I thought NBA rules dictated Chalmers couldn't change his number for a year? I remember because Jason Terry couldn't give Shawn Marion #31 due to this rule.

Is this some bullshit rule bending to accomodate the King?

You can't bend the rules when the rules are fixed to begin with.

Tbh the Heat probably would have cut Chalmers just to give Lebron the number if the league didn't allow it.

A little googling shows Chalmers tried to change his number before last season. He wanted 15 originally since it was his college number, but Mark Blount had it:

Lebron is so self absorbed he probably had no idea one of his future teammates already had #6. I doubt that James asked permission for the number before talking about his new jersey #.

It sounds more and more like Lebron got to do whatever he wanted the last seven years in Cleveland and he's just being what he is - a spoiled brat. He can't help himself now - he's too far gone. Cleveland never demanded LeBron to "get over himself".

I don't blame LBJ as much as the enablers and yes men that surround him now and have surrounded him for the last 10 years. That massive ego of his has been stroked and coddled for a long long time.

It is hard to listen to a semi-literate refer to himself in the third person time and time again. The lack of humility is pretty apparent. Mike Brown and Danny Ferry probably had zero ability to reign LBJ in over the last three or four years because the owner would not allow it. Then they get thrown under the bus by the owner so that LBJ would stay. That franchise was dysfunctional just like Phoenix appears to be with a weirdo owner.

You pay the guy to give you his number. It has happened before.

That's pretty much the high and short of it.

Hopefully Dan Gilbert understands he helped create this monster in the first place and saves some of that righteous anger for himself.

If by some stroke of fortune this team gets some real All-Star players in here, Dan will need to not fall into the same trap. He'll need to let them know it's about the team first.

Fortunately for you guys, I think Dan Gilbert has learned his lesson about making 1 player bigger than the team. On the flip side, if this didn't teach him that lesson, nothing will. I wasn't kidding when I said I envy the situation the Cavs are in. They have an owner extremely loyal to the city who wants to win, and the Cavs situation can do nothing but get better at this point. He should bring in Kevin Pritchard since he can tear a team down and start from scratch.

This, Duncan, is why what you did is so sad.

Maybe Stern wrote a loophole addendum to the rule allowing a player to give up his number if the player he's giving up his number for had already filed to change his number on time the previous season, which I believe LeBron did file to change his number to $6 a few months ago by the deadline.

Stern would make that addendum for one of his BFFs.

I believe if you change teams, you can change numbers. I believe the rule only applies to changing your number on the same team.

It was reported that Chalmers had already made the request to change to 15, but couldn't because Blount was on the roster. Perhaps since he made the request before March of this year and now that Blount is gone, he has been given the green light to change.

I was asking why Chalmers was allowed to change his number to accomodate LeBron. Apparently he already requested a number change.
