Fifa world player of the year (when there's a WC):

1994: 1st Romario, 2nd Stoichkov
1998: 1st Zidane, 2nd Ronaldo
2002: 1st Ronaldo, 2nd Kahn
2006: 1st Cannavaro, 2nd Zidane

Messi won't have it. All the winners went to the finals.

It's beetween Forlan (who was the FIFA WC best player), Sneijder, Xavi, Iniesta

But in none of those years, there was an individual player with so much consensus as the best player in the world like Messi right now, Messi didn't won CL or the WC but he still had a hell of a year (IMO, his best individual year yet) he was the Golden boot of all of Europe and carried Barcelona for long stretches of the season without Xavi and/or Iniesta. I still think Messi wins it but by a much smaller margin than last year.

IMO the top three will be:

1- Messi
2- Forlan
3- Sneijder

lol what? Read what you say. Messi has won multiple championships with Barca, and in complete dominating fashion last season, so the no rings lebron comparison is off.

And just because he doesn't have a great game in EVERY big game does not warrant saying he chokes in major games.

December 2009 - scored winning goal in the final of the club world cup vs Estudiantes
Last spring - scored 2 goals vs Stuttgart to secure Barca to quarterfinals of Champs League
Last spring - in the next champs league game vs. Arsenal, scored 4 goals
Last spring - goal vs. Real Madrid, Barca wins el clasico 2-0
Scored shit load of goals this past year in back to back games, etc etc etc

And this is just the past few months. So sure, he didn't score in the world cup, but saying he chokes in big games is just bullshit, because it's simply not true.

I'm a big Xavi fan (IMO he's the best playmaker and second best overall behind Messi), but he didn't have a WC at the level he's used to play, from the Spanish team alone Villa, Iniesta and even Busquets had a better WC than him.

If FIFA is going to give the player of the year award based just on the WC performances, then the discussion can only be between Forlan and Sneijder.

LMAO "based just on WC performances..." Sneijder was an integral part of Inter's Champions League campaign, as Forlan was with Athletico's Europa League win. Without either of them, neither team wins anything. Not to mention their (MUCH) better performances than Messi in the WC. Barca just won the crappy La Liga, and thanks in large part to his brilliant teammates.

Put down whatever you're smoking, Messi is not going to win player of the year this year

Where did I say that Sneijder and Forlan didn't have good seasons outside the WC? (although Forlan did have a subpar "La liga" tournament for his standards)

I just said that if we only use the WC to determine the FIFA world player then the winner should be either Forlan or Sneijder, 'cause they were the two best players of the tournament, not that the only good thing they did all season was their performance in the WC (Sneijder had an excellent season all around).

I know that you have something against Argentines, but at least try to read well a comment before starting one of your xenophobic rants.

Nowadays there are no teams that can face them, but '95-'05 there were many great teams (Celta de Vigo, Real Sociedad, Valencia, Deportivo, Atlético de Madrid, Mallorca...) and people were much more excited.

I agree. He's too zoned in on goals alone,he needs to take a page out of Messi's book and do a little more creating the goals will come. I mean how many goals does he have like 12 already. The Madrid newspapers have been saying the same thing about Ronaldo

Are you talking about Barca's second, Messi's first? That's the one I'm talking about, IMO those "1,2" passes between Messi and Pedro were great, specially because of the little space they had to make them.

Yes, we're talking about the same goal. I don't think that this one-two work between Messi and Pedro was as sharp as they are able to play it. Villarreal's defenders definitely had a chance of interrupting it. But in the end, Messi's finish was world class, and so it was a beautiful goal.

I agree that Barca is not unbeatable, but it's very hard to do. And this year's team is better than last year's. But one thing I will say about all of these huge clubs like Barca and Real, Inter and AC Milan...is that it's not too amazing when they win trophies. It's not something the players should be extremely proud about due to how fucking stacked so few teams are. Obviously it isn't their fault, but I just think soccer is ridiculous sometimes when teams get THIS strong...like Madrid or Barca currently. I largely overlook Barca's situation because their current players as we all know were developed in their youth academy, and they've been able to keep them all around, except for Cesc Fabregas.

How much glory is their winning via spending more money than everyone? When you look at Madrid's entire team, not just starting 11 for any given game, it's an amazing squad, loaded with stars, ALREADY currently has many of the best attacking players in the world..and they want to add another striker? So Higuain is out for a few more months, fine, but Ronaldo, Di Maria, Ozil, Kaka, and Benzema as a temporary striker in the absence of Higuain is not enough???

I'm not particularly trying to attack Madrid, just using them as an example. Also, Chelsea struggles for a while and all of a sudden they want Torres? It's just laziness, greed, that make it kind of stupid. Winning La Liga if you're madrid or barca has become one of the easiest things to do in sports. Both clubs know the real tournament is really just beating the other team in the few head-to-heads per year.

I agree

That's why I wish there was a salary cap in soccer (and in baseball)

Good point about Barca too; unlike Madrid, they can develop young players within their own academy

Fuckin Madrid......it's Barca's title race to lose now.

I realistically didn't expect Mourihno to win la liga in his first season (maybe next season if he stays). He's got to focus on domestic cups and CL now.

Benzema is just terrible....he'll give you a goal and then play like he's got diarrhea....running around shitting himself...truly pathetic for a striker at such a big club

Chicharito has already made more of a difference in Europe than any Mexican abroad ever not named Sanchez or Marquez, so he's not overrated. And the English media pressures players 1000x times more than Mexican media, and he's been doing just fine.

And which Mexican media said that Dos Santos would be another Ronaldinho? From what I have been hearing (since the Barcelona days), neither El Norte (Monterrey newspaper), TV Azteca, Televisa, nor ESPN Deportes have ever said he'd be the next dinho. Not even Mexicans, they (we) all think he's been a fucking bust.

Pandiani: Ronaldo has 'screw loose'
February 3, 2011

Osasuna striker Walter Pandiani has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo "has a screw loose" in the wake of their verbal spat in Real Madrid's shock loss on Sunday.

Pandiani was reportedly left furious after Madrid star Ronaldo sarcastically asked the Uruguayan striker during the match how much he earned, a taunt which Pandiani allegedly responded to by instead naming the trophies he has won in Spain.

Pandiani had the last laugh as his side's victory on the night left Real's title hopes clinging by a thread but while he refused to recount what was said on the pitch, he has this week decided to put Ronaldo in his place.

"You have to be more humble," Pandiani told reporters. "When he wins the Super Cups, the King's Cups that I have in Spain, then maybe I will listen to him."

Pandiani said Ronaldo should act more like Barcelona star Lionel Messi - "the best in the world" - if he wants the respect of fellow professionals, while also suggesting the former Manchester United star's match-winning ability comes with the side-effect of over-confidence.

"As a footballer he is a phenomenon but to do the things he does, maybe he has a screw loose. With his gestures and his cocky way of acting, he is the one who creates all the problems every weekend."

Meanwhile, Real set up a Copa del Rey clasico final against Barcelona on Wednesday by beating Sevilla 2-0 at the Bernabeu to secure a 3-0 aggregate victory. Real coach Jose Mourinho said he was looking forward to a worthy decider, which will give his side the chance to avenge the stunning 5-0 thrashing handed out by the champions in the league this season.

"It is great to see two rivals meet in the final," Mourinho told Marca. "We had our difficulties, and this has hurt us throughout January. We paid the price, but have receovered enough to progress to the final. It has all been worth it because we are now in the Copa final.

"April 20 is a little strange for the final. We will now focus on the Copa later in the season. It was important for us not to lose control of this evening's match, and the goals gave us peace of mind. We have had a good competition, which tested us with a Madrid derby."
:rollin
:lmao

LOL @ being stacked as fuck, talking trash, and losing to Osasuna. Madrid are the biggest clowns in the world lmao spending the most money in order to win nothing and look like shit bags.

Where do you guys all think Ronaldo is going to transfer to next? I would be extremely surprised if he doesn't leave Real in the next 3 years as he will be tired of being in the same liga as Messi. My bet is that he's going to invent some fallout or argument with executives or the coach (if Mourinho isn't there anymore) and leave for England or Italy.

Watching that Barca game points out how amazing they are. They weren't spectalular from an individual POV relative to their standards(except maybe Abidal who was excellent filling in in central D), yet won 3-0, and were quite clearly the better side for every bit of the match except for about 5 minutes at the start of second half, and Barca were cruising at 2-0 then.

Real Madrid are a good team, but as long as Barcelona are there with the team they have, Madrid will never win the La Liga title no matter how hard they try. Jose seeks to outdo 'best loser'

Jose Mourinho has praised Manuel Pellegrini as a "good coach" ahead of Real Madrid's meeting with Malaga on Thursday but said finishing second with a club-record 96 points last season only made him the "best loser".

Pellegrini endured a difficult 2009-10 campaign, losing out to Barcelona by three points in La Liga despite winning 31 of their 38 games as well as suffering a humiliating Copa del Rey defeat to Alcorcon as well as exiting the Champions League to Lyon in the second round.

He left the club in the summer and has since taken charge of relegation-threatened Malaga, and although Mourinho expects to take three points after the 0-0 draw with Deportivo at the summer, he has offered words of encouragement to the Chilean.

"We'll have to win against Malaga and we will have to take risks," he said. "Malaga are a good team. (CROFL...are they really, faggot?) They have experienced players and a good coach. I'm practically sure they won't be relegated this year.

"Manuel Pellegrini had a good run in La Liga with Real Madrid last year and I expect the crowd to greet him well. The door to our dressing room is open for him."

Mourinho said Madrid's 100% home record "does not guarantee we'll win again" but added: "We have to win tomorrow. We played with many forwards for 30 minutes against Deportivo and 15 minutes with three defenders. We have to win and must take risks."

In spite of his praise, Mourinho suggested Pellegrini had fallen short of expectations during his year at the Bernabeu.

"In my philosophy, finishing second just makes you the best loser," he said. "Pellegrini told the truth to some degree when he said that Madrid did pretty well last year.

"The fact is, though, that making it past the first round of the Copa del Rey and surviving the first knock-out round in the Champions League is enough for me to do better than him (ehh..really faggot? Marginal difference, you're still not winning a single trophy this year). We've already done better in the cup and things are looking good in the Champions League as well, even though we can still be beaten by the team that defeated Madrid last year.

"I have my own opinion on last year's La Liga performance. You're just the best of the rest when you finish second. It's the same when you finish ten points behind the champions but score 500 goals. You're still only number two."

Pellegrini, responding to the remarks in his press conference, said: "I have no comments to make on the opinion of a friend. I am very proud to coach Malaga and the situation I am in. I have no problems coaching this team, and I am very proud of it.

"I am the Malaga coach, and I do not intend to comment on the opinions of colleagues. I have nothing against Mourinho or Real Madrid. When I see everyone I will say hello and I will offer my hand to Mourinho."

He added: "We have everything to win and plenty to lose, but my biggest motivation to win is not Mourinho but Malaga. There are three points up for grabs against a great rival who is having an excellent season."

Meanwhile, Mourinho stressed his support for Kaka, who has been linked with a return to AC Milan after failing to produce his best form in Madrid.

"Kaka hasn't played for six months, but it has actually been longer because he hasn't been in optimum form for a year and half," Mourinho said. "He relies on his talent and speed, which doesn't make this situation easy for him. I didn't expect him to be the Ballon d'Or winner he was as soon as he recovered.

"He is going through a natural process and we must continue to support him. He is a fantastic guy and a great player. We must be patient and allow him to work with no pressure. I don't put any pressure on him."

What's the deal with Racing Santander's coach? He made a mind-baffling move against Real Madrid to have one of his defenders (Pablo Pinillos) take a PK against Casillas... one who had missed 3 of his last 4 PK attempts!!! Completely deflated the team when he missed (once again... and horrendously at that) the opportunity to tie Real Madrid at 2-2...

That's twice within the last few weeks that Giovani Dos Santos pulls a brilliant maneuver in the penalty box, is tackled just as he is about to shoot, only to have the coach opt in favor of his veteran defenders for the PK shot...

Barcelona's Abidal diagnosed with liver tumor (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/laliga/story/Barcelona-defender-Abidal-diagnosed-with-liver-tumor)

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has been diagnosed with a liver tumor and will undergo surgery on Friday.

The Spanish club made the announcement late Tuesday and gave no indication on how long the France international will be sidelined.

Abidal received various messages of support from teammates and opponents alike through Twitter.

''I'd like to show all my affection and support for Eric Abidal from here. I'm confident everything will be all right,'' Barcelona playmaker Andres Iniesta wrote. ''He deserves it, he's a great guy!''

Cesc Fabregas, whose Arsenal side was recently eliminated from the Champions League by Barcelona, wrote it was ''bad news for football'' and sent Abidal ''a lot of support and a lot of strength.''

Real Madrid's Kaka also wrote: ''What sad news about Eric Abidal, tumor in the liver! Let's all pray for him.... God Bless!''

The 31-year-old Abidal joined Barcelona at the beginning of the 2007-2008 season.

He has been a key figure for Barcelona this season, playing 33 games and filling in recently at center back for the injured Carles Puyol.

League leader Barcelona is five points ahead of Madrid in the Spanish standings.
