What? No way.
1. NFL 2k5
2. Tecmo Super Bowl
3. Doesn't matter. Maybe NFL Blitz.
Apparently the running game is unstoppable this year in Madden. 300+ yard games are common because the blocking is so good.

Meh, you're probably right. Blitz wasn't very good, it just stuck in my mind because it was such a contrast.
#1 and #2 are irrefutable though, although you might argue for them to be switched in order.

That sucks balls. I played it online yesterday on the PS3 and didn't put in any codes. I later entered in the code that came with it but I think thats for extra shit.

From the IGN review of Madden 11:
The only negative I can say is that the boosts that are in Online Team Play should have been kept to a simple experience point leveling system. Boosts give veteran players significant attribute boosts which can really ruin the gameplay in my experience. Thankfully a player with a boost looks different than players without a boost in the lobby system, so you can steer clear of them if needed.

I could give a fuck about a video montage on a video game to be honest. I can watch ESPN for highlights. I'm not sure how it compares to last year since I didn't play last year (or the few years before that) but its been fun so far.
About to fire up some more online play. Yeah boy.

Agreed. NFL games died after 2k5, which is extremely sad. I've had Madden 11 for a couple of weeks now, it was awesome at first (as usual), new menus, back of the box features, new music, all that crap. Once you start playing the game and getting into a franchise, by the third week it becomes the same stale crap they've been putting out since they bought the license. Actually, I've never actually like Madden on the PS2/Xbox days, when they actually had much competition. It was always minor upgrades and stale gameplay.
Seems like another year of action replay on the xbox to get Fynn's editor schedule and rosters for the 2010 season.
FUCK EA SPORTS
to last post:
I agree. I don't know why anyone wastes their money and time on EA Sports, especially basketball and football. Neither has been worth a damn and was always significantly worse than the leading opposition (2k). AFAIK, only NHL and soccer are worth playing.

I love how now that ESPN and EA Sports are in bed together, although in the early 90's ESPN sued EA Sports, ESPN makes gushing blogs and promotes them on all of their big shows. Even though EA Sports has seen declining sales with Madden throughout this generation of consoles. I'm hopeful that all these fucking exclusivity contracts (MLB, NCAA & NFL) are gone by the next-gen consoles in 2013 or 2014.
Detached from the game, and the company, he created, he sometimes feels like the stepfather of his own children -- never more so than a decade ago, when he wasn't invited to a 10th-anniversary "Madden" party.
"At the anniversary party, I heard John kept asking, 'Where's Trip?'" Hawkins said with a sigh. "'Where's Trip?'"
Wow, someone should deck those suits that make millions, if not billions, off of what Trip Hawkins helped create and build in EA Sports/Madden NFL. EA Sports is big business and nothing more.

No competition agreements, as EA favors, are always evil. If EA hadn't made the agreement with the NFL when it did, 2k Games would probably be equal to or outselling Madden, because they put out a superior product.

Doubtfull. Theres too much name recognition.
I personally don't like 2K when it comes to basketball, i prefer the play and overall look by EA more.
Agreed No competition agreements are bad.
The only thing that has caught me off guard in this game neither bad nor good is how much advertising there is....

Not doubtful at all.
Sales figures from the year that Madden 05 and NFL 2k5 were released:
Video Game Sales 2004
1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2) - 5.1 million
2. Halo 2 (Xbox) - 4.2 million* includes Limited & Collector's Editions
3. Madden NFL 2005 (PS2) - 3.2 million
4. ESPN NFL 2K5 (PS2) - 1.5 million
5. Need for Speed Underground 2 (PS2) - 1.4 million
6. Pokemon FireRed (with adapter) (GBA) - 1.2 million
7. NBA Live 2005 (PS2) - 1.2 million
8. Spider-Man 2 (PS2) - 1.1 million
9. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox) - 1.1 million
10. ESPN NFL 2K5 (Xbox)- 1.0 million
So yes, Madden did move twice as many units, but considering NFL 2k5 cut into nearly 1/3rd of it's marketshare, that is a HUGE percentage considering how historically dominant Madden sales were.
Look at the previous year's sales:
Video game sales in 2003:
Rank Title Platform Publisher
1 Madden NFL 2004 PS2 Electronic Arts
2 Pokémon Ruby GBA Nintendo
3 Pokémon Sapphire GBA Nintendo
4 Need for Speed: Underground PS2 Electronic Arts
5 The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker GameCube Nintendo
6 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City PS2 Rockstar Games
7 Mario Kart: Double Dash!! GameCube Nintendo
8 Tony Hawk's Underground PS2 Activision
9 Enter the Matrix PS2 Atari
10 Medal of Honor: Rising Sun PS2 Electronic Arts
So Madden went from the most sold title on the Ps2 to the 3rd most sold game, and the 2k series of games went from not even listed to the 4th best selling game in the country. If that's not a significant change, enough to signify how much of a challenge 2k was, then why did EA sign a 1,000,000,000 (billion) dollar contract with the NFL which gave them exclusive rights to use the real players in their games? You have no reason as a company to spend a billion dollars if you aren't feeling threatened.
Go back and read the reviews. Almost every single gaming review site said that NFL 2k5 was at least slightly superior to Madden, and most of them said it was FAR and away superior. In fact, if you type a google search of NFL 2k5 vs.... what pops up? Not Madden 2005, but Madden 2010! Meaning that most people are still comparing the modern Madden to a game that's now 7 years old. If that doesn't stand as an indicator of how strongly a game stuck in the mind of sports gamers, then nothing really will.

I doubt 2k made much more money from 2004 to 2003, since the game was 30 dollars cheaper.
I never even owned a Madden game till Madden 06. I had a Dreamcast, and just kinda stayed with 2k till Madden took the rights.
2k5 is definitely some super urban legend in the world of video games. The only drastic change I noticed was the presentation was so much better. But the gameplay was not very different(Though, not a bad thing, since I liked NFL 2k's gameplay).

And how is a presentation not a major factor in a sports game?
2k5 was by far the best sports game EVER made to that point, as far as simulating the sights and sounds of a real football game. Not only that, but it was FAR above anything that had ever been produced before. Even now, several years later, nothing I've played is significantly better from a presentation and gameplay standpoint.
If they would remake it today, with HD graphics, and retain the same gameplay without the bugs, it would blow away Madden 2010 (haven't played 11 yet so I can't say).

People would complain about the running game if it were out today. I remember how easy it was to run for 300+ on that game.

So, I played a little Madden over the weekend.
It's just not great. Probably not even good. The tackling animations look like they were grafted from 2002. The player movement is jerky and not at all fluid. Some of the physics that work when tackling happens are nice, but overall this game looks and feels like a 3-4 year old game. At best.
Honestly, isn't there something wrong with the game when NFL 2k5 has better flow to the collisions on the field than Madden 2011?
Pathetic. This game isn't horrible, but it's also no better than Madden 2008. In fact, it's not much different at all. Basically some gameplay tweaks.
It's really disappointing, because I was hoping for a football game that's worthy to own this year. I'd rather not play a football game than this. It doesn't feel like even a relatively accurate recreation of football, to say nothing of a simulation.
The most hilarious thing about the situation is that NBA 2k11 will get lower scores than Madden does across the board despite being about 20 times the quality.
So far I give it a 6.5/10, and that's being pretty generous.
0YHMai--l14
Fast forward to 0:37. At :43 seconds, a help defender comes in to make a stop. Have you EVER seen a defender just fall off a man who's not moving like that? A guy with no momentum who's standing straight up, struggling to do ANYTHING, and a tackler hits him at speed and immediately becomes shed like his weight and momentum has no bearing on the play.
The physics just suck and they haven't changed them since Madden went to the Ps3/360.
U1jkeHGnqVM
7 years old and still doing it better.
k6BAdBZCMsk
r6nzoiPs6B0
Look at that. Just unbelievable. 2k5's animations aren't better by a huge margin, but they're better, IMO. LMAO at 4:00 when the cornerback on Madden manages to change speed, jump, and deflect a pass all while having his back to the QB and his head not even turned to see the ball.
That whole video is a pretty good example of why Madden is a decent football game AT BEST. I could site 15 examples from it that 2k5 still does better that EA has never bothered to correct, because they'd rather just slop the same product out every year rather than doing it right. No competition = sucks for gamers.
This game isn't even worth a 6.5. Look at the replay at 4:45 and watch the way the tight end moves his feet. Is he wearing freaking rollerblades to run that way without even moving? Basic laws of physics need not apply.
It's ridiculous that EA gets a free pass and a "9.0" every year from gaming magazines, and shows how crippled game review sites are, if not outright corrupt. No sports fan I know who's being objective would ever give Madden those kind of marks after just playing the game a single time.

In online play, your opponent can't quit the game before halftime if he/she is getting blown out and it won't count as a win for you, which is pretty lame in my opinion.
