Air Alamo is running a series of polls to have their readers pick the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd All-time, All-Spurs teams. Right now they are working on picking point guards. Looks like Tony's in the lead with Avery in second and Johnny Moore and James Silas battling for third.

Here's the link if you want to vote:

http://airalamo.com/2010/07/03/all-time-all-spurs-team-point-guards/

oh, and they stupidly left Mike Gale off of the list, so take this poll for what it's worth

I get that AJ was on a championship team, but James Silas was really good.

Silas is currently running third behind Avery. He's in a tight race with Moore though.

front court is set - robinson/duncan/gervin

IIRC, these are the only spurs who made the top 100 in bill simmons book. maybe robertson or silas were there, but not sure. they were definitely the top 3 spurs.

manu is prob. my sg

point guard - maybe tony, but not so sure, since i have not seen the early spurs point guards, and none of them made a big name for themselves so that younger generations can go - yeah, that guy def. played for the spurs.

You have to have Parker and Johnson on there, cause they brought us rings. It was tough to choose between Moore and Silas. However, I decided to go look up the numbers just now. While a few moments ago I would have picked Silas, the numbers give the edge to Moore. Not only did he score in double figures for most of the 80s, he also doubled and even tripled the assist totals of James Silas on a year by year basis. So Moore is one of the 3 PGs on my team

I know Kenon was a PF, but he can be our 3rd team Center. Also, I picked Horry over Rodman, cause of results. Rodman was a great rebounder and defender, but he didn't deliver the OBrien. Horry delivered the OBrien. In fact, if not for Horry's heroics in game 5 in 05, the Pistons most likely win that Championship.

If you want to go super defensive.....Robinson, Duncan, Bowen, Elliott, Robertson. I dare teams to score on us.....

If you want to go super offensive....Robinson, Cummings, Mitchell, Gervin, Parker.....I dare teams to shut us down.....

Hard to say. His effectiveness going to the rim was definitely hampered, but he was a pretty good shooter, not a lot of range, but decent. He didn't have a lot of really healthy years, but he was pretty damn good in his prime.

If he was healthy, I would put him over Mitchell easily. However, it was hard to leave Kenon and Mitchell off my list.

But when you get into All-Time or All-NBA it's not about setting up the lineup to play a game, it's about putting the 5 best players on the board -- chemistry or usage plays no part.

The All-Time, All-Spurs First-Team should be:

C - Robinson

PF - Duncan

SF - Gervin

SG - Ginobili

PG - Parker

Gervin was not a SF

Gervin played the 3 with the Squires and then with the Spurs. Bass moved him to the 2 because Silas was hurt one year and they had no guards. He still used to go down to the baseline anyway.

Starting 5 should be Tony Manu Ice Tim and Robinson.

Honestly with this lineup, I would move Parker to the bench and start Moore. Moore would be a better choice to feed Gervin, Robinson, Duncan, and Elliott.

Parker is more of a scorer than Moore and would do better off the bench. Parker has great chemistry with Manu and Bruce. Also, Gilmore and Bruce are not really there for offense. So Parker makes more sense with the second unit, as he, Manu, and Cummings can unleash hell on opposing defenses.

Actually, if you switch Bruce and Sean, each team has 4 legit scoring options.....as well as solid defense inside and out.

Silas, Gervin, Horry, Duncan and Robinson (with Manu as Sixth Man). Now THAT is a team-oriented starting five. Reminds me of the '69-'70 Knicks.

It's not technically a vote for the best of all time. We asked people to vote for the best players (plural) at each position. In the original post we intimated that we would be using the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd all-team selections. People can vote for as many players as they want. That being said, he's not even top 5.

focusing on "best player available" with the first 2 of each position and the last one for a deserving roleplayer (if you want to call them so)! Leaving Larry out to put Rodman in (at center) was the hardest, but it suited my intention pretty well with Rodman, Bowen, Robertson beeing defensive aces, Horry beeing the clutch stretch4 and AJ the savest ballhandler.

This starting lineup would match any others' all-time teams. I offer this IF you can only play them at the positions they played in their time. Example, can't play Wilt, Shaq and Jabbar. Only one!!
IMO only the Celts and Lakers cound compete with the Spurs top 5. What made MJ so great is that he didn't really play with any other memorable players [Pippen].

Shocks me on some of the reasoning for picks. Daiv, Tim and Gervin all easy first team picks. Why some say you have to have parker because of championships is beyond me. If thats the case, shouldnt will perdue, nazi and kersey all be up there too?? Of course not. There are good players on so so teams and bad teams. were looking for best players not best teams of all time

MY picks and reasons.

PG- Johnny Moore -There is a reason why his number was retired. The guy rocked. while Parker is a good player, Moore was the best at this position for the spurs.

SG- George Gervin- No brainer,,,and no he was not a Small foward.

SF- Mike Mitchell- People are in love with Sean and I like him too, but Mike Mitchell was the man. Guessing he wont get many votes because so few of you know him well.

PF- Tim Duncan- No Brainer

C- David Robinson- No Brainer

2nd TEAM

PG- Rod Strickland- While a jerk as a person, the guy could play some ball in his prime.(only 2 seasons in SA) Had to really think between him and Moore for first string.

SG- Manu- Manu is so recent, just hard to go against him. If the times were changed and Alvin Robinson played now and Manu back then, I wonder how it would change outlook?

SF- Sean E- After Mike Mitchell, alot of decent players, but the next best is easily Sean.

Pf- Terry Cummings- Amazing how so few know about this guy. This guy Was solid al around and for long time.

C- Artis Gilmore- the A train was a monster in his Day. I still dont think he gets the credit he deserves.

3rd team.-

PG-Tony Parker - Score score score

SG- Alvin Robinson- D D D D and he basically was the whole team at one point.

SF- Mark Olberding- out of the rest at this position, he all that stood out, and im not even sure if it was SF or PF he played

PF- Swen Nater-Did u know he led the ABA in FG % and rebounding in 1975??

C-- Frank Brickowski- Solid as they come. Can u think of a beter 3rd team?

I took out one way players like Bruce Bowen, Horry and Rodman.

Johnny Dawkins and James Silas was also consideered. Solid guys.

On another note. Look at this roster for 1990-91 Spurs. Its pretty impressive

PG- rod Strickland
SG- Willie anderson
SF- Sean Etliot
PW- Terry Cummings
C- David Robinson

Bench
sidney Green

I had to put Jackson on my team because of his talent, he's fearless, a good defender and not afraid to take the big shot.

Hill got the nod over Avery. Avery won a ring but it looks like Hill is and will be the more talented and hopefully successful (In a Spurs uniform that is) of the two.
