CARY, N.C. – Stat sheets and scouting reports are taking on new dimensions of depth and meaning for the NBA’ San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs are teaming up with SAS to use business analytics software and services for analysis of players and team performance.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

“We’re continually working to advance our performance, and analytics are critical to the equation,” said Brian Pauga, the Spurs’ Basketball Operations Assistant, in a statement. “We relish the single view that SAS provides – pulling data from multiple sources to ease our analysis and reporting.”

The Spurs will use SAS Visual Data Discovery, which can incorporate data from a variety sources into a graphic interface.

“The challenge is that information can be hard to consolidate and even harder to analyze for useful insights,” said Craig Duncan, manager of Sports and Entertainment at SAS. “With game-changing solutions from SAS, organizations like the Spurs are using statistics to create a competitive advantage.”

A particular segment of the conversation

Popovich: And now we will be talking about the +/- stat.

Coach Bud: *Oh shit*

R.C Buford: As you can see, Pop, Matt Bonner is regularly at the top of the +/- department. So, to maximize winning...

Popovich: We must play him 40 minutes?

R.C Buford: Ya.

Popovich: But I limit my players' minutes so he can only play 30 to preserve his body for the playoffs.

R.C Buford: Okay, that sounds about right. *Re-signs Bonner*

Popovich: Bud, what do you think?

Bud: I think the +/- stat is bullshit.

Everyone: *crickets*

Popovich: You are bullshit.

Bud: Yes, sir.
