19. Tim Duncan | San Antonio Spurs | 1.2 makes/game | 67.8% assisted
Duncan is one of the best mid-range big men of all time, as he has proven over the years that you cannot leave him open from 20 feet and in. This year Duncan shot 43 percent from the mid-range. His patented bank shot has been used for 10+ years now, yet not many other players in the NBA seem to understand that you can make a living by using the backboard properly. One of, if not the best, to ever play his position, Duncan is a great mid-range player.

I'm saying this purely from an observation standpoint, the numbers may be horrible, i don't know...

but it seems to me Dwayne Wade would at least be top 5... I've always thought of him as being money from mid-range... but he doesn't even make the list?

Durant at 21 destroys whatever credibility this list has.

It's cool that Duncan is being recognized, but that list is fucked up.

Ok, looking at the numbers.... Wade is kind of boarderline on this list based on last year (1.9 makes on 36% shooting)... but in his previous 3 years he would have been around the top 10, with 2009 being his best of those three years. 2009 numbers would have put him 2nd on this list behind Dirk. (3.3 makes per game on 42% shooting)

#1 is well deserved for Dirk, he's just incredible from mid-range.

Imo Parker could've made this list.. His midrange game has become pretty deadly..

Do you realize there is statistical evidence there to go support his decisions? I'm sure someone should take your "these guys are jokes on the list" take over the guy who wrote the article :tu

Lebron? :lol

The guy bullies his way to the basket or launches a 3. His mid-range is pitiful.

Duncan was shooting 50+% from mid-range in the 1st half of the season for the last 2 years..it's one of the main reasons he looked amazing during that time, he was doing a lot of good work from the mid-post and with the face-up game..

His jump shot was horrible in the 2nd half of both years, just like the rest of his game during that time..

as for the credibility..

Before we jump straight in to the rankings, though, the criteria for this list has to be examined in advance.

Before creating this list, I went through all of the active players on NBA.com and wrote down the guys who I expected would be top 25 mid-range players in today’s game. Additionally, by checking out hoopdata.com (http://hoopdata.com/), I glimpsed the mid-range — 16-23 feet — depth shooting numbers to put some fact behind my opinion. A lot of the obvious players initially were good to stay, but a further look at a few players (I.e. Paul Pierce and his surprising 38 percent on just 2.4 attempts) took them out of competition.

Another stat I took in to account was the amount of shots converted off of assists in that range. This area has added importance because if a player makes a decent amount of his shots off the catch, in rhythm, it shows that the team is willing to run plays through this player because he is talented there. On the reverse side of this is the point guards, like Chris Paul and Steve Nash, who create almost all of their attempts in this region and deserve some credit for their shot creation and selection abilities.

But this list isn’t all about numbers, and that will show. One player is near the top of the list because his numbers are good enough and he has such a ridiculous repertoire that he uses to make his shots in this area. In the end, some of the calls were judgment calls but one thing is certain: The guys on this list all have talented mid-range games that help their team win. This forte makes them much more difficult to guard in the grand scheme of things.

as for the credibility..

This list is pretty credible because it uses statistics, not just what the writer thinks, to assemble it.

Butler at 3 is not a joke. He sucks at the rim and from three, can't get by people anymore or defend well, but his midrange game (read: stepback jumper) connects fairly well in the distinctive ranges that are considered good(38%) to great(>41%) for long jumpers.
