View Full Version : Butler or JJ?

It's quite obvious that we are currently sifting through free agents searching for that SF who adapts well to the Spurs' fundamental environment. I watched a couple HL videos for the two most likely candidates, and I couldn't put my finger on, which was better. Rasual Butler or James Jones? What is your opinion? What would most benefit the champs?

Butler.. But there's still Barnes in the mix I assume

Getting Derek Fisher back was probably of most benefit to them.

I prefer to have RJ back. But if it comes doens to these 2 option I go with Butler. James Jones is a one dimensional player - the only thing he does is shoot 3's. 0

When I read the title I thought this was going to be about Caron Butler and Joe Johnson.

Let RJ walk, take a chance on Tmac, and get Butler. This saves cash for either adding one more piece (Shaq for the min) or adding financial options to work on an extension for Tony.

I'd say Butler, he probably has a better all around game, unlike Jones who can just make 3's.

We most likely don't have enough money for him, and his off the court trouble is a major problem.

Given the current situation, I'd take either. Butler stands a decent chance of being unaffordable though........

Ahem, let me clarify by saying, the Lakers are not the champs I was referring to. In fact, I hate the Lakers with such great fervor, & they won the championships, but they'll never have what it takes to truly be champions, not as long as they keep inflating their heads and egos. Compare them to the humility of the old Lakers.

Anyways, so the majority prefer Rasual. But it escaped me that Barnes was an option. To me, Barnes is perfect, but I'm sure it won't work in our favor.

Butler of course! Dude can play D and shoot the 3, he's got good size as well. I just hope the Spurs make a move quickly before he gets signed by another team, I can't see them not signing a SF.

Does anyone know if it's possible that we could sign both of them?

I thought it was Caron and that little midget. I'd rather just re-sign RJ.

not crazy for either - while these guys are 6'7-6'8 they are barely 200lbs and nither are good defenders although Butler at least tries - just don't see much difference other than a couple inches between these guys and James Anderson except JA is stronger and more athletic than either guy - RJ is still best available answer at SF unless someone comes available through S&T - if RJ goes elsewhere may be just as well off to play the young guys (though undersized) vs spending money on avg SF and taking opportunity away from some combination of Harrison, Temple, Anderson, Gee, Gist, and/or Neal.

D-League players do not a championship team make.

Gee is definitely not ready for anything beyond sparse backup minutes, let alone a principle role on the team. Let him season for another year. Bring in a vet for now.

I'd say Butler.

I feel safer with Butler than Jones because Butler is more starter material than Jones.

isnt he like 6'3? would rather have size at the 3 then another shooter.

I've been saying Butler should be our guy all off-season, and I'm very surprised that it hasn't happened yet. He is a perfect fit for our needs (perimeter defence, clutch 3pt shooting) that could be had cheap.

Get it done, FO.

:rolleyes

McCants? What the fuck do we want with an undersized (6'4"), one-dimensional, selfish scorer?

If people complain about RJ's lack of rebounding, they'd go nuts on Rasual Butler. What does he average two boards per 30 minutes?

Anyway, I guess he'd be fine on the cheap, if RJ isn't returning. But his shooting percentage and rebounding leave something to be desired.

Butler's value is higher than 2.365 million TBH..

The guys we need to be asking ourselves about are Hayes, Nachbar and Jones. IMO

You did some pretty vigorous film study there.

If RJ's on his way back, and I believe he is, I don't see options appreciably better than Anderson, Hairston or Gee for what the Spurs need, at least not that they need to throw cash at at the moment.

I'd be perfectly content to allow the young guys an opportunity to see what they got and if the Spurs deem it necessary to upgrade the position, they should be able to target and find a better player during the season.

If the Spurs don't bring back RJ, the best fits as starters are Barnes, Butler and then the risky picks of Josh Howard and TMac.

If RJ is re-signed, I would then want another role playing spot-up shooter added to the mix, with James Jones being the best shooter on the market. Bobby Simmons is another career 40%-plus career three-point shooter available to sign.

Both guys won't put SPURS on top of Lakers. Why bother? I would rather save money and give more playing time to develop the young players instead.

if RJ doesnt return butler would be our best bet, when you compare whos left to Rj it seems like " little ears" will be back which is fine with me

I like Butler.
James Jones is a one trick pony (3pt shooter) and injured a lot. Matt Barnes is a defensive specialist and not a very spectacular one. Butler is a good balanced player. He isn't as good a shooter as Jones, but he is clutch He isn't as good a defender as Barnes (actually, he's not that far off), but he is long, a pretty decent shot blocker and feels like a good fit for the system.
Josh Howard and Tracy McGrady are too risky. Butler seems like the right guy.

Of course, if RJ isn't re-signed, we are going to be pretty weak at SF no matter what.

Yeah, you're right about that, but with the bigs we have now boards shouldn't be too much of an issue. Butler rebounds about as much as Bruce used to, anyway... :lol
