Oregon State has traditionally focused on West Coast athletes on the recruiting trail, but things have changed with the Class of 2011 as the Beavers truly have gone national. With players hailing from as far away as North Carolina and Oklahoma, the Beavers are making their presence felt strongly in the Lone Star state as well.
BeaverBlitz caught up with the most recent player to pledge to Oregon State. A speed rushing defensive end from Spring (Tex.), a suburb of Houston, Brandon Bennett committed to Coach Reggie Davis sight unseen, but likes what he has heard about the Beaver program.
"Yes, I committed earlier this month," Bennett said. "I haven't been up to campus yet, but I hope to get up there as soon as I can. Right now I just really like the football program and the school and I am excited to play for a good program."
Besides Oregon State, Bennett holds offers from North Texas, Louisiana-Monroe, SE Louisiana and Utah State. While Alabama was always a favorite, he was quick to say that they weren't on top any longer.
The 6-foot-3, 250 pound athlete claims that his speed is his greatest asset as he considers himself a speed end.
He was aware that the Beavers had received pledges from two others from Texas already this year, including quarterback Peter Ashton from Grapevine and running back Storm Woods from Pflugerville. He also knows about the success that the Rodgers' brothers have had in Corvallis.
Being that he hasn't seen Oregon State yet, does he consider himself a solid commitment?
"I am pretty solid with the Beavers," he said. "I'm excited to get out there to see the campus."
Bennett is the ninth commitment of the 2011 class for Oregon State. Stay tuned to BeaverBlitz as we continue to keep you up to date on all of the Beaver recruiting news.
