I'm digging this card, for sure. It's an easy one to call too -- I expect to go 5-0.
Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen -- Fuck Silva, I don't care if he's fighting Mr. Hanky the Christmas Pooh, I'll never pick him to win.
Welterweight bout: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves -- Too much wrestling, too much boredom, too much Jon Fitch.
Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos -- Has Guida ever won a fight? He reminds me so much of Bonnar. Sure, he wins a few, but it seems like every fight I see him in he loses/burps.
Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida -- One of the very few vets who will go out on top. I just love Hughes and his game. He's one of the originals that got me into the sport, so I just can't pick against him.
Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos -- JDS is solid, but Roy is just too much. I LOVE watching this fat lard dominate.

2 things; first of all, why isn't the Fitch/Alves fight on the poster? Second, how in the hell is Thiago Silva on the prelim? I absolutely hate the guy but I was expecting a TSilva vs Rampage after Page lost to Shad. That could be a headliner IMO

1) I don't think the fight was finalized until AFTER tickets went on sale. They needed the posters sooner and just bumped the Hughes bout lower and put Alves/Fitch as co-headliner.
2) Thiago vs Rampage is bad for both at this time IMO, but he's prolly on this card as a way to set him up for a co-headliner next time he fights.
Main card
Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen
- I think Silva will hurt Sonnen, like really. But I don't discount that a freak win could happen in Sonnen's favor if he smothers Silva on the ground long enough.
Welterweight bout: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
- Fitch is great, but Alves is a big boy with a chip on his shoulder. I'm lobbying for an Alves vs Sheilds match next.
Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
- This COULD be a real good fight, I'm going with Clay cuz Dos Anjos beat Etim (my WW rank-climbing prospect) and I haven't forgiven him yet.
Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
- Hughes's age will show and the Gracie's will prepare Almeida too good for him to get caught in anything off his back.
Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos
- Probably fight of the night, and it's up first. REALLY fun fight to think about the possibilities for vicious finishes. I'm a fan of both guys, but I give the edge to Roy even though he has been the victim of a KO in the past.
The Prelims are pretty great too, surprised there's no TV for them.

Main card
Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen
The only way Sonnen wins this fight is to GNP his way to a decision. If this was a 3 rounder maybe but not with it being a 5 round title fight. He was a little gassed at the end of the Marquadt fight when Nate finally got off and was doing some damage. Silva's JJ is too good to get put away by Sonnen and i think after 2 rounds of some TD's and control by Sonnen, Sonnen will slow a little and Silva will knock him out..
Welterweight bout: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
I hope the layoff is not a big factor here. Alves has improved more since the first fight but Fitch is one tough SOB.. Alves TDD better be on point..
Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
Guida grinds out another one..
Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
Tough one to call, hopefully Hughes retires after this. If he is not interested in fighting the top WW's anymore than pack it in Matt..
Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos
JDS by KO round 1.. He's a beast...

Also, it just occured to me, but maybe Fitch is a genius. His goal, as a "real" martial artist, is to neutralize his opponent in the most peaceful way possible. Think about it, then hit this blunt...:smokin

He didn't destroy him he was caught in a submission which has been his problem throughout his career. Nate is twice the fighter Maia is and Sonnen walked through him. Silva is gonna win i am sure, i did pick him but i do think we are seeing the best Sonnen ever right now.. What he has that nobody else did when it comes to facing Silva is the TD threat. Hendo is a greco Roman guy, and he did get a TD and won round 1 of their fight.. Sonnen is all about the double leg. That's his one chance here.. Is it a big chance? No..
but a chance..

Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen
You kidding? A dancer vs wrestler. You pick a winner in a fighting contest. Easy pick.
Srsly: Anderson is on another level, but how fun is to hear Sonnen and, he can wear Silva down. He needs like 3 rounds. Against Maia Anderson was unable to do anything in the 4th and 5th. I don't know if Sonnen will try to stand up a bit with Silva or just goes for double leg early. he must to do it carefully cause he can get kneed.
Jeeeezz I want Anderson lose so much :)
I WILL RETIRE THIS GUY
:D FUN TA STIC
Welterweight bout: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
Fitch wants to make a big statment. There is no way he is not gonna get a title shot after he wins this. Still there is Shields vs Kampmann in contention
Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
[I]Hate Guida
Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
Almeida will smash a legend. Going division down was a good move for Ricardo.
Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos

That interview with sonnen on UFC live on VS was brilliant.
Chael actually says he is better and faster then Silva. :D
I love it.
The thing is that Anderson can be broken but only when he will have tough time. Then in his mind can appear a thinking "maybe that son of a biotch was right? "
That bit of a doubt could be crucial.
But only when Silva will have hard time or Sonnen will wear him down on the ground. Well that's actually the same

I don't think Silva will doubt himself, and on the ground Sonnen has been prone to being submitted. Everyone is banking on Sonnen's arms not being caught in something for his GnP to be effective. I think he can take some shorts and knees, but I dunno about his submission defense and that will ultimately be what I'm looking to see in the fight.

As much as i want Chael to break Silva in half, i dont think it is going to happen. I pick Silva to win, as much as i hate to do it. I really hope i am wrong here.
I think Alves is going to find a way to put Fitch out. Its hard to hate Fitch, but his fights are usually just so damn boring. I dont think Alves is going to let this fight go to a grind fest.
Roy Nelson v Junior...I don't know, everything tells me Dos Santos is just way too much of a fighter for Nelson. Nelson always surprises me though. I pick Dos Santos, but i wouldn't be surprised if Nelson takes the initial heat, and frustrates him into making a mistake. If Nelson can pull this off, i will laugh my ass off.

Right now I've got it...
Anderson Silva (C) vs. Chael Sonnen
Jon Fitch vs. Tiago Alves
Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
Junior dos Santos vs. Roy Nelson
First off, don't count Big Country Roy Nelson. He's a Renzo black belt and a former IFL Heavyweight Champion, that guy is game against everybody. Including Arlovski. They stood that fight up from I believe a crucifix from side mount? It was something ridiculous, but it's been too long for me to remember. Me being a fan of Matt Hughes has clouded my judgment for that fight, can tell how I actually feel. I think the other Dos Anjos might really give Clay Guida a run for his money, he tapped Terry Etim in his last fight and everybody was getting ready to crown Etim the future of 155, but also remember that Etim isn't some dominating wrestler like Guida. Should be an interesting fight. Fitch/Alves is easy to me, Fitch I think Fitch is CAPABLE of beating anybody at 170 not named GSP.
And then to the main event. I've drunk the Chael Sonnen Kool-Aid to be honest. :toast I really truly believe that he's got what it takes to beat Silva. Hendo is my favorite fighter, but I don't see Chael getting off the gameplan like Dan Henderson did, and when he's striking his shots aren't wide. Chael actually has very decent stand up, it's not bad at all. I'd honestly worry more about him getting submitted in Silva's guard than getting knocked out. And keep in mind, Dan Henderson's wrestling translates to MMA a little differently, both guys come from a Greco-Roman background, but Chael was also a Division I All-American at Oregon. He can shoot for takedowns and he can do it very very well. Yushin Okami is a strong strong wrestler, he proved that the other night against Munoz and he had NOTHING for Chael. Chael Sonnen is probably the best MMA wrestler in the UFC right now outside of GSP and Brock. And his credentials as an Olympic alternate outweigh Brock's. People who aren't giving him a chance though didn't watch the first round of Hendo/Anderson Silva.

I don't really follow this as much as you guys, but I have caught a few of Silva's fights. We have a sportstalk station here in Baltimore that I catch at night while at work, and the concensus is that Silva is going to decimate this guy and there is no one at 185 who can come remotely close to beating him. Not sure how true that is though.

He's already been tapped twice. And he's lost 4 times. A decision in his first fight and he got DQ'ed against Yushin Okami. Tbh, he's got an aura about him. He's showed vulnerabilities against Dan Henderson and he almost got pounded out by Travis Lutter. He can be beaten.

That is the only way you can beat Silva, you can't out strike him, you have to get close and attempt to take him down and try to get something done on the ground.
The thing is, it is so hard to time anything against Silva because of his stance. But if Sonnen is going to have any chance he has to get in range for the shoot and get the fight to the ground.

I agree.. Silva was very calm at the press conference and kept staring Sonnen down even after Sonnen turned away. Silva didn't take him light he is ready for him. Welterweight fighter Thiago Alves' worries about making his cut turned out be justified.
Alves was the one athlete who failed to make weight today at the Ultimate Fighting Championship's official weigh-ins for UFC 117 in Oakland. Alves could not get lower than 171.5 pounds in two tries for his upcoming fight with Jon Fitch. Alves will be fined 20% of his purse.
Full results for the UFC 117 weigh-ins:
•Middleweight championship (185-pound maximum): Anderson Silva (184.5 pounds) vs. Chael Sonnen (185 pounds)
•Welterweight (170-pound maximum): Thiago Alves (171.5) vs. Jon Fitch (170.5)
•Welterweight: Ricardo Almeida (170.5) vs. Matt Hughes (170.5)
•Heavyweight (265-pound maximum): Junior Dos Santos (240) vs. Roy Nelson (263)
•Lightweight (155-pound maximum): Rafael Dos Anjos (156) vs. Clay Guida (156)
•Welterweight: Rick Story (169.5) vs. Dustin Hazelett (169.5)
•Light heavyweight (205-pound maximum): Phil Davis (205.5) vs. Rodney Wallace (206)
•Welterweight: Johny Hendricks (171) vs. Charlie Brenneman (171)
•Light heavyweight: Tim Boetsch (206) vs. Todd Brown (206)
•Heavyweight: Stefan Struve (247) vs. Christian Morecraft (263)
•Welterweight: Dennis Hallman (171) vs. Ben Saunders (171)
Concerns about weight caused Alves to skip an open workout for the public on Wednesday, as the fighter reportedly weighed 177 pounds at that point. But he insisted that the weight cut was going well.
Weight issues have plagued him occasionally. Alves came in four pounds overweight for his June 2008 bout with Matt Hughes at UFC 85 in England. He rarely hits the 170-pound mark -- he usually comes in at 171, just low enough to make the one-pound allowance that fighters typically give each other.
Alves has said he suffered an ankle injury shortly before the Hughes bout that prevented him from doing cardio work that would have let him shed weight. This time, Alves is coming off a layoff of more than a year.

I like this card, Alves vs Fitch, Nelson vs Dos Santos are the fights that I'm excited about!
Alves Is a devastating striker with earthshattering leg kicks but Fitch is a well rounded well tested veteran. I'd like to see the striker win, but if Alves hasn't improved his take-down defense (his timing on his sprawl), I think Fitch will make it a long night for him ala GSP. Also How well Alves has recovered from his brain surgery may play a factor.
Roy Nelson is a very well rounded heavy weight with a good wrestling background and knockout power who really knows how to smother opponents underneath him with his big gut.. Dos Santos though is a very quick mobile heavy weight and is a flash knock-out threat with both hands.. I think Nelson is going to have to make this fight a wrestling match because although Big Country can throw some bombs on the feet, Dos Santos' hands are second only to Shane Carwin in the heavy weight devision imo.

Not reading the whole thread but Sonnen was on Rome the other day and he was accused of saying Lance gave himself cancer because he doped. Sonnen refuted it and Rome played the interview of Sonnen saying that... sounded exactly like Sonnen but he denied it saying it was a fraud with a hispanic accent :lol . Rome was basically laughing saying it was Sonnen during the interview.
That's probably why they are booing him.

Not sure he is that much faster than Nate. He''s more technical and a way better striker..
But we'll see.. I'm picking Silva but pulling for Sonnen here..
On another note i am going back and forth about Fitch and Alves, wondering about how bad that weight cut was for Alves but i am gonna stick with Alves thinking about his TDD and striking

Vitor vs Silva is not appealing to me, despite his age Silva can still strike and unless Vitor has Big Country's chin there's no way it gets into Championship Rounds because Vitor will stand and bang. Vitor vs Silva is not appealing to me, despite his age Silva can still strike and unless Vitor has Big Country's chin there's no way it gets into Championship Rounds because Vitor will stand and bang. I'll sig bet anyone that thinks Vitor will win if he fights Silva next, Silva wins handily despite this performance.
I agree Vitor loses..
And What has Vitor done to deserve a crack at the belt. He beat Rich and then got hurt and had a huge layoff.. So what?
Sonnen should get another immediate crack here.. I'd love to see the GSP fight but he is busy with TUF..

This is the type of fight I wanted from Silva either a tough 5 rounder win or loss, either way his ego has come back to earth.
I've always respected as him as a fighter, and it seemed right when I got really interested in MMA he started all this dance and dash stuff in the ring.
This is what I hope doesn't happen to Jon "Bones" Jones, I like fighters with those unorthodox styles but who are still technically sound

Difference between Jones and Silva..
Jones is a far better wrestler than Anderson and doesnt get taken down, although.. no way Jones finishes the fight like that because his JJ game isnt near Silvas.

Bones is in good hands, I don't think we have to worry about him pulling any bullshit. Plus, his division has better figthers. It's taken 11 matches for Silva to be dominated, so he probably acted up because he got cocky and didn't think anyone out there could touch him. And now, he's been touched. :p:

As much as that is a bitch move, I've seen other fighters do the same thing on tap outs and when refs think a guy is out and he may or may not be out; Silva on the other hand just won a great come back fight in the 5th round and pulls the rib card.

How is Silva a jerk? He talked NO trash. Took care of business and was respectful. Youre talking about Chael Sonnen. His mouth has made him a joke for years. Silva is a good guy. IMO he wants to fight a guy like Sonnen and when he gets a flop like Maia, it makes him angry so he mocks them.

It looked like that, but he was sincere. It's hard to explain, but when you're training, you get caught in a sub, you tap, you keep going. That becomes natural. You fight like you train. In the fight, he got caught in a triangle, naturally tapped, but definitely did not intend to. I really wouldn't even be surprised if he wasn't mentally conscience about tapping. I did a shit job of explaining that, but there is something I'm trying to say.
And he backed up every word he said. Deserves an immediate rematch. Didn't lose to the better man, but he did lose. And he accepted that. Although, the guy who 'won' did such a shit job he had to make excuses after the fight.

Rogan made a comment to the effect of "THere's no reason for a guy to have pectoral muscles like that" and it's probably true. He's got so much muscle on him and it's no use to him when the weight cutting is draining all his strength anyway.

I agree with your point, but I don't think it doesn't apply to Roy Nelson. His fat is mostly strategic...what ruined the fight for him was 1) exhausting his arm strength on desperate takedowns because 2) JDS hits like a surgeon cuts people open. He was hurting but kept engaging - when a guy backpedals cuz he's too fat in the later rounds, then there's a problem. I honestly don't think Roy expected JDS to defend his takedowns that good.

Dude this isnt the first time he has tried to play that card..
His corner man Matt Lindland did it too against Bustamante. But it just didn't bother me. It's not like it was the most conscience decision in the world, he was running on emotion. That can cause most of us to do stupider stuff than 'pretending' to tap, if that's what he did. Either way, the rematch will happen and I'll support the guy who made a mistake and tried to go back on it for a few seconds over the dude who made excuses after winning the fight he got his ass handed to him so bad.
Anyways, the rest of the card rocked too. Fitch/Alves wasn't a great fight, but I didn't expect it to be. With a weight cut like that, Thiago Alves was hardly game and Jon Fitch would probably be too much for him regardless...Just about every fight Fitch is in will look similar to that other than GSP. Alves is too small to move up to 185, his arms are too short and he's too short (5'9 middleweight who's a striker? No thanks.) But my God, he needs to go to a nutritionist (or me, I'm an exercise and sports science major :lol) and change his diet completely. I'm not saying he's not eating healthy, I'm saying there's certain things about his diet that are going to cause him to be a jacked mofo. I guy with his frame should have no problem making 170.
Clay Guida/Rafael Dos Anjos I wasn't huge on because I'm not a fan of either. I liked watching Dos Anjos' muay thai though, kicks were great. Crap ending to the fight, but that's not anybody's fault, I'm sure he didn't want to break his jaw. Dos Santos/Nelson was one of the biggest displays of heart I've ever seen. That's about all I've got to say about that fight. And Matt Hughes, never felt better for the dude, it's the best he's looked in years. He showed power in his hands which are always being called questionable, and he choked out a legitimate black belt, enough said.

I'm so pissed that ... FUCK I'M PISSED !!1
Fucking Silva was demolished.
Nobody in the world believed in the trash Sonnen thrown, about one sided pounding.
But he did it and in countdown show you could see his determination. Second to none. That he would gave up everything and start from the beginning to get the gold medal.
And after the fight he was disappointed and said he needs to regroup because he needs to be no1 and do not want silver - to me that was astonishing. He said no word about Silva, that's shows you that he meant it when he said he wants to be a champ and beating Anderson is just a bonus.
Talking smack to Anderson was a strategy and some truth that people was for some reason avoiding.
Alves needs to keep himself lower then 200lbs
MW is not for him. long time ago i said that he will have to do it. But simple thing. lose weight, and he can lose some muscle weight. bigger muscles do not give you more power.
As for Vitor - I think he really would exploit Andersons stand up, like shogun did it with Machida.
As for GSP - well I told you so?
yes I did.
Hughes with lucky punch IMO and Almeida did not recovered. to me it was a strange fight. Almeida looked really good in his last two performances. Let's see what UFC will do with Matt. 170 is stacked right now.
Fitch vs winner of Kos vs GSP prob some March or April
Then maybe if Silva will not move up we will see GSP vs Anderson

Sonnen fought his ass off and I give him props for that. Most fighters would have just laid on him for the last two rounds knowing that they would win by decision but this guy wanted to prove a point. After being dominated for 4.5 rounds silva found a way to win the fight and you can't take that away from him. I would love to see a rematch and I still think Silva comes out on top.

Silva has never had good TDD. Fighters with average wrestling like Nate Marquadt, Rich Franklin, Thales Leites all got TD on him in the UFC.. Sonnen is the first double leg machine animal wrestler he fought that is pretty well rounded except for sub defense.. :bang

Of course Sonnen has to win the rematch. He can honestly be a little less aggressive on top next time and still win. Silva never came close to getting up one damn time when he was taken down. Sonnen blew his load a bit in the first 4 and he was lazily sitting in Silva's guard when he got hit with that triangle. Agree with your point about Vitor, i was looking forward to that as well. I think Sonnen dominates Vitor. Randy broke him badly more than once.. Tito got enough TD's to beat him.. He is another great striker that hates fighting wrestlers..

I was going crazy at my friends mma forum www.mmafans.net when that fight was happening, I knew both Sonnen had a tendency to get submitted and Silva is good at that triangle, especially with his long legs.
That was the first time during the match that he sat up on Silva's guard for the GnP, and he never got a punch off.
The main reason I thought it was Sonnen's night was for 4 reasons:
1. He didn't get KO early on in the 1st
2. He got tons of take downs
3. In the 1st (I think) Silva caught one of his kicks (which usually means bad things) but he did this awesome flip to get out of it.
4. When Silva finally got on top in the 3rd or 4th, Sonnen reversed it
-----
I went going in with my predictions knowing that Silva was probably going to win hands down because he is that good; I was picking Sonnen because I was hoping with his wrestling (wrestlers have given Silva trouble in the past, especially Hendo) would force a long competitive match and show Silva that everything isn't easy and would hopefully bring his ego back down to earth. Well Sonnen did that even in the loss, hell they both even hugged after the fight to show respect for each other.
White needs to start giving Silva only top 4 MW contenders the rest of his career from now on. He had a pretty easy ride the beginning and middle part of his UFC career, finish it off with tough opponents.

I'm still new to MMA/UFC stuff, my friend got me into it like 1 1/2 years ago. So every now and then there are fighters I don't know, certain historic fights I've never heard of.
But just like in every other sport that I start to pick up, I can usually tell what fighting styles match up well with each other and when the turning point in a fight happens.
I can't wait for UFC 118: Penn vs Edgar II and Couture vs Toney
