Look, there is a girl at work who thinks we are friends, tries to talk to me all of the time about her kids. One day she was trying to show me printed pictures of her newborn that she had already shown me on a cell phone. I politely told her that I was not interested in seeing them. When she inquired as to why, I politely (and more tactfully) told her that I don't care. I then clarified that it wasn't just her kids, that I really don't care about anyone's kids. Confused, she pointed out that I had kids, and I told her that, indeed, I do and I am very proud, but I don't talk to ANYBODY about them unless asked because most people just wait for you to finish the story, say something like "that's darling" and get on to whatever it was that they were thinking about while you were telling your story. She doesn't talk to me about her kids anymore, and she still thinks we are friends (she is a complainer, who is not interested in solutions, which is why I don't like being around her). I could have just yelled at her, made fun of her developmentally challenged son and insulted the circumstances in which the newborn was brought into this world. This would have stopped her from talking to me altogether, but for a variety of reasons (one being that I am an intelligent human) I used tact. (it is not the kids fault the mom sucks)

I have always found it amusing that when people lack the ability to use or the understand the usefulness of tact, they hide behind the "oh well I am just honest no matter what the ramifications." Those that I have encountered (which is not to say "all of them") are generally more withdrawn from society. No Consideration (hidden as "total honesty) = isolation (in the cases I have encountered). I wonder why that is.
