Well, it's a matter of what you're paying. Haywood is going to get an insane contract in this market. Anybody want to take any guesses as to what he signs for? Especially after the big names go off the board and teams are scrambling to salvage that cap space they created?

I'm guessing 5/55.

Great point unless Yao or Oden stay healthy there are not many other big men available ...

Mavs still have Dirk, Haywood , Roddy and Caron along with the aging but still serviceable marion, Kidd and JET ...

Not a title team but that is 55 wins easy ...

I know it isn't an apples to apples comparison, but Gooden produces reliably. He is a LOT like Corliss Williamson. Haywood has shown some good things in Dallas... But I question his health...

Yeah, because 2 years off didn't spare him the wear and tear of the NBA season and didn't allow him to recover for those next 3 titles...

Jordan would have broken down years sooner had he stayed straight though...

07-08-2010, 02:18 PM
As someone else said, for a guy his size and with his numbers 10/10/2 that's about what you'd expect, maybe 1-3 more than what you'd expect at best.

In the era 15 years ago of great centers this guy wouldn't have gotten shit, but nowadays...

Dude, Haywood is statistically one of the best defensive center in the league. Gooden plays no defense, get lost during rotations etc.

Hard to imagine when watching him play with the Wizards. He was 40 and was still capable of putting up 50 points, and almost did it back to back. He was a pretty durable guy.

Well, he again seemed to benefit from the off time, along with keeping in shape during those 2 stints retired... However, he did break down, IIRC, in BOTH seasons as a Wiz, causing them to miss the playoffs...

No, the years off hurt him his first season because his body wasn't ready for 82 game season. By the second season he was doing a lot better, and played all 82 games.

Fair points. Gooden is a defensive liability, hence the Corliss Williamson (or Rodney Rodgers) comparison. But I think those talents can be properly utilized... Haywood has a minimal offensive game at best, and again, is seemingly injury prone...

PM5K

I'm not disagreeing, just curious: So if a guy misses say an average of seven games a season, and one entire season, that makes him injury prone?

PM5K
07-08-2010, 02:31 PM
Hmm... Are you sure there wasn't a sore knee involved the 2nd season?

His knees weren't perfect, but he still averaged 37 minutes and put up 20 a game, at 40 years old. When he was done he'd ice the shit out of them, but so does Timmy.

Well, this is why I have no faith in Haywood. Haywood was tearing it up for the Mavs, and was seemingly the reason for their success. HOWEVER, I think he got hurt BECAUSE he was the only option at Center and he overexerted himself. That is what scared me about him. I've seen that before with the Pistons (Rasheed, Will Bynum and Tayshaun come to mind).

Zelophehad

I agree with Mavdynasty. Haywood has a long history of not dealing well with competition going back to his days getting into fistfights in practice with Etan Thomas in Washington and ripping Thomas dreadlocks out of his scalp.

Not trying to rip on Nash at all, but it's not really fair to Cuban how you criticize him like he wouldn't give a 2 time MVP that contract when at the time Nash was a borderline All-star. At the time Phoenix giving him that deal was a head scratcher, revisionist history ignores this but tons of Suns fans at the time were saying, "Great, more Bryan Colangelo overpaying B-list talent to keep the Suns competitive." No one knew it would turn out that well.

Since Nash joined the Suns, his teams have lost to the Spurs, Lakers and Mavs in the playoffs. And the year they lost to the Mavs was when Amare was injured for the season. So the worst you can say about Nash is that he wasn't good enough to beat two of the greatest players of all time in Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant.

There's a reason why every team Nash was on that's played the Spurs in the playoffs has only won 1 series.

Hell the guy couldn't even stay in front of Mike Bibby, much less Tony Parker.

You guys are still bitter that he left. Too bad Cuban would rather pay average centers like Dampier and Haywood than one of the ten best point guards of all time in Nash.

That's like me saying that the Mavs wouldn't have choked against the Warriors if they kept Nash. We will never know the answer to what the Mavs would have done if they kept Nash.

rofl because Nash was able to defend Davis, Ellis, Jax?

2004 the NBA had prime Duncan and prime Shaq. Dallas had no real center. Never. Nash was an above average PG in his late 20s. No one knew he would step up in his game and would be so good THIS long.

I have no problem with Cuban going for the center instead of Nash.

This is what you're not getting dude. Don't you think if Cuban knew Nash would turn into a 2 time MVP HOFer once he went to Phoenix he woulda made more of an effort to keep him? When Cuban let Nash leave, he was a 30 year point guard with a bad back, who at his best was a borderline AS, fresh off getting worked by Mike Bibby in a 1st round playoff exit. He had no way of knowing Nash would turn into one of the best players in the NBA. It's a lot easier to say Cuban fucked up in hindsight, but at the time it made perfect sense for Cuban to go in a different direction with a more defense oriented team.

I don't care who he spends his money on. It just proves that he isn't spending his money wisely. Mavs fans are still cursing about that Dampier albatross contract.

Oh and if the system is tailor made for Nash, then please explain D'Antoni's lack of success in New York? The system doesn't work so well when Chris Duhon is the point guard.

Does Nash's ball sack taste delicious to you?

You'd have to be an idiot to believe he would be as effective on offense after having to guard Davis on the other end, who is a much bigger, faster, stronger, and physical player than Nash.

I can agree that maybe we beat GS with Nash, but we never get past San Antonio with him. The total lack of defense on his part makes it hard to build a championship team around him

DUNCANownsKOBE2

IMO it's pretty obvious Nash woulda helped Dallas out against Golden State. When a series is that up tempo any team with Steve Nash is gonna have the edge because of how well he does in those games. With that said, them losing that series was more an indictment of Avery Johnson's coaching and how easy it was to turn a game against them into a jump shooting orgy. If Dallas was a championship team that year they woulda been able to just slow it down and out execute G-State in the half court, it's not about Nash/no Nash.

The 2006 Spurs series will always provide enough reason why Dallas shouldn't be criticized for letting Nash leave. Eric Dampier, the guy they could get once Nash left, defended Duncan better than Dallas ever did in 2001 or 2003. Tony Parker had a very sub par, inconsistent series he woulda never had against Nash. Dallas was attacking the hoop better than any team led by Nash ever has, and they executed in the half court better than they ever did with Nash.

Okay you got me. You didn't say Davis is a better player but your quote about Nash not being as effective on offense after going against a bigger stronger and faster player is ignorant. The way Golden State played defense, there's no way that Nash would have been shut down. He's a better shooter, passer and thinker than Davis. Don't act like Davis's strengths would be an advantage over Nash's strengths.

Then what are the Mavs doing with Jason Kidd as the point guard. As great as he once was defensively, he has been torched the last three years. Its forgivable to get torched by Chauncey Billups and Chris Paul, but to get torched by George Hill? Notice that Hill didn't fair so well against Nash in the next round.

Kidd's problem is that he plays so much help defense, that he leaves guys like Hill wide open for long jumpers, and Hill happened to have the series of his life and hit them all. Kidd needs to work on staying home on shooters this year.

Mavs fans should realize that Devin Harris and Steve Nash could have played together. So to say Nash's defense was holding them back is a copout considering that Harris could have defended the other teams best perimeter player.

You have a case if you put it that way. If Nash plays the Jason Terry role and guards Bowen, the Mavs might win it all in 06. Certainly would have a player to make more clutch shots in the Finals.

Going out and getting Kidd is actually what makes them letting Nash go look questionable. From 2005-2007, it made perfect sense for Dallas. They moved away from being an up tempo team and toward being a half court, defensive minded team that didn't require a PG to do so much on offense. Letting Nash leave allowed J-Ho and Devin Harris to develop into good individual players, it allowed Dirk to become a more complete player who was a lot better at getting high % shots, Jason Terry was fine as the short term replacement, and Dallas was able to have a legit center on the court at all times since they no longer had a PG who was ineffective with a big man clogging the lane.

Now that they traded Harris for Kidd and brought in a guy like Marion, you're right, it begs the question why not just keep Nash in the 1st place if using a high assist PG is such a huge part of your offense. The thing is, they made the Kidd trade out of desperation, it wasn't their ideal scenario. When Devin Harris never took the next step they expected him to take, Josh Howard stopped taking the ball to the hole and started settling for jumpers, Jason Terry got to old to do anything other than spot up, and Jerry Stackhouse just got old period, their only option was to get a PG who could take the ball out of their hands and make things easier for them.
