How can you put Layne on this list? He stopped making music. And Kurt died about 3-4 years too late.

I knew either you or redzero would say Ian Curtis, but tbh I had my money on redzero. Ian Curtis is such the easy indie hipster douche answer.

It was on 500 days of summer, so it has to be hipster.

Just never saw you mention them, so was wondering. Better than the Smiths to me. Most people like The Smiths more, though.

Jimmie Rodgers was only 35 when he died of T.B. He was so influential in his short life that countless artists were jacking his singing style and doing there best to claim his top spot in the music industry. It's a tragedy that he died so young, but he took advantage of the situation and recorded some of his best work from his deathbed.

80 years later, you can still here his influence in modern music.

I believe there will be a documentary on him coming out sometime this year. Can't say I was a huge fan of his "grunge" period, but the guy had a hell of a voice, and made some original music during the pop music doldrums of the early 90s.

He's tough. He certainly died before his time, but I think his contribution to music had happened long before he died. Just my opinion. I could just as easily say Alex Chilton, but he was in the same boat.
