qualifying first in the group. That's an accomplishment.

Top Story on news.google.com is not LT's rape, but Donovan's goal.

In the US the belief was that not advancing was a complete failure for this team.

I hope it will. But LT's story broke right around the time Sportscenter was about to start. There's no way they're not going to lead off with breaking news like that.

Yeah - actually I don't think there's anyway at all you can think that LT's rape is a bigger story than the US team right now.

They weren't underdogs either, just a pretty even battle against Slovenia, the fact that they did it first (over England) was the unexpected thing.

In the US the belief was that not advancing was a complete failure for this team.

Well given that their fate was tied with England's, not advancing was a very real possibility. Though I suppose if a team is going to succeed at this they obviously have to set their sights high.

Americans weren't crowding bars/restaurants or being allowed to leave work and/or have tv's and computers tuned into espn to hear about LT paying a 16 year old to sex him.

I will be honest, the last time I cared about soccer was during the last world cup and only after the US had won several games and there was a little buzz about it. The time I cared about it before that was in the winter season in the GRAYSA league in 1991.

The last time I read an article about soccer was one that bill simmons wrote last year, the time before that was an article in which I was mentioned as playing tenacious defense in a game back in 1988 in the randolph news paper.

I would, however, rather read and watch stories about this win than I would care about LT and his disgusting move.
