Mari Hernandez was my boss and one of the coolest, sweetest, most beautiful people you would ever want to meet. She was also a damn proud A&M graduate who had a bright future ahead of her. She had a smile that brightened up the whole room. She will be deeply missed. RIP Mari.

An accident Sunday night in Robstown that resulted in serious injury to a Corpus Christi fire department captain and the death of his wife and two daughters has deeply affected the entire fire department, Fire Chief J.J. Adame said Monday.

Capt. Manuel Hernandez, a veteran of more than 32 years with the Corpus Christi Fire Department, remained in Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial late Monday after being in a twocar collision at about 7 p.m. in Robstown on Farm-to-Market Road 1889, less than a mile south of County Road 46.

The hospital did not release his condition Monday evening. City officials said Hernandez had been seriously injured.

In the accident, his wife, Josephina Hernandez, 49, of Robstown, and his two daughters, Maricella Nicole Hernandez of San Antonio, 24, and Melinda Hernandez, 14, of Robstown, were pronounced dead at the scene. Melinda Hernandez attended Robstown High School.

Maricella Hernandez was driving north in a 2004 Isuzu Rodeo when a 2002 Ford pickup being driven by Jesus Tranquilino Cortez Jr. of Robstown moved into her lane of traffic, according to the Texas Public Department of Safety.

Maricella Hernandez did not have time to take evasive action, authorities said.

Cortez was listed in fair condition Monday at Spohn Memorial.

Adame said he doesn't know how long Hernandez will be on leave.

"When things like this happen the department comes together," Adame said. "To help support the family."

Adame said he even received an offer for help from a Houston firefighter who was in Corpus Christi on Monday.

"That's just the way firefighters are," he said.

The collision still is under investigation and no tickets have yet been issued, DPS officials said late Monday.

Officials for Ramon Funeral Home in Robstown said funeral arrangements are pending.

Suddenly, you were gone
From all the lives you left your mark upon
I remember
How we talked and drank into the misty dawn
I hear the voices
We ran by the water on the wet summer lawn
I see the footprints
I remember
I feel the way you would
I feel the way you would
Tried to believe but you know it's no good
This is something that just can't be understood
I remember
The shouts of joy skiing fast through the woods
I hear the echoes
I learned your love for life,
I feel the way that you would
I feel your presence
I remember
I feel the way you would
I feel the way you would
This just can't be understood... -- Neil Peart, "Afterimage"
