:depressed RIP Daisy and Mayala.

One of two remaining tigers at the San Antonio Zoo died last week after failing to recover from a surgery for a uterine infection, zoo officials said Monday.

Malaya, a rare Sumatran tiger, died Aug. 17, three days after the death of the zoo's only giraffe, Daisy.

It pisses me the fuck off that we put animals in jail to see. Who gives a fuck if they died. We basically killed them the moment we tied them up in a net to ship 'em to jail.

As an animal lover, the whole zoo thing is hard to justify. But as a parent, a zoo is one of the most educational and magical experiences one can share with their child. I've been to a lot of zoos in this country (and out of the country as well) and for a zoo it's size, I think San Antonio's zoo is excellent.

the wildlife ranches that you drive through are a step up from zoos. (ok, barely a step up). Course you don't get the tigers & bears & stuff...

My dad used to work at the zoo when I was a baby. His friend was killed in that gorilla accident where coco killed a guy. He has a lot of scary stories about the gorillas there.

He knew Daisy and said that when ever they had babies they needed to get them on their feet ASAP, sometimes using stints so the babies will stand up or they will never stand and die. He also said giraffes weren't nice, lol.

I'll ask him about the Tigers next time I see him.

I don't care for the zoo or any place holding huge animals in cages, ie. seaworld with whales in a fish bowl. I do agree though for kids it's pretty much priceless.

There was a place in Mexico that I went to that is basically the zoo on steroids. That place was gigantic. Had dolphins but their place was part of the ocean. Their big land animals had huge tracts of land to roam with vegatation and sometimes you didn't see them cause they were some place else.

The place was called Xcaret in Cancun. Highly recommend going there and staying till close where they have a show in this beautiful stone auditorium. Show was about from the beginings of the Aztec empire, conquistadors, till the 70's. Fucking awesome.

I used to love going to the SA Zoo as a kid--always one of my favorite field trips. May not be the best in the nation, but it's still one of my all-time favorites.

i think the SA zoo is pretty good.

is it the best? No....(animal kingdom is by far the best that i have seen)

could it use improvements? of course, although without money its not going to get any better so it is good to support it so it can get better

I have been to a lot of zoos - San Antonio Zoo is okay, but they need to give some of the animals more space. When I was there, there were several giraffes and they were in a small enclosure. (Why was Daisy the only one left? What happened to the others?) They also need a better petting zoo. When I was kid, that was my favorite part of the zoo.. and the S.A. Zoo's petting section doesn't have enough animals.

And in general, they could use more monkeys and bears. But it's not bad, from a visitor's perspective.

Has anyone been to that farm/petting zoo over by 1604/Shaenfield? We are considering taking the kids there but I don't know if it's good.

The San Antonio Zoo was rated number one in the 2009 list of the 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants compiled by In Defense of Animals — a title they’ve had for the second year straight. For two years the unfortunate elephant named Lucky was kept in solitary confinement in an area too small for her. And then the zoo decided to add another elephant to the tiny space to create a “herd.”

Nope, I don't like the idea of animal jail. Yes, I see the irony in my eating meat and fully expect to be called out on it. I admit fully that it is inconsistent, my only arguement (albeit a weak one) is that I view life imprisonment as a far harsher punishment than the death penalty.

The Houston Zoo is also in the top 10 in the Country. I can understand the "animal prison" view but I know the look on my kids faces when they were young was well worth it.

I visited the San Diego Zoo this summer. They built a new elephant enclosure, that was simply amazing. You can watch as the trainers feed and bathe the elephants. We spent quite a bit of time there, watching in awe as the elephants were fed and the enjoyment of the water washing over them. It was funny to watch the elephants try and steal more food from the box. Definitely the best zoo that I've ever been to.

It's pretty sad when the population of a city doesn't realize what a gem of a zoo they have...

http://www.travellady.com/Articles/article-topzoos.html

So SA Zoo was ranked near the bottom of zoos by an animal rights group that doesn't like zoos?

Shocker... I'm amazed.

Edit: also... The plan is to update the elephant exhibit during phase 3 of Africa Live.

And somehow they missed the trainer beating the elephant at the El Paso Zoo, caught on tape! (to be fair, that beating occurred before 2009)

And that same year, SA Zoo is #6 on "Parents Magazine's Top 10 Zoos For Kids". I guess it's just a matter of personal zoo tastes.....
