I'm gonna sound like a hypocrite, but I'm ok with most bball flops because usually they seem to involve more personal risk of injury, whereas soccer flops are mostly fantastic acting.
Exceptions going both ways, of course, but flopping is far more egregious in the beautiful game.

It's because the refs fall for it.
If the refs stopped falling for it, then it would be stopped. They could also give more cards for flopping, i have only seen a couple of cards given against players for flopping.

You used to get a yellow card for egregious flops. I don't know why they stopped cracking down on it.

Idk either--it looked promising for awhile. More people seem to be speaking up about it, though.

Soccer players get legitimately hurt enough that they should never do that shit. I'm surprised so many of those guys are willing to swallow their dignity and pretend to be hurt at no contact. Selling legitimate contact in basketball is one thing, but one of the Brazil players threw himself on the ground in the box trying to draw a penalty shot and gave up a good scoring opportunity in the process.

well it's a culture now. Hard to get rid of it. I hate it, especially when it really affects outcomes of games. They should crack down on it somehow. For example, they should suspend players for blatant flops that affect the outcome of games.

They still do, but I agree there is a lot of diving/schwalbes and a lot of those are 'unseen' by the refs

That one was bad, but other than that it was a lot of contact with the usual embellishing. Everyone embellishes contact constantly, but to me true flopping is Di Rossi style no one touches you and you go flying. Today was a ton of contact that was embellished. Xabi Alonso almost got his leg broken with a nasty spikes high challenge from behind and Chile were tackling late and from behind all first half.

I'm a strong proponent of harsh punishment for flops like Torres'. The other day, Veron flopped almost as bad and I was fucking livid. They need to start going through tape and suspending players that do it. I could understand maybe embellishing a little bit, but now its just outright unsportsmanlike bullshit. Cheating.

I don't know if anybody here has played soccer, but when your sprinting at speeds with the ball like track runners, any little contact towards your legs or body could really disrupt your momentum and send you flying away. Some of the fouls are legitimate, others are clear flops. Chile was playing dirty this game and looked like they were trying to injure Torres and Villa because they couldn't keep up with them.

Bullshit, the third angle of that replay shows clear distance between Torres and Estrada. He flopped like a fucking fish out of water.

The third most distant, most grainy angle show there is a clear distance? Pause the video at the 3rd second and tell me there is a clear distance between them.
Next you'll be telling me there was no handball in 86.

Yep, accidental hit causing a trip. Was a yellow/red too harsh? Yes. Was it a flop? Not this time.

Estrada's knee touches Torres ankle IMO, but I don't think that deserved a second yellow card and Torres shouldn't have stayed on the floor faking to be hurt.

There's still a ways to go, but the acting injured for me doesn't seem quite as bad as before. I remember during the 94 and 98 WCs at least 7 times a game the dudes would run out with the stretchers and carry someone off then two minutes later they were running back on to play. Now, a few times a game you see someone roll around then get back up, but everytime a stretcher has come to get a player he has been immediately subbed. To me this new way is 100X better than before.
Whisky Dog
06-26-2010, 09:07 AM
At first I thought Torres sold a textbook flop but after watching the video again it does appear it was an accidental trip. He still shouldn't have acted hurt on the ground, but with his knee injuries it's possible the spill scared him a bit too.
It's over now, I just want him getting closer to being right before this next game and coming with a great performance to out those dirty portugese.

What they need to do is do television reviews of flops at halftime and at the end of games. Any flops in the 1st half will automatically be assigned yellow cards when the players come out for the 2nd (even if it means a second yellow card and send-off for someone), any flops in the 2nd half will be retroactively yellow carded at the end of the game.
These Italian, Spanish and Portugese footballers don't need to work that hard to prove that they are cunts - everyone already knows.

Great, open the door for more corruption. Who is going to determine what's a flop?that's so subjective the idea of penalizing for it like that is just about the most retarded thing said here. Stop being such a butthurt pussy and live with it. Also, I noticed you didn't put Brazil or France on there, who flop just as mich or more than every team you listed. Surprisingly the only team that doesn't do it much is the USA, probably because it's not part of the culture here. All you anti floppers should be chhering the USA on more than anyone.
