Not as surprising as if it were a recent NBA player.

His last season was 1986-87. In that year, guys like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were making around $2-3 million a year. And those were superstars in the league. George Gervin made $800,000 in 1985-86. There's a chance a guy like him made only a couple million in his career. Probably had decent amount of money during his playing days at the time. But it wasn't ridiculous money NBA players make these days that set them for life and even for several generations of their family after them.

not ridiculous money, sure, because we all make $800,000+ a yr. it adds up to bad spending and no financial know-how.

No pension plan?

the only plan he had was probably drugs, partying, and spending wads of dough he eventual would lose in the end anyhow.

The article didn't mention anything like that. In fact, it said there was no obvious history of drug, gambling or alcohol abuse or any single event that could've contributed to him being broke and homeless. Damn shame.

I don't understand how you can go broke even if you spend just one year in the NBA. Save that shit up and get a regular job.

I have no sympathy for homeless people, TBH..barring an extremely crazy situation, you would have to be a complete idiot and failure to be homeless IMO..
