It's understandable that a details focused coach like Pop would want role players who are not prone to make mistakes but sometimes that mindset can be a hindrance come the postseason. Given what the Spurs have had to work with from a cap standpoint they've had the opportunity to select from 2 general types of players: those who are highly skilled yet quite questionable when the intensity of a game increases and those who perhaps aren't that great fundamentally, those who don't easily fit into the prototypical mold for a specific position in the NBA but are quite competitive and will rise to the occasion come the postseason.
If you have a player who possesses both the skill and the competitiveness, well that's generally out of the Spurs' price range, unless they are a restricted free agent. But I digress.
Again and again I've seen in this forum the same arguments about how great certain players were because they weren't turnover prone or they had the requisite height for a position or they were a consistent shooter, etc.
So much for that. Who wouldn't want AD instead of Brent Barry right now? Who wouldn't want Malik Rose coming off that bench instead of the Abominable Slovenian? How about Jack in SA for the next 5 years instead of the 22 Billion Boner?
Fuck you all.

That "Fuck you all" actually made me laugh. Good stuff.
I agree with the points you make though. I remember a lot of people acting like adding Brent Barry to the 2003-2004 core would guarantee a championship. Very few people were willing to question Barry's ability to perform in the playoffs under intense pressure and there opinions were pretty much overun by rabid homers declaring that a championship was the teams destiny.
Well, the team may win a championship, but it will be more than likely despite Brent Barry, not because of.
Sad :(
Barry's moment is coming, he's playing great defense right now, he just needs to find his rhythm. All you haters just remember this thread when Barry has one of those "Steve Kerr" playoff moments.

I'm calling bullshit in AD. He didn't show us anything accept for one decent effort series against the Lakers, and wasn't the dicision maker he is now. In fact AD himself has credited the trade for shaking him up and causing him to mature as a player.
Additionally, the AD trade brought in Kerr, who was a pretty decent playoff performer himself if I remember the 2003 postseason correctly.

AD would actually compete in the playoffs. Not spend 22 minutes on the court and contribute nothing save for 1 foul. What a damn waste.
I will say this though: Barry and Radosoft have the fist-pump-while-standing-up-and-celebrating-a-great-play-by-one-of-their-teammates-manuever off the bench down pat.

Hey, I hope he does. Fuck, he's going against his old team. He should be motivated to rip them up. AD apparently got that memo.

He is not playing great defense.
Also, he was supposed to be more than Steve Kerr. Steve Kerr played a very important role in 2 games, Brent Barry was supposed to be a solid 25mpg player.

IF anyone recalls AD's last playoff series with the Spurs in 2002, someone needs to pop in the tape of Game 4 and tune into the 4th quarter, with all the little missed floaters and layups. He shriveled just like Smitty, Ferry, Parker, Bowen, Porter, and the rest of the Spurs in those 4th quarters.

At least AD continued to attack the rim. Barry never seems to find an opportunity to drive that he won't pass up.
