Roger Mason Jr., one of the free agent steals of two summers ago, could be closing in on a new deal by the end of the week, league sources told NBA.com. Mason spent the last two seasons in San Antonio.

“We’re going through it day by day,” Mason’s agent Mark Bartelstein said Tuesday. “We have to go through the process. There’s a domino factor to all of this.”

Bartelstein added that a number of teams are interested in the shooting guard who enjoyed a career season in 2008-09 before Mason struggled with his shot last season and fell out of Gregg Popovich‘s rotation. Portland, Miami, Chicago and New York are among those who have contacted the six-year veteran. The Spurs have not.

The “domino factor” Bartelstein referred gets back to those top-tier free agents — LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, etc. Once they decide where they’re going, roster and salary slots open up. With the Heat, Bulls and Knicks, especially, Mason is could be seen as cost-effective proven vet to complement a few new high-dollar teammates.

Mason is looking for a chance to contribute again. He played a major role with the Spurs in 2008-09, setting career highs for scoring (11.8), minutes (30.4), 3-point field-goal percentage (42.1) and starts (71). Mason took a step back last season, mainly due to injuries and inconsistency plus the return of Manu Ginobili.

“It started with me in the playoffs last year,” Mason said shortly after this past season ended. “That was the first time I had gotten benched by Pop. It’s kinda lasted a while.

“It hasn’t been ideal, but I think I’ve continued to improve as a player, which is weird because most times if you numbers look the way mine do from one year to the next, you think that you’re a worse player. But I actually feel like I’m a better player.”

Mason feels he can be the long-range threat he was that first year in San Antonio again, and a more complete player. He shot just 33.3 percent from beyond the arc last season and averaged 6.3 points.
Still, the Spurs two-year investment of $7.3 million appears to have paid off after Mason out-played his deal the first year. Mason, 29, is looking for another multi-year deal.

On the eve of free agency last week, Mason tweeted (MoneyMase) the following:
“How quickly people forget that I was considered the steal of free agency last year. A talented team, and injuries, got in the way this year.”

I don't hate RMJ like some around here. I had no problem with "the asking for a trade" and although he sucked badly, he seems like a very, very good guy.

Depends on the team. If it's a contender I don't like, feel free to choke in the playoffs.

I'm glad to see Mason go, but also realsitic about the fact that the Spurs really need some 3 pt. shooting. Compared to a few years ago, where is the 3 pt shooting going to come from?

Sure would be nice if some team under the cap got interested in Mason and let the Spurs S&T him there. Having a TE that's somewhere between the BAE and MLE could be a big help in rounding out this year's roster.

The mentioned teams are Portland, Miami, New York, and Chicago. That's three out of four, so our chances aren't too bad.

However, I think we only have early bird rather than full bird rights, so I'm not sure if we have give him 10.5% increases from year to year.

I don't think the Spurs have Mason's rights. He has only been here for 2 years. To get bird rights, he needs to have signed a 3 year contract.

EARLY BIRD EXCEPTION -- This is a weaker form of the Larry Bird exception, and is also a component of the Veteran Free Agent exception. Players who qualify for this exception are called "Early Qualifying Veteran Free Agents" in the CBA. A player qualifies for this exception essentially after playing two seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent (see question number 25 for details). Using this exception, a team may re-sign its own free agent for 175% of his salary the previous season or the average player salary, whichever is greater (see question number 24 for the definition of "average salary." Also note that for 2005-06 they used a defined figure of $5 million). Early Bird contracts must be for at least two seasons (which limits this exception's usefulness -- it's often better to take a lower salary for one more season and then have the full Bird exception available the next season) and no longer than five seasons. A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract using this exception.

Thanks.

So they can sign-and-trade him to a contract north of the MLE if they wish and can offer 10.5% raises. For a guy like Mason, this is as good as full bird rights.

IMO Mase will have a bounce back year and we will wish we had signed him. I firmly believe his injury had more to do with his shot issues than anything else. Fully healed and in the proper role which I believe he would have had this year he could be a player as the 5th wing player.

Mase will go to a team with a higher tolerance for his shortcomings and his mistakes. He's also more likely to either start or be the first off the bench at his position. His shooting is almost certainly going to imporove with someone else, but unless something goes horribly wrong at the 2 position, nobody will be wishing the Spurs had signed him.

With Bosh and Wade going to Miami, I think Mason will end up there.

If Mason can find his shot again next season he could really open the floor up for Bosh and Wade.

Plus, it was reported last time it came down to Miami and San Antonio 2 years ago, so it's likely that Mason goes to Miami...imo.

Good luck Roger. :toast

Get lower on defense and don't play with messed up hands...apparently it affects a shooters touch! Who knew?! :p:

175% of Mason's salary from last season is $6,615,000. The Spurs can sign and trade him for any amount up to that, and nobody is going to pay him that much anyway. Therefore, the early Bird rights will suffice.

I agree with coyotes_geek, hopefully he wants to go to the Clippers, Heat, or another team with cap space that will let us sign-and-trade him there, giving (hopefully) a big enough TE to get someone we otherwise couldn't have.
