Pink Floyd belongs wherever they are, well down the list. They should be well behind Neil Young, Johnny Cash and several others on the list. I don't understand this board's fascination with them. Pink Floyd is an alright band, but this notion that they're somehow near the all-time best is flat wrong.

lol at Frank Zappa not being on there.

These lists are always ridiculous, but amusing in their own way.

I saw Justin Timberlake here and almost dismissed it immediately, but thought, meh, I don't like his music or his style of music, but I can at least recognize some talent there. He's not horrible. But then I noticed he was ranked above Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Van Morrison, The Cure, and Run DMC. Figured it was time to just stop reading at that point.

Seriously? That's just laughable.

Why is Aerosmith higher than John Lennon? Why are The Kinks way down at #39? Why is Van Halen ahead of Al Green? Why is Jay-Z ranked higher than Parliament?

The VH1 lists are almost always horribly wrong, but this is easily one of the wrongest I've seen from them.

Just in terms of personal preference, I've never been a huge fan of Led Zepplin or The Who. And I think Nirvana is high (but not surprising) at #14. In general, though, the top 15 really isn't that bad. Even the bits I don't agree with there at least make sense.

From there on the whole thing just goes crazyface, though. Madonna over Queen, U2 over Marvin Gaye, The Clash, and Chuck Berry... crazyface.

This song hits home for me like no other song. I've always kind of realized how time seems to get faster and faster but now at 20 yrs old the weight of that reality has eventually become like a ton of bricks. This song represents me more than a marilyn manson song could represent a gothic kid. My favorite lines are from 3:07-3:24.

...not to mention the guitar solo gives me chills (please. this is not a "post my fav song thread". i was just wondering who else has gone through this realization)

Speaking of genres, is Johnny Cash the only good country music singer that ever existed? He is not even the best one IMO.

I'm not too bent out of shape over the list and how weird and so seemingly wrong some of the rankings, inclusions, and omissions are. Justin Timberlake definitely threw me when I saw his name. Whoever participated in the poll seemed to really touch mostly the mainstream and popular artists. And sometimes when you make lists of rankings, someone just slips your mind. It's like making a list of top NBA small forwards and forgetting Carmelo Anthony. And you look at someone else's list and you're like, "how the hell did I forget him." I'm sure some of the people voting wish they could re-do their list in retrospect.

You guys have already mentioned most of the weird rankings and omissions, but I'll add a few. Like I said, seems like most of the artists are mainstream or at least commercially successful. For me, it's a shame when a list like this fails to include Miles Davis, The Meters, Nina Simone, Wu-Tang (when there are other rap artists on the list), Stevie Ray Vaughnn, Garth Brooks, any other Motown artists other than Marvin and Stevie like the Temptations, Four Tops, Supremes, or Smokey and the Miracles, Sachmo or Ella or Duke Ellington because of what I can only guess is that those artists slipped their minds. Seems like the majority of artists listed were mainstream artists from mainstream genres who had commercial success. What about Carlos Santana? And it's a crying shame to see Curtis Mayfield all the way down at #84 when he blows away almost everyone on the list as a pure musician, but at least he's listed and not forgotten like some others.

But I guess it's just a matter of opinion...

So if the first 5 are in alphabetical order, that means it's essentially a 5-way tie for 1st place? Hmmm, and Bob Dylan is there but Elvis isn't? Seems like someone just sat around naming as many artists as they could off the top of their head.

I think they listed the top 5 alphabetically because they didn't yet want to divulge what the order is so we have to wait for the actual VH1 special when it's aired.

Anyway back on topic...I like where Nirvana's at but think Pearl Jam should have a better spot..

Yeah, Pearl Jam was way too low. They should be in the Top 50. Maybe not ranked high, but definitely in the Top 50 if Coldplay is on this list. Pearl Jam was much better in their prime than Coldplay could hope to be.

A friend of mine was telling me her bf said Pearl Jam was a superior band to Nirvana and he couldn't understand why people loved Nirvana more than Pearl Jam. She's a huge Nirvana fan like me.

I basically said that while I love Pearl Jam, Nirvana was much more powerful. Jeremy is probably PJ's best, most powerful song. But not a single PJ song was emotionally raw like Nirvana was. Not only that, but Nirvana could be melancholy or aggressive. Pearl Jam didn't have the emotional range that Nirvana had, even though PJ songs are technically sound and more diverse.

It's basically the Rolling Stones to Beatles argument, but the light version. Those were the two most influential bands of the 90s.

Nathan Explosion
08-27-2010, 10:24 PM
rofl yeah they changed the way he looks at life or something, which is almost as gay as ATRAIN digging deep for the meaning of life thru Korn songs as an angst ridden teen.

Korn wasn't giving you the meaning of life, just making some teens feel like someone understands them.

"Clown" was a powerful song to someone considered an outcast. When "Here to Stay" came out, it vocalized exactly what was going on in my life at the moment (having two best friends fucking with me and just pulling me in different directions).

I wouldn't say the songs were life changing, just very good.

Significant Other was a very good album considering the source. Limp Bizkit was a flash in the pan band, but Significant Other was almost too good to be made by Fred Durst.

Nathan Explosion

Alice in Chains shits all over Nirvana, why the fuck are they ranked so high? And Floyd should be in the top 5 at least, same thing with Queen.

Alice in Chains had some fame, but Nirvana took their fame to another level. Pearl Jam needed Nirvana. Soundgarden had some fame but blew up because of Nirvana.

Nirvana was the catalyst that allowed so many other bands to blow up.

Having said that, Alice in Chains couldn't hold a candle to anything Nirvana produced.

You are obviously a delusional Nirvana fanboy if you think that's true.

Nirvana is garbage compared to AiC. Layne Staley destroys Kurt Cobain vocally and Jerry Cantrell is a shit ton better than Cobain at guitar. Only edge they have is Grohl imo. Nirvana is the mainstream crap that wishes it could be Alice in Chains.

With any discussion of music you need to set boundaries, agree upon parameters. Else everyone keeps dancing around semantics like in this thread.

But anyone in their mid 20s or older should realize by now that radio has completely destroyed Nirvana, whereas that effect is not as intense with Pearl Jam.

Anything else you say is guesswork over kurt cobain. I highly highly doubt that Nirvana would still be in the game like Pearl Jam is. And you can not help but respect Pearl Jam for their acting on their foresight of where the whole "grunge" thing was headed. They went from stage center to road less traveled over the course of like one month.

If MJ were still alive and didn't crack the top 5, it would be because he was a weirdo and an alleged child molester and some people would have a problem giving him his due.

As an artist, Michael is every bit deserving of being considered the second "top" music artist. Whether he's better than Zeppelin to any particular individual is a matter of taste. So just as you might take Zeppelin over Michael, my taste is Michael over Zeppelin. But it's just individual musical taste.

That's what all these lists and rankings are. Subjective taste. But it's not like Michael doesn't have the record sales or obvious impact on music to back up his ranking. He does. And then some. You could argue he's the greatest musical artist of all time.

I didn't read most of the thread but it's on right now and the host mentioned that other artists voted on it saying that MJ was number one on the ballots of musicians like P. Diddy and others.

- VH1's ratings are in the toilet. This list should be viewed as a publicity-seeking ratings grab, not an attempt at objective music criticism.

- Jerry Garcia and/or Grateful Dead belong somewhere on the list. But VH1 probably didn't have enough stock footage in their archive to give them a slot.
