Haddadi is huge and could probably play in the NBA if the politics were different.

Splitter looks like a smart player -- H's size and physicality got to Splitter at first but S. adjusted and came back with some up und under moves. He's got a lot in his bag of tricks. That should bode well for him in the NBA.

here you go

ISTANBUL (AP) — Guilherme Giovannoni scored 17 points, Tiago Splitter and Leandro Barbosa added 13 apiece, and Brazil beat Iran 81-65 on Saturday in its first game at the world championship.
Marcelo Huertas added 10 points for Brazil, which was without Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao, who injured an ankle during exhibition action and isn't expected to play until the Brazilians face the United States on Monday.

The Brazilians are already without another injured NBA big man, forward Nene, but they still have Splitter, the MVP of Spain's ACB League last year who is headed to the San Antonio Spurs.

Center Hamed Haddadi of the Memphis Grizzlies scored 16 points for Iran, the Asia champions making their debut in the worlds.

Tiago improved in the second half. Brazil ran some plays for him and he took advantage. He did a nice job holding on to Haddadi though I do think he did a poor job protecting the rim. Not a lot to gather from this game, the one against US should be much more informative.

I think Splitter looks ready for the NBA. He'll probably get caught for a few moving screens until the officials get to know him. He does have a knack on screen/rolls at keeping the screened player slightly out of the play.

He's an NBA starter, if Pop chooses to do so.

http://projectspurs.com/2010-articles/august/world-championship-updates-on-splitter-de-colo-and-javtokas.html

Written by Jeff Garcia

The 2010 FIBA World Championship kicked off today in Turkey and for San Antonio Spurs fans, eyes were on Brazil, France and Lithuania as Tiago Splitter, Nando de Colo and Robertas Javtokas played for their respective countries.

Here is how they did today in their opening round games.

de Colo:

Though the French national team pulled off the upset to defeat Spain, the defending World Champions, de Colo had a game to forget.

He played in the first half but did not see action in the second half. He drew the tough defensive assignment to guard Spain's Ricky Rubio but it was the Spanish defense on de Colo which seemed to throw him off his game.

Though he did show flashes of aggressiveness going to the rim in the first quarter when he drove strong into the lane against Spain's Marc Gasol but missed the shot.

He finished the game scoreless, got one steal which led to an easy score for France and drew a charge on the defensive end.

Javtokas:

Javtokas did not have a good game as well as Lithuania faced New Zealand. He played four minutes, shot 50% from the field, grabbed one rebound, had one blocked shot and scored two points.

Splitter:

Splitter had the tough assignment of guarding Iran's big man Hamed Haddadi who also plays for the Memphis Grizzlies. On two occasions, Haddadi blocked Splitter's shot attempts.

Splitter did show an all around game which should bring a smile to Spurs fans next season. He used his body well in the paint to get to the basket and even picked up the "and 1" in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Splitter showed he can pass out of the paint when he found a Brazilian player at the opposite end of the court for an easy score. He also showed a knack for getting steals and scored most of his points in the paint.

At the half he scored seven points.

In the third quarter, Splitter showed he can run on the break and got a slam-dunk for Brazil but he continued to have the tough defensive assignment on Haddadi.

In the fourth quarter, Splitter had a huge dunk off a fast break and in the next play he ran the floor for an easy lay-up on a Brazil fast break.

What he showed was he can run up the court on fast breaks, cut to the rim, footwork in the paint and is constantly moving around the basket.

He finished the game with 13 points, shot 60% from the field, made 1/1 free-throws, grabbed four rebounds, had one assist, one steal and had one blocked shot in 23 minutes of play.

Both teams are shooting like crazy (%), so I think it is just the type of game. SLO looks very energetic and that seems to be the difference in the game.

Tiago, even though he is not playing well seems to have the "winner mentality", kind of like Manu. It is hard to pin point, but his attitude and game just seems that way.

As much as I hate to see Barbosa on the floor for Brazil, he is still there best option for a W..There back up players do not seem to be very good and none can do anything except shoot spot up 3's. Barbosa is Brazil's only wing player (and maybe the pg) who can create his own shot

everyone knows that anderson is a defensive player - finishing no 1 in charges drawn some years ago. as we saw today (again) splitter is a good offensive option; however, we have to wait and see how his defense on nba players looks like. i am hoping for a performance similar to an average starting center - because his offense is a little better than that.

Barbosa has talent, but damn he looks bad as a main option/ facilitator. He had so many ill advised off-balance jumpers, especially for someone who is a poor jump shooter as is.
Looking at both Barbosa and Splitter, you would have no idea that Barbosa is the player of the two who has years of NBA experience, in fact, it appeared the opposite. When Anderson V. came in, Splitter was the better player of the two by leaps and bounds. Anderson ended up getting in the way on offense crowding the paint unreasonably and making interior defense easier on SLOV. Both Barbosa and Varrejo (sp?) fill a niche in the NBA that has prospered for thier teams, the Suns and Cavs respectively. I can only imagine Splitter doing the same for the Spurs in a positive way, albeit in a much different, respectable way than the two.
I don't know the intentions of the coaching staff for Brazil, but if the ball came Splitters way a few more times in that game you had to believe they could have pulled that one out. SLOV had no answer for him at the block other than double-team, and even then he efficiently passed out or moved his feet to draw fouls.
I would expect his Box score in the NBA to be very similar to the FIBA averages, however proportionally limited to the minutes he gets from Popp. In otherwords 9-12 points per hitting a high percentage, and solid defense although not dominant defense.

What is this shit from nba.com??... They think we are fucking Jordania or what... We were the favourites in this game even without our best players on the team.

If they think that a team with Barbosa (one man sucker), Varejao (flopping bitch) and Splitter is great something is wrong with them... But I must say that that 35 year old tree point shooter was great. One bad ass clutch shooter.
