16 Choices named for May Camp/Friendlies/First two WCQ.

No need to read to much into the omission of players who are still playing (Herc for example. Will probably be called up after Mexican finals. Jozy probably falls into this camp as well in addition to non-RSL domestic-based players as RSL is off this week so those guys were available. Gooch has Portugese Tournament, so he might miss)

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin)

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Jose Torres (Pachuca), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim)

Forwards: Clint Dempsey (Fulham)

Notable: Cap-ties for Joe Corona, Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams!

LOL... Terrance Boyd announced on Twitter he got called up... but then wasn't on the list.

And then the big news... Timmy Chandler told Jurgen he "needs a break" from the USMNT. Once again a summer chance to cap-tie him and it won't happen. Might be time to consider him German property.

Chandler is a big loss. He was an automatic starter for WC2014. He might not make it in the German squad but I just don't think his heart was with the USMNT. To that I say fuck off and fuck you for your bullshit quotes about how you want to represent the USMNT.

I'm interested to see what Corona can do with the full national team. How Kljestan keeps getting ignored is beyond me. He just doesn't fit in with Klinsmann's philosophy i guess. Gomez and co. should be called in when the other roster is released.

MannyIsGod
05-16-2012, 12:56 AM
Well if Boyd did indeed get called up and is on the next list (not sure why he wouldn't just be on this list though) then I think we'll see Gomez and Altidore round out the forwards. We'll see Landon get called in but Wondo gets the cold shoulder. I've got no problems with that even though Wondo is scoring goals at a crazy rate (and for that matter, so is Kenny Cooper).

I think our defense is going to be pretty weak. I guess I don't see a way around that. It sucks.

Here's your training camp roster:

UPDATED U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION
GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
DEFENDERS (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin), Oguchi Onyewu (Sporting Lisbon), Michael Parkhurst (Nordsjaelland)
MIDFIELDERS (9): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Jose Torres (Pachuca), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)
FORWARDS (7): Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Santos), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

Here is who I think will mon't make the cut to the 23, and who I think the "A" starting XI is (who I assume we'll see against Brazil and then the first Qualifier)

Not making the cut: Graham Zusi, Chris Wondolowski, Edgar Castillo, Juan Agudelo

"A" Squad Starting XI

4-1-4-1

-------------Howard-------------
--Dolo--Gooch--Boca--Fabian--
-----------Beckerman-----------
-------------Bradley-------------
-----Landon----------Torres-----
---------Dempsey----------------
------------------Jozy------------

We haven't seen anyone but Shea (who I think deservedly was snubbed this time) play LM, so it's kind of a guess there. Torres really showed a lot in that creating MF role under Jurgen before he got hurt and all indications would say he's back to form.

It might seem easy to put Edu or Jones over Beckerman as the holding DMF, but I think Kyle has performed just as well as those guys and appears to get some preference from Jurgen.

Manny, there really aren't that many Forwards when you consider he has Landon and Duece listed as Forwards, but we know they will play an Attacking MF role. Would have been nice to see Lichaj, but there are a lot of defenders there already, especially when you consider Johnson is likely to play LB and not MF. Would prefer never to see Edgar Castillo on my national team again, but he's actually played well of late.

Love seeing Herc make his was back to the nats! I see him as first option off the bench for scoring punch. Don't know what Sascha has to do to get Jurgen's attention though. Certainly he is playing at a higher level than Graham Zusi (who I like... but let's face it, he is a qualifier fill-in type guy, not likely a World Cup squad type guy. And supposedly Jurgen was going to call in his A team for this one).

Spurstro

Juan Agudelo, Alfredo Morales, Danny Williams and Graham Zusi were cut today.

scott
05-25-2012, 10:29 AM
Can't really argue with those cuts. Williams surprises me a little, but he has been a little raw to date. I guess Castillo makes it simply because we don't have a lot of depth at fullback. Hmmm... maybe if we would have called in Lichaj...

Spurstro
05-25-2012, 11:20 AM
Good article that discusses JK reasoning for keeping out Lichaj and others...http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/usa/story/versatile-squad-gives-jurgen-klinsmann-united-states-mens-national-team-new-options-052312

Apparently Williams is hurt, so he wouldn't be able to play anyways.

Morales is the raw one and did great for the U-23s before he got called back to his team. Lots of people were saying that they would have qualified for the Olympics if he was allowed to stay through qualifying.

When Torres starts the USMNT are 0-6-2. I think they'll break the goose egg. Bradley is clearly the best midfielder the US had. His penchant for scoring on the national stage is unreal. Love what I saw from Boyd. Too bad he didn't get a goal. Even though Cameron got an an own goal, I really love his passing from the back. Is klinsy favoring him over Gooch?

The chemistry looked great vs Scotland but let's see a tougher test. I'm sad to see Brek Shea wasn't called up, but then again his play has looked bad over the last couple of months. He's been too quick to make a 5-10 yard ground pass, instead of taking his time, and making the better pass or play down the field.

Seriously? I mean the penalty I can understand him being mad about... but the issue wasn't whether it his his hand or stomach or the area. He was INSIDE, and it did hit his arm, or am I wrong?! He could have said he didn't think it was intentional, and he might have been right.

As far as the 4th goal, that was legit..

Someone needs to tell him these things... before he goes on ranting like that. The score reflected the dominance IMO.. he's trying to make it seem like the US were competing, and that the refs were clearly favoring Brazil.

I would hate to hear this shit from any of my team's coaches.

I think the penalty, while a tough break, was fair, and the 4th goal was definitely onside (same player guilty on both plays - Oneywu - and he was also guilty of trying to pass off his marking on the Tiago Silva goal).

I think he's trust trying to stand up for his players so all the confidence we've gained in the previous 5 matches doesn't vanish with a drubbing to a world powerhouse. I've no problem with it.

I disagree that 4-1 is an appropriate score. Brazil was two goals better this match but did not dominate the way a 4-1 scoreline would indicate (Brazil's 2-0 win in New York in 2010 was much more the dominant performance, as was Mexico's 4-2 win in the Gold Cup Final).

In any event, US switched to the 4-4-2 too late but once they did they were creating a barrage of shots on goal. The debutant Brazilian GK had a hell of a match. Marcelo, however, was outstanding. Poor Brazil, how hard it must be having to choose between Marcelo and Dani Alves as your LBs :lol

MannyIsGod

Starting XI v Guatemala: Howard; Cherundolo, Goodson, Bocanegra, Johnson; Edu; Bradley, Jones; Donovan, Dempsey; Gómez.

Johnson starts, so the universe won't have to implode tonight. Bet Jurgen doesn't make the mistake of not calling up Lichaj again.

Prediction: 2-0 Yanks with goals from Herc and Junior

same.. you'd be surprised how tight the Mexico vs El Salvador game is right now. Mexico's balls have shriveled just like the Spurs in OKC. It's like they've never been the visitors :lol they are playing surprisingly bad, 0-0 at the half and I wouldn't be surprised if they lost this one.

loved Kinsy's sub for Cameron. He should be the permanent starter at the back with Bocanegra. Great distribution and solid D the rest of the way.

It's really sad US doesn't have a dynamic player in the middle who can orchestrate the offense. Torres would be decent if he his defense wasn't suspect. He can be a little turnover prone too.

Edu was terrible in the middle. I still don't know why Daniel Williams hasn't played there. That's his natural position and he's very good at it. Williams is injured so Edu will do....not really an upgrade with Beckerman.

All in all...decent result. Now on to the Raggae boyz

Agree 100% on Edu. Horrid match from him, and Williams would have been the perfect replacement.

I'm not sure Cameron is 100% ready for Prime Time, he still had a couple of shaky moments. In my mind, it's clear Goodson is our #1 CB next to Boca.

So pissed at Jozy for a completely lazy display last night. I thought he had shaken off that old Lazy OutTheDoor persona of the past, but tonight it showed up.

Donovan too passive.

Officiating just terrible. I'm not blaming it for the loss, I'm just saying it wasn't professional. Sounds the same way in the Mexico match.

I would have been happy about the draw going in, but today I'm not because of the way we went about it.

Looking at the replay of the Bradley pass again, I don't blame Jozy as much. He was trying to stay behind the ball because he would've been offside. I should've continued the run nonetheless though.

Again sucks we don't have an someone in the mold of Ozil, Sneijder or even Adam Maher who consistenly gets the Jozy the ball in places where he can finish

Is it even possible for Dallas FC to have had that many training sessions this season? And if they're counting the time he's missed with the U23s and injury then thats probably where the bulk of missed time came from.

Brek sounds frustrated and he's done some stupid shit but Dallas FC's front office sounds fucking stupid. Even if he has missed that many, why leak it to the media? Thats bush league as hell. Oh, you mean like trying to get the most money and the best situation for himself and his family? Fulham is looking out for their best interests, so I don't see why Clint shouldn't do the same. And it's not as if Clint is the only player in recent memory to GTFO of Fulham as soon as they could.

MannyIsGod
08-20-2012, 01:07 AM
I don't really think he's being selfish because I think Fullham is lying out their asses here. Liverpool admitted they wanted to bring him in and they HAD to have made an offer if Clint was saying it was a done deal. Fullham likely want too much but if Clint is willing to sit out then what leverage do they have?

As for what Clint did with NE, fuck NE. MLS is pretty fucking harsh on its players when they want to leave. Look at how Cameron's transfer nearly broke down. Soccer isn't like the NBA businesswise, IMO. I think players have a serious need to fight for themselves because no union is going to.

If Clint wasn't selfish when he tried getting out of NE he wouldn't be the player he is now. We can't want him to continue to progress to bigger clubs and be upset at him being selfish at the same time.

Jol went from calling the whole thing an embarrassment and saying it would likely be impossible for Dempsey to play for Fulham a few days ago to back peddling and getting upset at the supporters for calling Dempsey out during the game on Saturday. He even said Dempsey would be welcome back and hopefully play for Fulham again.

It's very odd that Dempsey and his people have had virtually no public comment (except for his tweets) concerning this matter.

Jol is fucking full of shit. Look, I've never been a Fullham fan and always been a Dempsey fan but they just seem to be hanging him out to dry and Jol is now back pedaling like crazy.

So Fulham should just sell Dempsey for peanuts? Bullshit. Yes, Dempsey has the right to want a better situation, but refusing to play does nothing but lower his value and piss Fulham off even more. It's not Fulham's fault that no Champions League club wants Clint and Liverpool doesn't want to pony up any cash.

Can't blame high profile clubs from not wanting him either. As Clint has gotten better, he's become a more selfish player. That works when you play for Fulham, but he wouldn't be a top player on a top-flight club, and none of them want to see selfish play from one of their role players.

Meanwhile, Michael Bradley put on his big boy pants a few years ago, realized he needed to be more of a team player, and now plays on a squad that may actually have a chance to compete for a Champs League spot.

Amazing how that works.

http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2012/08/dempsey-left-out-of-fulham-squad-for-saturdays-clash-with-manchester-united.html

The Clint Dempsey saga at Fulham continues.

The U.S. national team star will not play for the Cottagers in their upcoming showdown with Manchester United, having been left out of the squad for Saturday's showdown.

The transfer rumor mill has gone very quiet on Dempsey, with a long-rumored move to Liverpool looking less and less like a possibility by the day. In fact, Fulham has lodged a formal complaint against Liverpool for unsettling their leading scorer by publicly acknowledging interest in Dempsey without ever making a formal bid.

Fulham manager Martin Jol has spoken about wanting Dempsey to stay at Fulham, and has extended an olive branch in that regard, but with Dempsey clearly wanting to leave the club it looks as though the situation remains unresolved as we stand just a week before the close of the summer transfer window.

What do you think of this development? Starting to think Dempsey will stay at Fulham? Still holding out hope that a big club makes a bid for him? Where would you like to see him wind up?

I don't believe he's refusing to play. Liverpool has come out and stated they wanted Clint and then Fullham got pissed off they pretty much fucked up their lie.

Eventually its going to come out so I'll wait and see how it plays out but its in Fullham's best interests to move him.

I'd just like to see him play.

Although I haven't followed this closely, it always rankles with me when millionaire athletes do this shit

Clint may be in the right, or maybe not...What's wrong with kicking some ass with Fulham and setting yourself up for the next transfer window?

Now he's mos def sullied his rep in the eyes of other clubs...imo

Yet Liverpool has never submit a bid for Clint.

It's entirely possible that both Fulham and Clint are being colossal douches here.

Ben Smith of BBC said Liverpool inquired about Dempsey but the asking price was too high. It was also reported that Charlie Adams was going to be used in some sort of exchange but talks broke down.

Dempsey isn't the type of guy who would refuse to play but he has to take some blame. He probably told Jol that he's played his last game at Fulham and wants a move to a CL club. Then Jol got pissed off and mouthed off to the media -- throwing Dempsey under the bus.

It looks now that it's kind of a Dwight Howard - Orlando situation. It's best for both people to move on. The more time goes, the harder I think it will be for Demps to since with Liverpool. Don't rule out Arsenal. If he really wants CL football he might have to move to another country.

In other news, any idea when we get to see the Jamaica WCQ rosters?

I'm especially curious to see what Jurgen does in central defense. Cameron looked great against Mexico, and Edu also made a case for a move to the back with the Nats. Goodson has always been solid back there though, and we just can't shelf Capt. Boca.

Jozy off to a hot start, wonder if he'll start or if Jurgen will stick with Herc. I expect Herc, Jozy and Boyd to all be on the roster.

I think Castillo and Orozco have earned call-ups.

Hoping we can sweep this series which would set up a game against Antigua on 10/16 where we are likely through and can cap-tie some guys (Corona for example).

Apparently Mo Edu moving to Stoke. Good move for him. Curious where he'll play. Could be interesting to see him develop more chemistry with Cameron play either CB or CDM.

Arsenal needs a defensive midfielder after the departure of Song, not an attacking player

Certainly isn't what he was hoping for, but Sunderland did spend 27 million pounds in the market before Dempsey

At least they're trying to improve

Word is Boca has options in England and France, but will be departing Rangers within the next 24 hours.

9 days away from WCQ home-and-home vs. Jamaica. Still no roster.

Jurgen doesn't like to announce the roster until the players start arriving in camp....we're going to have to get used to that.

I could definitely see Dempsey not being called in because he hasn't played in forever. It'll make things more interesting if him and Bradley are both out.

Despite Bradley's knock, it would really surprise me to not see him called up (even if he doesn't make the gameday rosters)

Ives Galarcep ‏@SoccerByIves (https://twitter.com/SoccerByIves) IF final tally winds up Bradley/Roma, Dempsey/Spurs, Onyewu/Malaga, Edu+Cameron/Stoke, Bocanegra/Santander, that's a GREAT window 4 USMNT

I shall eat my crow with a side of Mac N' Cheese.

Hopefully Spurs can make a big push in Europe League this year and finish in a Champs League spot this year.

Don't think Clint will be an automatic starter, but maybe 1st off bench?

Yeah I'm not sure he's automatic at all. I don't know if Clint will do well in a super sub role.

I wish it would have gone differently, but I am glad he's at Spurs.

I doubt he's an automatic starter, but he'll get plenty of playing time to prove he deserves more minutes.

Will Clint be a regular for them?

Yes he will be. The Spurs sold Van Der Vart which opens up a starting role for Clint.

That role was supposed to go to Moutinho but when they deal fell through, they quickly picked up Clint to fill that spot. Clint should actually do extremely well in Tottenham, perfect situation for him.
