View Full Version : Phoenix Suns offer Channing Frye 5 year $25,000,000 deal

Goran Dragic

Reported on the radio, I'll post a link when I see it.

So they're willing to max out their MLE with a 5 year deal on a one dimensional scrub who had one good contract year and was wildly inconsistent in the playoffs, but they're only willing to offer a perennial All star who put the team on his back after the all star break a 4 year deal. lol Sarver

PS - the best part of this is, Channing Frye knows it's on the table and hasn't agreed to it yet :lmao that stupid fuck should be on this deal like Tyson Chandler on Ghazi's wife.

HarlemHeat37
07-01-2010, 12:01 PM
Very sad for the Suns, but it was obvious that some team was going to pay him that much IMO..

Frye's wife is probably the one making him wait for a better deal, he seems like the whipped type..

Goran Dragic
07-01-2010, 12:06 PM
Maybe he's playing the wait and see game, ya know.

Maxed out MLE in the city he grew up in with the team he's had by far his best season with. He's not getting more than a maxed out MLE, this should be a no brainer move for him.

Maybe this is why Kerr resigned/left. He didn't want to re-sign that scrub to anything, but ownership wanted this guy for whatever reason.

Kerr left because he wanted Sarver to spend money on certain people inside the organization and Sarver didn't want to. Trust me, if a GM told Sarver someone/something wasn't worth the money, Sarver isn't about to take a different stance :lol

Not that I disagree with whether or not Frye is worthy of 5yr/$25M, but that is actually considerably less than a max MLE contract over 5 years (which would be closer to $34M).

So can most people who hoop at the U of A rec center. You don't give someone a 5 year deal just because he can make open shots and do nothing else.

JMarkJohns

5 year, 25 million isn't the MAXED MLE, is it? It shouldn't be. I think Gooden's is closer to the MAXED MLE. Either way, it's definitely too much, Amare or no Amare. Why wrap up this much money in a player that isn't going to help you win in the playoffs?

This is the first of many times where not keeping Steve Kerr really bites the team in the ass. Even from the get go when he was hired and made other mistakes, he never made the mistake so many GMs make by overreacting to 1 good year from a role player with a 5 year 25-30mil MLE contract. 9 out of 10 times, these deals come back to hurt teams well before the contract runs out. When the Lakers can get Ron Artest for the MLE that's a rare occurence, they're also the team that really regrets the MLE level deals they gave Sasha Vujacic, Vladimir Radmonovic, and Luke Walton.

This is just stupidity fodder from me, but say Amare does leave. It wouldn't open up a max contract slot, but I believe it would have given the Suns about $12-13 million in cap space. They could have gone after Dirk hoping he'd take less to join his little buddy in Phoenix. If Frye accepts, I believe the Suns won't have much money to throw at any quality players, maybe $5-6 million, which is basically MLE money.

You're thinking like a GM. This is not a contract given out by someone thinking like a GM. Currently Gentry and Sarver are basically acting as co-GM's, and Sarver isn't about to get in Gentry's way with a decision Gentry makes. This is a coach giving a contract to a player he has fallen in love with while having no GM to weigh the salary cap implications down the road or to have an unbiased opinion on the best long term interests of the team. Fortunately it's less money, but it's just like D'antoni falling in love with the foreign fucks (Diaw and Barbosa) after 1 career season and giving them both contracts ridiculous because he loves foreigners.

It's gonna end up working for him. He knows the guy on the other end negotiating is a coach who wants him back and has no experience as a GM. He's reaming a team that has no GM right now, is it ethical? No, but it's business.

Robert Sarver basically forfeits any power in CBA negotiations a year from now if he gives this contract out. In February he had a radical proposal of 5 years 60,000,000 being the max contract, how the hell does he expect people to take that seriously when he's considering shelling out 30,000,000 for Channing fuckin Frye?

God forbid the Suns be a well run team that locks Amare up before he visits Miami and New York, says thanks but no thanks to Frye, and now can focus on using their MLE to fill in holes and trading Brickbosa. Amare handed them the ability to lock him up early without adding a final year so they would be able to focus on addressing weaknesses in free agency, of course Sarver decided to throw that opportunity away so a team that currently doesn't have a GM would have its hands full when free agency starts.

Instead Sarver and Gentry just wasted a bunch of time trying to get Amare to take a 4 year deal he was never gonna agree to while ignoring a bunch of other stuff that coulda been addressed. Did Sarver ever consider it might have been smart to hire a GM before free agency started? Did either Sarver or Gentry consider maybe finding a suitor for Barbosa on draft night? It's like a bunch of fuckin 5th graders with ADD run the Suns.

Funny thing is that's gonna cost him money in the long run (unfortunately thinking long run isn't Sarver's thing). Yeah, you're not gonna immediately see the benefit of satisfying a GM's needs who he can cut costs while improving the team like Kerr did. In two years Sarver is gonna regret it when he has Channing Frye's bloated contract on his roster and the coach that pushed for that contract is gone.
