I searched but couldn't find a thread that celebrated the world of Electronica, so I decided to make a small thread up in here. If you're an aficionado of this genre, feel free to post some of your favorite tracks or those that may be obscure. I'll start off with a little DnB.

Yeah, I love me some dubstep. I grew up on house and DnB mostly, but I welcome any form of electronica that moves me.

This was my genre of music back in the day. If the CD had an Astralwerks, Junior Boys Own, Ninja Tune, Wax Trax!, Mo'Wax logo on it, money was leaving my pocket.
Fell out of the loop with this genre in the early 00s, so I'm not sure what and who's current, although I do know that Grime/Dubstep is all the rage right now. Given my lack of knowledge of modern electronica, all I can offer are some classics from the mid/late 90s, early 00s.

I didn't really start expanding my musical desires until I got some good equipment. A good home theater/accurate speakers with a great set of headphones for listening on the go has really, really increased my aptitude as far as looking for/enjoying different styles of music.
Electronica, to me, still sounds like crap in a pair of $20 headphones. But put a solid pair of cans on my head with good isolation, and electronica is amazing. You can close your eyes and just disappear from the world for a little while.

I wouldn't say anyone's musical taste is limited because though I pride myself on having a taste that encompasses many genres, I know that there is tons I don't know. That's the beauty of music, in my opinion, is discovering something you like from an unexpected source. I became a fan of electronica based on a handful of friends who were DJs and part of the big promotion crews (when they were upstarts...) out here in LA, so I was basically living the "groove" lifestyle. lol
I do agree with Havoc though, electronica is limited when you're using just headphones.

I would. Mine for example. Metal, rock, classical and opera. Beyond that, nothing blows my skirt up.
But thats me, a limited listener who hasnt found good music since the Black Keys. Ive been listening to the same music for 25+ years with a new artist every 2-3 years.
Its pathetic, really.

Yeah, but within those four genres are subgroups of music. You have heavy metal...industrial...thrash and the like. That could lead to you exposing someone, say, like me who doesn't know much about metal beyond Sepultura, Slayer, and Fear Factory lol.

Saw The Orb live, not really my thing musically, but they had a sick live show.
Good DJs/acts I have seen:
Daft Punk (simply unreal live, I shit you not)
Bjork (her voice is ridiculous live and her band was super tight)
Green Velvet (old school Chicago progressive house)
Muscles (dude from Australia with a lot of heart)
Cheb I Sabbah
Tommie Sunshine
John Kelly
Felix Da Housecat
Air (only if you are outdoors and chilling)
BT
Carl Cox (a lot better live than I expected)
Meh:
Thievery Corporation
Oakenfold
Ladytron (more a band really)
Those that sucked:
Audio Bullys
Chemical Brothers (think i caught them cracked out)
Basement Jaxx (easily the worst electronica I have ever seen)
Presets
The Gemini Method

Can't really agree with your listing of The Presets as 'electronica.' They're more a band than DJs. The Chemical Bros. are amazing live--so you would probably not be cracked to get their shows.
Green Velvet
Daft Punk are definitely agreeable.

I'm not a huge Basement Jaxx live fan--but I like some of their music. I've spent nearly 15 years listening to this genre and it's so vast that you can find new stuff out that you've never heard!

I used to live in Cali. It sucks they closed down Circus, we had some great times there back in the Giant/Spundae days. That place had a great system, awesome space, and the best people working there. The polar opposite of Avalon. Every time I went to that place it was always such a shitty time I wonder why I went after I leave. Fuckin place attracts too many guidos and orange county shitheads. Not even close to the same thing as the Circus Disco. Man that place was great. WTF ever happened there? Is Gene still getting dick slapped by the city/mafia? That place needs to come back, it was just so great for the LA scene. Fuck.
Of course I live back in South Texas now so it wouldn't matter to me anyways :lol

Never saw them. tbh the worst time I had was in NYC although I didn't go that much when I was there. The rare times I went to a club it was filled with American Apparel hipsters and dirtbag eurotrash instead of cute asian girls hugging each other. If I had more time when I was there I could have maybe found some cooler spots.

tbh just to fellate Circus a little more...
When you went there you knew:
that you were going to be treated with respect by the staff...
that if there was crappy trance in the big room you could always pop in the side room and see Sol, Valerie and the Vibe Tribe, or something bouncy...
that you could get on the $10 list and show up before 11 most nights no problem...
that the outside was a place where you could hang out instead of some crappy alley...
that they would not double book the room and keep you waiting outside forever....
that the crowd would be chill...
that there would be lasers and go go dancers...
that you could party without feeling threatened or having to worry about whatever...
When you think about it, none of that on its own is really amazing, but they did all of it and none of the other big clubs in LA did. Several really crappy experiences at Avalon, Hollywood Athletic, and the downtown clubs made me appreciate Circus that much more.
I was also partial to Circus because it was the shortest cab ride to my place of all the clubs.

SF was great for little asian girls. Not too hard to pick them up when they're rollin' their socks off. Favorite club there was 1015 Folsom
Atlanta was mostly a bunch of middle class kids who liked to roll in from the burbs (like myself).. Especially the trance parties
The jungle/DNB/Breaks parties were always sick in tha ATL because you'd get the most diverse crowds and all the break crews would come out and put on a helluva show.
Only place I've ever really partied on the East Coast was Nation in DC. It was a foam party and Mauro Picotto was spinning, along with Lisa Lashes. Top notch, especially since 95% of the women were in bikinis and wet :tu

Circus had way too many people get rolled that it drew attention that it changed its image a tad bit. They had Mark Farina there sometimes last year and some local DnB DJs later on, but not to the same extent that Spundae used to have. The scene has changed considerably in the SoCal area and it hasn't for the better. It's now more about how many minors you can pack into a venue. There is one venue that does Breaks and DnB without compassion of hosting big crowds and that's Respekt in Hollywood. Other than missing how much random Asian strange I was fortunate to experience in my days of immersion into this scene, I don't miss the crowd whatsoever.

As long as we're reviewing cities...Not a pro on the NYC scene, but this is where I have been:
Studio B in Brooklyn is good. They got a great sound system and its pretty low key over there. I had a ton of fun when I saw Green Velvet there.
Been to Hiro a bunch. Its a gorgeous club, but the crowd does not do a lot for me. Ed Banger and GBH do a lot of stuff there and its not hard to get on lists.
Pacha is supposed to be the club for the big DJs, but I have not been to it yet.
Been to a lot of nights that are just in random nondescript clubs, like Motherfucker which was at Rebel last time I went. Element is not bad, but nothing special either.
A lot of acts will play places that bands play, I saw Justice at Terminal 5 which is sort of a grimy industrial setup with three levels of overhanging wrap around balconies over the main floor. The Chemical Brothers went to Hammerstein Ballroom and some old outdoor pool in Brooklyn for their shows.
I was pissed that I missed Underworld at Central Park. That was supposed to be a good one.

I haven't stopped going out per se--I've just really cut back to what I used to do. I mean, we used to go find clubs and venues that would spin house and other genres of electronica like 3 or 4 times a week. It's been about a good 7 years or so since those type of ventures. It would be like a non-stop party from small venues wednesday-friday and masterdome/Massives on Saturday and the chill club on Sunday...repeat, rinse, and do it all over again.
Now, my job and other responsibilities don't allow me to do it like it used to be done...but man, I'm sure you and anyone that got into this scene had some great times.

That is quite the culture change, I bet.
She's a UK grad, and my former gf, as of 3 weeks ago or so. She's 7 years younger than me, so it just wasn't going to go anywhere. It was a fun 9 mos, though.
As for culture shock, no, not really. I've lived all over the country so I don't really think any part of the US could shock me anymore.
Unless you like it, in that case good times :lol
It's not Cali, but it's alright. Lexington is a mix of the midwest and the south, and actually has a bit of culture to it other than just inbred rednecks (Like Jackson or Montgomery etc). I also have family nearby for a change, my Uncle is a prof at UK (so I get tickets to UK games, went to three last year, as well as the UK/Auburn football game) so it's cool to see them from time to time. Hadn't lived close to any family since before the Army (11 years or so)
It's laid back and mid-sized, not real bad. Certainly not the worst place I've lived. Will I stay? Who knows, I never seem to stick anywhere for more than 5 or 6 years, so we'll see.

As for going out, I used to drive 5 or 6 hours to see DJs or bands I wanted to see if need be, but those days are long gone. Now I just follow from afar, but if an event or act I really wanted to see came near I still might check it out.
Problem here is, almost all of my friends are into classic rock/hard rock or country(barf), so nobody really gives a shit about going to see any electronic acts or DJs. Me and my ex would go to louisville to dance, but never saw anybody worth mentioning. Just local residents spinning house and trance. Not bad, but not up to the level I'd been used to

Thanks man. :tu All of these tracks really take me back as well; I pretty much started digging through my crate and pulling out all my old favorites, and it came together pretty easy. Each one has its own time and place in my heart. Breathe In You was one of the first tracks that really turned me onto electronic music. And of course, Flaming June is just about as good as a trance track gets.

The Beggars and KRS-1 really shine in these two tracks. Hip-hop/DnB/Dub Step, Noisia does it all.

Yeah - commercial is cool. Pretty fucking funny to see Agudelo on there with the other superstars though. Cracks me up so much.

tbh Joe Nice talked about him on this docu I saw (Dubfiles a long (nearly 3 hours) documentary on dubstep). I guess I could give a quick review of that film since it fits in with this thread/ Its a good watch if you're into the genre. Some of the British guys such as Skream are hard to understand when they talk and its not really an introduction to the subject like most docus are I mean I don't think Beats Per Minute or any of the stuff that goes into defining dubstep technically are even mentioned iirc. But its good for fans. Basically its just interviews of several leading dubstep producers. The questions are left off camera and the interviewee basically paraphrases the question and then answers it. They basically tell why the like the genre, tell their stories of how they got started, tell some djing stories, and discuss what the equipment they use etc.
Bassweight is supposed to be a good docu on dubstep too and its only an hour but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I downloaded both of them from a certain demon based torrent site. They are still on there atm if anyone is interested.
