Oh, and also:

...Brazil has dominated the series, winning 46 times, losing six and drawing 12. The Selecao have won both World Cup meetings, 4-1 in 1998 and 4-2 in 1962.

More recently, Brazil outscored Chile 7-2 in two wins in World Cup qualifying for this tournament. That proved to be the difference as Brazil topped the table with 34 points to Chile's 33...

I wonder how chile is going to approach this game shorthanded, they might come out on fire, we have to be careful to slow the tempo down to pace in the first 10 -12 minutes

Bielsa´s system has no margin for mistakes.
Chile would have to play a perfect game if they want to win.
And the team is far from perfect, as we´ve seen against Spain.

Brazil wins easy.

mb20 already nailed it, but I'll add-

chile is missing medel and ponce; medel has been their best player, and the only guy with a chance of stopping robinho, and ponce despite being crap his replacements are even crappier, so fabiano will also have a feast.

that said, this brazil team is easily the most accessible in years if not ever, and in their only matchup with these coaches chile was 2-2 with 20 minutes to go in brasil (brasil scored 2 on the counter attack for a 4-2 final score, IIRC)

so chile has about 10% chance of playing perfect, and another 10% chance of brasil laying an egg... brasil should win this easily.

Bielsa says the right things, his teams play the 'right way', but at the national level you need to know how to work out results. That's what Dunga does, and Maradona has been doing it too. Bielsa won't negotiate his ideas for a result, and ultimately that's costly.

elnono, i agree bielsa is too stubborn with his system, but I disagree that chileans should be pissed right now. in the 98 round of 16, the last time chile played in this instance, they also faced brazil and lost 4-1. It was also a much better team than the one that played today (zamorano + salas, plus several other good to decent players). that team played to counter and got trampled. this one got beat badly, but they did not get trampled. they got outsmarted by the more effective, more talented side.

most people only care for results. and they are important, of course. but it also is important to know how to get them. I've lived in chile on and off for 10+ years, and this is the only chilean team I've seen play something other than "hang from the cross bar and pray for a counter" footy. this morning, johan cruyff said chile was the team of the tournament precisely for its commitment to play an offensive style. I dont agree, but thats huge for people here. And more importantly, you can see in the players a difference- if you look at interviews from 98, you get "I hope / if we're lucky ... we can win". Now, you get "we're going to go out and win". I'd rather overconfident players than grounded ones any time.

in the end, regardless of how bielsa coached the team, brazil has more players and more talented players, and chile has the shortest team of the WC with only a handful of guys that almost play important roles in almost important teams. and on this day that they lost 3-0, they stood up to brazil equal to equal- if anything brazil was the one looking to counter. was it smart? probably not. but in the long run, its the only way they will get better.

diego
06-28-2010, 05:40 PM
further, :LMAO at brazilian /spanish people puffing their chests for beating chile. chile is a minnow next to you guys, not only do they have very few players, the ones they do have are not that great and on top of that extremely young. chile's best result in the Bielsa cycle was beating argentina at home, in Basile's last game with the team in utter turmoil. Even south korea beat more quality opponents in the run up to the WC than chile.

ElNono

I agree that given the talent available, you can probably say they overachieved this time around. That said, even if they're proud that their team advanced, only an insane person would have this Chile team try to play all-out against this Brazil. And ultimately this is exactly Bielsa's weakness.

most people only care for results. and they are important, of course. but it also is important to know how to get them. It didn't matter, did it? They still lost and they still are packing their shit and going home. 3-1, 4-1, 1-0, getting trampled, going all-out, it doesn't matter at all. It's like people bitching because Brazil wins without playing pretty. They have the hardware, and all those criticizing would sell their mothers to get their hands on that trophy.

You can keep the moral victories. I'm sure Brazil will let you have it.
They played equal to equal to Brazil, and lost 3-0. Let's celebrate!

The whole 'they will get better' is a bunch of baloney too. There's nothing Bielsa can do to stop Mark Gonzales from being a stiff. And ultimately, the love affair ends. See Argentina for how this movie ends.

Brazil found so much space on this game because of Bielsa's style of putting a lot of players in the attack and very few on the defense, plus this Brazil team goes against their history and plays mostly on the counter, so they're used to waiting in their own half and take advantage of the other team's mistakes. Brazil will do well against offensive teams like Chile but they're going to struggle against defensive teams (just look at their games against Portugal and North Korea). They're lucky to face another offensive team in Holland the next round, although I think the Dutch have enough talent to pull the upset.

Brazil is so overconfident right now I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing that happened in 2006 happens this WC. I have a huge amount of respect for Brazil's ability to win, but I really despise how cocky Brazilians get with each additional game they win. Here's to hoping the Dutch teach them some humility.

I'm not talking about the players, I'm talking about the fans. Have you read the Brazilian media? the comments on forums? Hell, all my Brazilian friends. Absolutely no humility. Someone is going to have to teach them then... hopefully :lol

further, :LMAO at brazilian /spanish people puffing their chests for beating chile. chile is a minnow next to you guys, not only do they have very few players, the ones they do have are not that great and on top of that extremely young. chile's best result in the Bielsa cycle was beating argentina at home, in Basile's last game with the team in utter turmoil. Even south korea beat more quality opponents in the run up to the WC than chile.

son, chile finished second in south america qualifiers ahead of argentina and uru who are both in quarters and on par with paraguay who got a good chance to qualify too. That should say something to you.

If you get smart and say "england waltzed its way etc" i'd like to point out that in south america all play all so it's no bully a lil country for 6 points fiesta.

@ "even south korea beat more quality opponents"
1) argie/para/uru/ecuador/columbia gettin to play two times with brasil in qualification group
2) spain/ swi in the world cup group, finishin with 6 pts.
so, son you feelin okay? you know whatchu talkin bout?

ah the subtleties of insinuation.... son we five time world champs, the lakers got nothin on us :lol .. seriously, football is our national mantra, what you say is unfortunate but normal.

btw I hope this brasil team ain't dumb enough to be like england and have their camp a press tour. I like how dunga is keeping them focused and that we have alot of good character players in the team.

son world cup is only a month in four years and i'm of direct bra descent .. give me a break, you don't get the kid in you at 33+ too often to come out and be 18 again so I might as well enjoy it as much as it lasts.

I live in chile SON, I know plenty about how chile qualified to the WC. the fact is that chile only came alive towards the end of the qualys and that their success had more to do with other south american teams not doing well- paraguay fell apart after the 1st half of qualys, argentina tried over 100 players and two coaches and never really played well, ecuador had injury/chemistry problems, and uruguay was the on one day off the next team they have been for most of the past 10 years.

if you can read- IN THE RUN UP TO THE WORLD CUP, that is right before the tournament (what is it worth to be undefeated 2 years prior?) South Korea played friendlies with more quality opponents: spain, ivory coast, japan, and ecuador and they beat all of them except spain.

in that same period, chile played trinidad and tobago, zambia, north ireland, israel, new zealand, and mexico- mexico beat them, they won the others.

lets see- T&T, zambia, north ireland, israel- not in the WC, wins
NZ- out in 1st round, no matches won, win
mexico- out in 2nd round, loss

south korea:
ecuador: not in the WC. win.
ivory coast: out in 1st round, 1 win, win
japan: 2nd round, win
spain: 2nd round, loss.

are you going to insist that in the run up to the WC chile beat better opponents, or are you going to STFU??

as for the WC group, chile beat honduras, easily the worst team of the tournament, 1-0, and they were lucky to have one of the better swiss players ejected 20 min into the game, otherwise they would have been lucky to tie. and even then, since when is switzerland a world power, or even a european one? they got 6pts and they should be proud, but south korea got 4 in a harder group, plain to see.

brasil beat a mediocre chile team that had its best offensive players out of rhythm (suazo, sanchez), and its best defenders suspended (medel, ponce), and you want to celebrate beating them... how the mighty have fallen

son if you'd live in europe like i do you'd know the swiss are a very decent side for quite some time. Furthermore, if you haven't observed, they played really well and proved that their only problem is a consistent offensive threat (proven vs honduras).

Furthermore, son since you live in chile you know they played more consistently and better than south korea at this tournament and we both know why friendlies are called friendlies.

Instead of offering bitchy explanations of why you fuckers got 33 pts you fail to point that indeed you got them. You got them ahead of argies who even coached by my grandma should finish ahead of you because of their talent, so that proves you got some talent, so you can't say it's all about form with chile.

Now son I know u mad cuz we whooped your azz but let's be sincere, you're a better side than south korea.
