Shaw Close To Accepting Cleveland Job

Jun 29, 2010 12:34 PM EST
Brian Shaw is close to accepting the head coaching job of the Cavaliers, according to his agent Jerome Stanley.

Shaw has been an assistant with the Lakers for several seasons.

RealGM Note: Brian Windhorst of The Plain Dealer reports that an agreement to bring Shaw aboard is "not close."

A source close to Byron Scott said discussions for him to take over the job have not moved forward.

Source: Brian Shaw Close to Deal to Become Cavaliers Coach (http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/06/29/source-brian-shaw-to-coach-cleveland-cavaliers/)

With or without LeBron James, Brian Shaw is looking like the next Cleveland Cavaliers coach.

A source told FanHouse the Lakers assistant is close to finalizing a deal to join the Cavaliers just one day before James' much-anticipated free agency begins. Shaw was a finalist with former New Orleans and New Jersey coach Byron Scott after Michigan State coach Tom Izzo declined the team's offer earlier this month.:cry :cry :cry

Scott has first refusal rights and Shaw knew it.

I would bet you that's what it is. I bet you Shaw knew Buss wanted Scott first if Phil left. Buss probably has more of an affinity for Scott.

"I would bet you that's what it is. I bet you Shaw knew Buss wanted Scott first if Phil left. Buss probably has more of an affinity for Scott."

There was a bond formed twixt '84 to '85 with the people involved. The Celtics had targeted Scott, (and Worthy) specifically because of their youth and propensity to wither under pressure in the prior years. Things were said, nothing was spared: "Scott tissue/tissue soft" was a mantra. Kupchak was also targeted because he was one of the initial large contract free agent signings who'd failed miserably to prove his worth.

Shaw is not part of that Laker's alumni.

or it means that shaw knows that PJ is coming back.

This means PJ is done...

This has nothing to do with Phil leaving or staying.

Shaw is not going to stay on as an assistant when he is being offered a head coaching job and head coaching money.

Shaw is not the one. I'm sure Kupchak has made that plain to him,,,,,kindly yes, but, simple & plain nonetheless.

The ideal situation would be for Shaw to indeed sign in Ohio, Phil returns, and Scott is named assistant coach with the stated public caveat that he's in waiting, like Knight did in Texas with his child, Pat.

or it means that shaw knows that PJ is coming back.
