I wonder if we just got leapfrogged to get a guy stolen from us, or if this was just a salary dump by Miami.

The Miami Heat have traded the 18th pick in Thursday's NBA draft and guard Daequan Cook to Oklahoma City for the Thunder's 32nd pick, a league source tells ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

Cook, a backup at shooting guard, averaged five points and 15.4 minutes in 45 games last season.

The Heat are obviously looking to shed salary and the rumor has been that the Thunder were worried about losing out on Orton -- someone who's not a sexy pick but could very well be the Spurs' target at 20.

Good trade by both sides. Heat get more salary cap space and a valuable early second round pick. Thunder get a shooter and yet another first rounder.

I can't see the Thunder keeping all 3 1st's. There aren't a ton of guys to draft and stash(Vesely and Montejunas out of draft), and they don't have holes to fill in the rotation. I would guess they'll try to move up (18, 21 and 26 to get a Top/Top ish big man- Aldrich, Davis, Udoh etc. I doubt they could get Favors or Cousins.

Yep, which is what it was all about (and the salary dump).

So tune in, whoever Presti grabs at 18 is who we were going to pick. :pctoss

That's a rediculously good deal for the Thunder. It should be pretty clear that they are going big, so hopefully a good wing player falls to the Spurs at #20.

the spurs need bigs.

The Spurs have multiple needs and all of the bigs likely available at 20 (Orton, Alabi, Whiteside, Sanders) are considered projects. I'm not saying that the Spurs wouldn't benefit from a project big man, but if it meant that a more immediate contributor at the wing position were made available then I'm all for it.

I would love to see the spurs draft Devin Ebanks hopefully he will be around 20.

Shastafarian
06-23-2010, 07:10 PM
Sam Presti didn't do this because the Spurs draft at 20, he did this because he has a ton of cap space, could get a decent player and a mid first rounder. If the heat picked 21 Presti still would have done this.

It wasn't the reason for the trade, but you gotta believe Presti sees it as a cherry on top.

The Spurs are not a threat to Presti and the Thunder. When OKC's young players hit 25 the Spurs will be rebuilding and Duncan will be retired.

It's not about a threat as much as them having a similar appreciation for players and talent. They're not trying to acquire the pick for a head-to-head competitive advantage, it's about getting their hands on a player they'd like to have in their program -- one a team right in front of them probably feels the same way about.

The Spurs are absolutely a threat to the Thunder making the playoffs next year. Unless you think the West won't be as tight as it has been in the past few years.

I would have too a few months ago,but he is not as athletic as I thought he was when he was at WV and he would need about 2 years to make any kind of contribution on an nba team. There are better players the Spurs can get with the #20 pick than Ebanks.

Good moves, but he needs to move Jeff Green before his team can get serious..

I agree. I don't think they can't win a championship with him at the four. I see him as either a starting three or a sixth man who plays both spots off the bench, a la Odom. Obviously, with the Thunder, he can't be their starting three.

Also, he's going to want to be paid as a third star and I don't see him as being worth, say, 5 years and $40-50 million, which he'll likely command.

If I'm the Thunder, I offer Green and some combination of their picks to the Kings for the fifth pick. At five, they could take Cousins and potentially have their cornerstone big man that they're missing. Add him to Durant and Westbrook and talent-wise, at least, that's a big three that should be championship caliber.

We were about 20 million over the cap (i.e., no cap room to send to Miami).

Green would make a perfect sixth man. Absolutely perfect. I couldn't think of a more perfect fit for him.

HarlemHeat37
06-23-2010, 09:42 PM
Green didn't improve at all this year, he actually got worse..his efficiency went down, his points went down, his rebounding went down..I don't mind him as a 6th man, but he's a stretch four that can't shoot consistently and doesn't play enough defense..

I don't see his appeal..

Like TD said, he's going to ask for more money than what a 6th man should make, and I'm sure some stupid team will throw money at him..OKC's main flaw as a team is their presence in the paint..I like Ibaka, but they need a significant upgrade over Green..

Are you fuckin' kidding me?

The heat are getting robbed!! Why the fuck couldn't R.C pull the damn trigger for one time in his life outside his horrible trade for R.J??? 32 for 18 and Cook???

Spurs could have Cook and the 18th (Possibly Cousins due to his work ethic)...

Unbelievable..:depressed

Well, for starters, we don't have the cap space to do this deal. Also, our 2nd round pick is 49th, which is obviously much worse than Thunder's 32nd.

Oh and the 18th pick in this draft is just as useless as the 20th, which is why so many tems in that range, possibly Spurs too, want to get rid.

As a side note, Cook was the one player outside the lottery the Spurs had rated over Splitter in that draft. The Spurs would have taken Cook over Splitter.

I'm guessing Presti had at least some part of scouting Cook.

ChuckD
06-24-2010, 07:19 AM
I liked Cook coming out of school, but he really hasn't done much with his time in the NBA. His career 37 FG% is nauseating. OKC is deep at guard and doesn't need much scoring with Durant in the mix, so he could find himself on the street in a year or two.

What rules are you trying to talk about???

Are you crazy?

Thunder gave up the 32nd pick for the 18th and a Wesley Person clone in Dequan Cook. That is a steal.

If Spurs were to offer the 20th pick instead of the 32nd pick, the Spurs could have gotten another future 1st round pick out of the deal probably.

But no R.C wants to sit on his hands and go into hibernation mode like he did in the in the summer we traded Scola for a can of pinto beans.

You need to understand the rules, not me bud. :rolleyes

Just think Spurs could have Cousins (if he dropped to 18) and Cook and a 1st rounder all for the 20th pick!!

It's beyond stupid why we didn't even try.
