Fantastic news.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/29/evo-4gs-android-2-2-update-starts-trickling-out-tomorrow-loads/

For those of you who don't know the difference, Froyo is around 5 times as fast as 2.1 (Eclair). Froyo also includes the ability to store apps to external SD cards, and features FULL FLASH SUPPORT. This is an awesome, awesome update to the Evo.

Cool, I will be expecting a Hero port shortly thereafter from the Dev community. It seems that from their perspective the Hero and Evo have much in common. Cool deal. I will have Froyo on Aug. 30th!

Never mind, I lied. Just looked it up. There is a FROYO ROM for the CDMA hero now (hadn't checked in a few weeks). I really like these open source Devs doing their thing.

Hey, CH, random question, but have you had any trouble texting? There's been several times I've tried to text, I'll click on someone's name in the list of people I've recently texted, and it'll pull up someone's name 6 or 7 people down. It's kinda frustrating and a tad dangerous...seeing as how I almost called my mom a "cunt" a couple a' days ago.

Weird. I haven't. I don't use the default texting program though, as I prefer the customization capabilities of Handcent. You should check it out, maybe it'll fix your problem.

Froyo tomorrow!!!!

I still have never tried the Hotspot feature. How well does it work? I would consider cutting my mobile broadband contract and just using my Evo (I almost always have a USB cable that I can use to charge and run as a hotspot when necessary).

I am flashing and rooting my Evo today with Froyo 2.2

I'll let everyone know how it goes.

EDIT: I'll also be installing a custom kernel, it seems.

There have been no major problems I know of with the OTA update from HTC. It improves the phone in SEVERAL ways.

Full flash support.

LED Video support, superior video compression quality.

The new compiler in Android which is 5 times as fast as 2.1.

Moving apps to SD Card.

Better multitasking.

Etc.

I got it installed earlier and had trouble with Swype. I had to reinstall for it to work.

I have done any research on rooting but is there a risk for bricking? Also, are all the market apps available via download when it's rooted?

It actually makes more Market apps available, since some are for rooted phones only.

Skyfire is unnecessary to my knowledge with Froyo. I would favor the stock browser or Opera for casual browsing, and Dolphin for more intensive internet perusing.

yes but you do it at a risk. you have no idea what you are downloading. they could very well get your info and other stuff. but free is free. if you are interested try blackdroid.net just download and install the apk. you gotta allow the phone to accept third party apps. you can get the mlb app which is 15 for free.

i love opera. its so fast and most of my browsing is with text stuff not crazy graphics that would require lots of tech. the stock browser for froyo is quite good, even on my trash eris which is rooted. just overclock

Now running Netarchy's amazing toasted kernel! Getting 53 fps in game. :tu Absolutely awesome.

If anyone wants help flashing/rooting/installing a root or a kernel, I'd be more than happy to help (PM me or reply to this thread). It took me about 5-6 hours of researching to get all the files and figure it all out, but now I can do it in probably 20-30 minutes, max. And it makes the phone soooo much more powerful.

It's worth it. Although if you downloaded the OTA Froyo there is no root presently for that version.

Yes, I rather even use Launcher2 over ADW garbage.

Cry Havoc
08-08-2010, 11:48 PM
The main reasons I like ADW are the fact that it can display in landscape, and the fact that the dockbar gives me access to more programs in faster time than does Launcher Pro.

Launcher Pro definitely does look nicer though. I just like having quicker access to my most commonly used programs without having to scroll.

Yep. You have to turn "tint" on to get the icons to block out like that, though.

What is "tajm"? I'm so confused/impressed by all these home screens.

The home screens originate from custom launchers you can download. These do not require the phone to be rooted or anything of the sort, but they WILL replace your HTC Sense homescreen, so you will have to reorganize all your icons. Download one from the market, then when you press the home button, the phone will ask you which launcher you want to use after installing one of them (like ADW, launcher pro, etc). Every time you press the home button, it will again ask you which launcher you'd like to use, so if you want to go back to HTC Sense, you can, unless you check the "default" option, in which case that's the launcher your phone will use for the home key unless you change it.

The nice thing about custom launchers is obviously they provide a different look and feel to the phone, and I think look WAY less crowded and unnecessary, compared to Sense. And it can be a lot of fun to pick out a background and then move the icons around until you find a system that allows you to rapidly access all of the programs you use.

New background/theme for my phone:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/whisperingstorm/smallredcontrols.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/whisperingstorm/smallredmedia.jpg

And the landscape view, which looks much better IMO.
