Ream was part of the Rosters that must be sent to FIFA 15 days in advance, and from that Jurgen calls in a roster and the rest of the guys are on stand-by. Ream is on stand-by. (This according to Jurgen)

And if you haven't heard yet, Gatt got injured about 10 minutes after the rosters came out and has had to withdraw.
Our midfield looks a little weak. Not having Bradley is a huge difference in our squad.

Curious to see if Dempsey starts here, and if he doesn't that means we're without our 3 top players (Bradley, Dempsey, Donovan - and yes I put them in that order not alphabetically but by how I rank them).

Its about god damn time Jurgen stopped trying to play him on the wing and just put him in the middle. Who doesn't want to see a Bradley Williams tandem after the way he played tonight?
I really think Zusi should be permenantly on this team. He gives them something they don't normally have out there and - IMO - he's MUCH better than Torres. I

The majority of the team didn't show up....especially Dempsey. Dempsey moved a little more centrally in the second half but he showed no life. The only good play he had was a nice lobbed pass to Gomez. Gomez proceeded to take an elephant touch. He had 2 in the game that could easily have been goals. Outside of Bradley, Zusi (more in the first half) and EJ, the team was absolute shit. The pitch was terrible but there's no way US has to win the 90th minute against a team full of players from the USL's last place team.
The bottomline is we got the 3 points and Klinsy is somewhat vindicated in his EJ selection. To put it all in perspective, US is 8-2-2 this year...more already than they had all of last year and the year before. The record includes historic wins over Italy and Mexico. Now we just have to get at least a tie against Guatemala and we're in the Hexagonal.
Hopefully we can get some players back....especially Fabian Johnson. Boca at left back at this point in his career won't cut it at the international level. He never goes forward and lacks the speed to keep up with pacy wingers.

Yo, yo. Don't forget that in Soviet Russia, football kicks you. We play the ruskies at Kuban Statium in Krasnador on 11/14. I assume Jurgen will go with a mostly Euro based line-up, wonder how much of a "A team" he'll put together (it is an official FIFA friendly window). No matter what the ups and downs this year have been, it would be impressive to have wins in Italy, Mexico and Russia in one year.
Also, CONCACAF Hex draw will be within the next 3 weeks. Hoping we get at home Mexico in February (Columbus baby!)

Rio Tinto could be in the cards for the Hex, I think that'd probably be the closest you are going to get, Manny.
It pisses me off that we have to go to Columbus to have a home field advantage against Mexico too, but most of my anger is directed at all the Mexican-Americans who choose to root for Mexico over their actual home country.

The record is severely misleading. There's no continuity in the team right now and Klinnsman is a really questionable tactician. We have some of our players playing the best they ever have (Clint,Bradley, and Jozy) and we have promising young Germans in the mix but at the same time the games have been ultra stagnent and Jurgen almost always manages to make questionable lineup decisions. Our defense is REALLY bad right now. All in all, I think the record masks a lot of the problems the US is experiencing right now.

Why is everyone in love with Klinsmann? Klinsmann was the worst mistake in Bayern's modern history.
Hummels :(
Hope that he brings a good assistant coach with him. Klinsmann should just stop being a manager, he's shit. He's a more of a motivator than a Manager. If he gets someone like Löw as assistan coach and he does nothing but motivate the players like in 2006, it's not a terrible decision, not a very good one either.

I didn't get to watch but it seems as though the US was really tired. If thats the case this is not the first time Jurgen has worked this team into the ground during practices only to have this happen. Dissapointed to hear that Omar sucked on that goal but I also read that Cameron was bad on that play too. I think this was a bad spot to start Omar but honestly Boca hasn't looked very good over the past year so I'm not any certain he would have been better. I too wish Landon would get back into the game but at the same time I think we should not lose this game without Landon.
Well, this is what we were afraid of so you can pretty much let the fan meltdown begin.

If thats the case this is not the first time Jurgen has worked this team into the ground during practices only to have this happen. You can't blame Jurgen on all the Euro-based players being gassed because they only joined up with the team recently and didn't go through the long January Camp. Lot of the players looked dead after 20 minutes and to me it seemed they were tired because of the long trip and the heat/humidity. With that said, I was disappointed that he didn't play Torres or Gomez...considering they have been playing club games in that weather.

23-man squad for Costa Rica and Mexico announced:
GK - Guzan, Howard, Rimando;
Defenders - Beasley, Besler, Brooks, Cameron, Castillo, Evans, Gonzalez, Orozco
Midfielders - Beckerman, Bedoya, Bradley, Diskerud, F. Johnson, Jones, Zusi
Forwards - Altidore, Dempsey, Donovan, Johannsson, E. Johnson
Here's the XI that I think should start based on current form & style of play:
-------------Guzan-------------
--Evans--Gonzo---Besler--Fabs--
-------------MB90---------------
--Zusi---LandiCakes---Dempsey--
-------Jozy----Johannsson-------
Here is what I think the starting XI probably will be:
-------------Howard-----------
--Evans--Gonzo--Besler--DMB--
--------J. Jones--MB90---------
---Zusi-----Dempsey----Fabs---
--------------Jozy--------------
Rationale:
Jurgen likes Dempsey as a withdrawn forward, but I think the squad is better optimized with Landon at CF and Dempsey at LM. As much as I like Fabs at LB, him playing LM does gives us a natural left-footer there rather than forcing Dempsey in there, since he likes to roam a lot. I like to see Deuce be more disciplined on the MNT rather than trying to be the star.
For Mexico, assuming we stay with our 4-2-3-1, I'd like to see Cameron in for Jones to give us an additional defensive presence against Gio's incuts.
I think Brooks is probably not far from starting, but he just got hurt this past weekend.

TBH, if Fabian is going to play LM, then I would start Zusi at RM and Lando at CAM/CF ahead of Dempsey right now. I've not been impressed with Duece's team play for the last year or so, while Donovan is what made the team go in the Gold Cup. He is playing more and more like a true #10, and that's what the team needs more than Dempsey roaming all over the field (that's what we have MB90 for).
Unfortunately the odds are not high that Jurgen doesn't start his recently named Captain.

MannyIsGod
09-07-2013, 01:22 AM
I thought they recovered but man without MB90 our midfield looked REALLY REALLY bad. I don't think Jermaine Jones never recovered but I do think Jeff Cameron looked better. Tonight really convinced me that JJ is made to look serviceable by Bradley but Cameron is the better of the two.
Fabien Johnson needs to move to LB. DMB was just destroyed back there tonight and didn't really get into the attack. I don't think he can be the WC solution and as much as I like FJ in the MF I think he's our best solution back there.
Jozy was just stupid. Not sure what happened to Beasler but he had a terrible night too. I thought Howard didn't play great either - was amazed he didn't come off his line on the final goal.
Whatever though. Mexico is a huge mess so we just need to take care of business on Tuesday and we'll be fine.
scott
09-07-2013, 07:58 AM
We were way too compact in the attack, with Fabian and Zusi both tucked way too far inside, forcing Orozco and DMB to both push forward to provide width, and they both got burned on the counter repeatedly. While I think Gonzo and Besler can both be long-term players at CB (with one of them eventually giving way to JAB), they both struggle with speed, and that's what CR brought right at us.
With Bradley out and Besler, Cameron and Jozy suspended, Mexico is looking like much more daunting match. They'll be riding an emotional high wanting to perform for their new coach.
In the long-run, I think this will put an end to Jurgen's tinkering at fullback, make him move Fabs to LB full-time and finally get on the ball with getting Chandler on the same page or Lichaj into camp.
I think this should be our lineup on Tuesday:
-------------Guzan--------------
--Parkhurst--Gonzo--JAB--Fabs--
------Beckerman--Jones---------
---Lando---------------Clint-----
----------EJ-----Iceman---------
Kind of a 4-4-2 empty bucket. I think this is the best defensive team we could put out (the exile of Maurice Edu hurting us now). Maybe put in Mix if Beckerman or Jones struggle. Bedoya is your supersub.

I'd go with the same formation we've had.
I think your backline is fine but no way Jurgen sits Howard, IMO.
I think its a mistake to start EJ. Definitely should still start Zusi. Probably still keep Landon up front and I'd go with Mix or Bedoya on the left. If they want to start AJ then put Landon on the left and keep Dempsey in the withdrawn location.
If Altidore hadn't gone full retard last night I would be saying we should sit Dempsey.

Problem with the same formation we've had (4-2-3-1) is that we don't really have anyone else capable of playing that hold-up, target forward role that Jozy plays. Dempsey in that role proved to not be successful last match. Johannsson isn't even that type of player, so I don't think it's as easy as putting him there and having Clint in the hole.
If we want to stay like that, I'd say something like this:
---------------Guzan-----------------
--Parkhurst--Gonzo--Goodson--Fabs---
------------Mix-----Jones-------------
---Zusi-------Lando-------Bedoya-----
--------------Clint--------------------
Tell Mix to do his best MB90 impression and hope Jones can stay disciplined for ones and stay in a destroyer/CDM role instead of his natural tendency to plow forward. Give Landon the freedom to play flat up top with Clint, so that we are basically a 4-1-3-2 on attack. I like Bedoya on the left flank, especially paired with Fabs, who can overlap with some discipline. The key will be for Parkhurst to stay at home, which is a little against his nature as he likes to overlap as well.
Yes, I know Jurgen is unlikely to bench Howard... but he needs to. For all the preaching he does about having competition at every position, I don't think Brad has been given a fair shot and has been the better GK for the last year both for Club and Country.
Mexico is going to be fired up on Tuesday. We need to withstand that initial 15-20 minute surge from them and then if we play our game we will be in good shape.

We actually took control of the ball 2nd half and dominated.
We shoved a bit to far up and got burned, but we were definitely theaggressors.
Klinsman is getting a lot from a pretty bottom of the barrel bunch imo.
Mexico will be very difficult with a new manager they want to impress, and without Bradley and Altidore.

Video of phantom foul that has Besler suspended against Mexico. Disgraceful from Costa Rica.

My final guess at what our line-up will be tonight. Not what I think it should be, but what I think it will be:

If Panama ties/beats Mexico in next qualifier, does the US let Panama win the last game to keep Mexico out? Maybe we play our U-14 girls team vs Panama?

The US needs Mexico to qualify. It's good for the sport as a whole in the U.S. if Mexico does good. It will also help our FIFA ranking, which I believe is used to determine the world cup draw.

We're not getting a 1st Pot Seed no matter what, so it doesn't matter. UEFA will be Pot 2, we'll be Pot 3 most likely.

Up to #13 in FIFA rankings. I believe in '10 these were the rankings the pots were based on, so that teams who already clinched and put out developmental squads in October weren't punished.
