View Full Version : Why can't Duncan Play The Role Of Horry/Rasheed

I remember Pop saying at one time that Duncan had a very good 3 pt shot. And in at least 2 playoffs, Duncan's 3 point shot has been pivotal.
Why hope for a born again Horry in Bonner, when Duncan's there. I understand the advantage of Duncan as a low post playmaker, but Horry and Rasheed were both playmakers in the high post.
With Splitter, I believe Duncan could do well and extend his career somewhat, rather than getting constantly beat up in the low post. Furthermore, Pop could surprise the hell out of the fakers.:flag:

Let's let one of the greatest pivot players shoot threes.

Lol Duncan would shoot at a low 20% clip if he decided to start launching from the perimeter. not necessarily what you want.

He probably could. However, like CD98 said, it made very little sense pulling him out of the paint to make space for KT/Nazr/Rasho to operate... Now that splitter is here (or possibly if Blair blows up), it might make sense. I have long hoped that TD would take an offseason (or maybe 2) and develop a sky-hook a la Kareem. I think this would greatly improve his potential longevity in this league...Being able to sky hook from the perimeter (20 ft), like Kareem would make Tim such a pair to cover, as well as putting him in a position to get back on D easily while a younger player (Blair/Splitter) went hunting O boards...

He's been asked to protect the paint by himself for years while he aged, why couldn't Timmy space the floor for his post game as well (and if he's out by the 3-point line he'll be in better position to get back in transition and defend the paint by himself as well).
It's actually pretty amazing Pop and Co. didn't think of this sooner (not Booner).

what do you base this theory on, not that I want timmy jacking up threes, but I am just curious how you figure he would shoot 20%. He's an accurate shooter, bigs will not come out to cover him because like you they figure he won't hit a high percentage, but what if he does and moves his game out a little bit more from time to time to rest his body if tiago and blair or jefferson of some of the guards pick up the slack in offensive rebounds or this may actually aid in the bigs getting back on d if timmy is the first one down on the defensive end

The best time to try this would have been during the Olympics when the US team couldn't hit from outside, Carlos Boozer hogged up the post, and the refs were trying to take Duncan out at every opportunity. Putting him outside as the three point specialist would have been a genius move. Now, not so much.

Ya know, now that Duncan's slowin' down a bit why don't the Spurs just switch roles within the Big 3? Tony's young, he's probably better suited to take the pounding the paint delivers. He could really utilize his quickness against centers and power forwards in the post.

The Omnipotent One seems to be finding himself quoted in sigs lately . . .
If you or a friend would like the Omnipotent's words to grace your sig, just let me know what you'd like me to say. I may lack humility but my shame is non-existent -- I love me some me quotes.

Give it time. Keep posting like you've been for the next 6 months to a year and I can guarantee that sig will work for you. And it will be all because of my Omnipotence. It'll have nothing to do with a rite of passage or whatnot for time served.
Trust me. I'm Omnipotent and stuff.
1. Putting Tim on the perimeter is like using a wrench for a hammer.
2. Teh intarnets are full of hate.
3. Tim has won 4 Crowns doing what he does.
4. Tim has earned the right to play any position he wants.

Why can't Duncan play the role of Hill/Parker?
He looks like he can dribble on the fast break at times. It would extend his career.
Trade Parker for a big and have Tim play point forward imo.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Duncan is a pretty accomplished mid-range shooter. Then again, it would be stupid for him to play in the outside when a bevy of better three-point shooters can play that role properly.

I'm thinking more along these lines:
PG: Shaq
SG: Duncan
SF: Bonner
PF: Parker
C: Jacque Vaughn
Explanation: Sign Shaq with the remainder of the MLE. Sign Vaughn for the minimum. Waive Ginobili.
Shaq brings great size and strength to the PG position. He'll be able to back down any opposing PG's with ease. Duncan's capable 3 pt shot (per Pop) will make him an excellent 2 guard. And with his height advantage he should be able to get his shot off with ease. Bonner brings a great combination of shooting stroke and size to the three and seems like a natural fit there. Vaughn will bring veteran savvy to the post while Parker's speed will make him one of the best penetrating PF's in the game. He'll be able to receive the ball outside the arc, put it on the floor, and finish at the rim unlike any PF we've ever seen.

PS: With his great size and high BBIQ, Fabricio Oberto would probably be a solid fit behind Shaq as the backup PG. Waive Hill and bring back Oberto. He already knows the system afterall.

Duncan joked that he would like to play as PG when Parker & Hill goes down to injury last season. I think Pop will finally play him there this coming season since OP states that he can shoot the 3. He can also post up smaller guards (every guard in the league for that matter). Abit like Billups. Lets do that !

I still feel that Duncan is more of a natural two than a natural one, but we can always try.
Besides, signing Shaq was a longshot anyways. Even if we did offer him the starting PG spot.

His career 19% shooting percentage from behind the arc might be a good basis for a 20% estimate.

Not the 3-point line, but there's no reason not to let Blair or Splitter or RJ work in the post with TD ready for a midrange jumper (no, not all the time, but a substantial %). TD's post game is not what it used to be, especially when he is banged up at the end of the season.

Duncan's jump shots are so horizontal on their arc that he would airball them by like three feet almost every shot.
