why would they bother to make Cap's uniform more practical and realistic?

If they were to go all the way, they would make the shield camoflage instead of a big bright red and white shield in the shape of a giant target.

I can't help but think 'fail'.

well that is his ww2 uni not his present day one, also i'm assuming stark designs his shield which would explain why Tony has it now.

I believe (not 100% on this) that, in Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, Howard Stark (Tony's father) designed Cap's shield back in WWII, the triangular/interstate sign, as well as the round version most are accustomed to.
