Yao may retire after season if foot not fully healed

Posted Jul 27 2010 11:20AM
BEIJING (AP) -- Houston Rockets center Yao Ming says he may quit basketball after next season if he doesn't fully recover from his foot injury.

In comments to Chinese state media Monday, Yao sounded far from optimistic about his future and also made a rare criticism of China's national basketball program.
Yao missed last season after foot surgery. He tells Xinhua News Agency he doubts he will play at the 2012 London Olympics. He says if the injury does not heal next season he "might choose to call it quits."
Yao also says Chinese basketball administrators were too focused on the Beijing Olympics and neglected developmental teams and the domestic professional league.

It is what it is, no point in getting injured every year. It's do or die this time around.

If he doesn't retire Houston's money grubbing owner will still give him a new contract because he makes money off Yao regardless of how much Yao hurts that team.

Would most(non Asian) rockets fans like to see him try to heal up or would you rather be done with him?

& you were so close in the Summer of '09, Double. Then the roof caved in and you've been in the caca ever since.

Oh, well, Doub, saylarvee.

I suppose he only wants to quit his National Team, as also Ilgauskas did. Even if he comes back, he cannot play every Summer, like he did until last season. So I guess he wants to prepare Chinese guys to what is going to happen.

I think he'll be back, and he'll be healthy. Ilgauskas healed from a similar injury, became slower, but he's still playing right now. He just didn't committ anymore with the Lithuanian national team. Yao from now will only play for the Rockets, maybe also 2012 Olympic Games, but nothing more than that...

Too bad for his foot he didn't take this attitude towards his national team from day 1.

He's not gonna magically stop being injury prone even if his foot heals like it should. I'd rather him ride off in the sunset...you just can't build a championship caliber team around a guy who can't stay healthy, that's a known fact.

I wish the guy well... but he's too big and too heavy. I think he's going to continue having foot problems during the long haul of the NBA season.

Chinese Basketball Administrators ran Yao's ass in the ground. The guy literally played year round for about the first 5-6 years of his NBA career. Unfortunately for him, the only time he got any rest was when he was injured.

Fulfilling his obligation to the National team, to prepare for the Bejing Olympics, was certainly part of his NBA contract and that's fine. However, it wasn't necessary for him to play each and every offseason leading up to those games.

I've always been convinced that his career would be shortened because he was never allowed to get any rest during the offseason. I fear that is exactly what is happening. Yao is a good guy, who really worked hard to become a great player. I hope he's not forced to retire early. He's good for the NBA and the Rockets.

Guys that tall don't have long careers because of all the stress that their lower body gets. Before the injury, he was clearly the best center in the league. I'm actually a fan of Yao and his no nonsense approach to the game.

This is the same reason why Wang Zhizhi wanted to defect to the US a couple of years back.

Yao might as well just retire now, he's delaying the inevitable...he will be injured early into the season, again.

He never has fully reached his potential, he has what it takes to dominate but if he can't stay healthy that is probably why he feels he may have to retire. Kind of sad really, Yao is a likeable player and is all about helping his team win.

Yao is arugably a top 2 center in this league if he is healthy. He can actually score with post moves rather than dunks unlike Dwight

Although I agree with the D. Howard take, the word healthy needs to be emphasized a whole lot more.

Gotta feel for the dude. He's a great player, had to make a major adjustment culturally and just when he gets a feel for the American game and starts to put it down, he can't stay healthy.
