The Apple TV actually looks like a damn good product now. If it ran apps like Air Video or had native MKV support it would be ideal, but I may get one for the Netflix support alone (and when it's hacked to play MKV's over the network). Plus $99 is a very nice price. I don't really care about the Nano, but the Touch got a sweet upgrade, and AirPlay is gonna be awesome.

Not really. It still can only do 720p tops and now it supports even less video formats. Less hackable being that's iOS, so you can't really just load Perian on it like older boxes.
The fact that you need to transcode your shit is a time waster. My popcorn hour A-110 is older than dirt, but supports 1080p and reads everything you throw at it.

converting stuff isn't much of a hassle for me, i can queue stuff up in air video for conversion from my phone from work and just add it to itunes when i get home. i wouldn't be surprised if someone found a way around it. i download 720p mkvs anyway, i guess it would depend on how long it took to convert them, but you would know better than i. it would just be nice to be able to stream something wirelessly for $99 instead of having one of my roomates use my comp and fuck up my second display output while i'm watching something in my living toom.

No netflix or wireless, and I can't push pics, music or video directly from my phone to it.

I always forget about netflix because I don't use it. Sorry. I went straight for the LIVE because that is what I use and it works wonderfully. If you got the PLUS (120) it supports netflix and as far as pushing pictures, I am not quite sure what you mean, but if you have an Iphone there is apparently an app to make it DLNA compliant, then you could access all of the media on your iphone from the WD's network shares interface.
But now that apple has something, I guess that will work for you. I just really like my WD, so I generally have to tell people about it.

You can push pics, music or video to the Apple TV wirelessly from an iPhone. I didn't use Netflix for about a year, but got it recently cause I can stream to my phone now and split the $9 a month with two roomates. The WD is a nice little box but not quite what I want. I have my PC connected to my TV already, so cutting out the cable would be nice.

Yeah, I hated having just a random wire hanging out from behind my TV to plug into my laptop. Its so much more convenient having this DMA all hooked up already.
As far as the push part, I think its a wash since you can make your phone DLNA compliant and access that media anyway, the only difference here is which device do you use to access that content, (appletv - phone, WD - remote control).
I am sure that someone will come out with a jailbreak for the appleTV and you will be able to have mkv playback as well as flv playback (I am assuming that it won't play flv as well)
