If you look at the qualification spots though, South America did great overall.
That said, this could very well be the very first World Cup where an Euro teams wins it all outside of Europe.

what kind of excuse is that? Only 5-6 teams can win in the begining of each WC .The numbers of teams allowed per continent won't change that.

Uruguay advanced further than those two. Can they win it all? It's a long shot, but don't forget that Uruguay had to go through some bullshit playoff to get to the cup in the first place.

Well, Uruguay is in the semis right now, who says they can't go all the way? In 90 minutes of football anything can happen. Look at Paraguay vs Spain, most people would say that Spain >>>>> Paraguay and yet they were 5 minutes away of going to penalty kicks ('cause in E.T. the score rarely changes), and if Paraguay wouldn't have missed its oportuinity of going in front with that penalty, things could have been a lot different. What if Spain-Switzerland would have been a knock out match instead of a group one? Everybody would been making fun of Spain right now. Things are incredible even in football right now, taking this into consideration having the most participants in a tournament helps a lot the chances of getting a champion of your continent.
One thing is for sure, Europe wouldn't be the continent that puts more teams in the latter stages of tournaments if they were able to put only one third of the participants that other continent puts.

look at my posts, I create this thread to respond to a previous lol Europe thread and I'm just pointing out the fact that Europe continent have 9 trophies and South America have also 9, if logic is respected after this WC Europe will take the lead thats all and in 2014 it would be a new tie.
I never say Europe is better than the rest of the world, so far for the football it's a tie between the two continents.

But the qualification seats are nowhere near being equally distributed, and that's also what's being pointed out. Would the titles be equally distributed if both America and Europe would have the same number of seats on every cup?
We don't know and there's no way to know. But it's also undeniable that more Euro teams had a shot at a WC than American teams ever will.

I don't think it would be fair to give the same amount of places to Europe and South America, for the simple fact that there are a lot more Europeans than South Americans in the world, so it's understandable that Europe has more places. What I do think it's that the difference shouldn't be so big.

And I agree, I was just pointing out that even though it looks like an even affair, when you look at the actual chances of teams from both continents to participate, it's nowhere near even.
I already stated that personally I find it harder to stomach that African teams get as many seats as they do. Sure, they also have more teams and federations than South America, but I don't think they're anywhere near as competitive.

I disagree with that.
All in all there are 5 big nations: Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Italy and Germany.
Nevertheless we cannot say England and France don't deserve their titles (England is always there with strong teams and France is inconsistent as hell but had 2 exceptional generations 80's with Platini for 2 semi-finals and 00's with Zidane with one cup and one final), meanwhile Netherlands, Spain are strong candidate to get one cup someday, we can make a case about Portugal.
I don't see in South America 6 contenders like in Europe. Adding more America's teams won't change that, Mexico, Paraguay, Colombia, Chile... participated regularly to the WC but has never succeeded in being a real contender (maybe the Valderama generation)

When you have teams like Mexico beating France, or Slovakia eliminating Italy. Heck, even Slovenia beating the now trumpeted German team or Swiss beating Spain, you can't say that smaller teams have no impact whatsoever on the competition. They affect all sort of things, like seeding, even suspensions through yellow/red cards. I agree that there are certain, generally speaking, 'dominant' teams out there. But some smaller teams sometimes rise above too. Look at Croatia back in the Davor Suker days, or even this Uruguay team who still has a shot to win it all, and was incredibly close not to make it in the competition at all. Paraguay was either 1 penalty kick or 15 minutes from getting rid of Spain, who almost always makes the competition but it's the first time it reaches the top 4.
To me, it just can't be static. You really have to figure out a way to have truly the best of the best out there.

The only way to secure the best team to win every WC is to play all vs all, no knock out stage, kinda like most countries leagues or like the South American qualification, with the knock out stage the best team can go home if they have a bad performance (or bad luck) in a given game. Of course this will never happen 'cause is very hard to organize and it takes out the excitment of a playoff game.

That's not what I'm talking about though. What I mean is that if a team like Ecuador right now is demonstrably better than a team like Algeria, then they should be part of the competition. Right now that doesn't really happen because of how the qualifying seats are distributed.

I agree to an extent. In fact and by the way the real debate is not about the number of teams of Europe and South America, the debate is more why a team like Australia is present all the time when we know that a lot of non qualified euro or south american teams are much better, same goes for Africa and Asia. Nevertheless for football development it is important to have all parts of the world represented. I think the actual system is the best for the WC even if of course it can be improved, number of seats can be reviewed, we could imagine decreasing the quota of seats and organize a pre tournament...

If you really want to compare cups won by southamerica or europe you should take into account if the cup was won in a 16, 24 or 32 team worldcup.
Nothing against Uruguay, but winning in the 50s comparing with a cup win in the 90s and later....

You could talk me into that. A pre-WC tournament that distributes, say, 4 seats for those teams that squeaked out or lame regions/federations. I just despise the current Nazi regime of Blatter giving a thumbs up or down. Ultimately, we're here because Sepp wants the votes from Oceania and Africa. It's way more for political reasons than actual competitive reasons.

It's really not that different. European teams won in Europe, South American teams won outside of Europe. We've been in that back and forth since the 30's, but Brazil being the only one breaking the mold just once, and Europe having a great chance to break the mold in this cup.

4 to 6 seats could be a fair number for this pre-WC with let's say from 12 to 18 teams. The big problem for that is the lack of calendar space, it would be a nightmare to organize it
