Scola is a great FIBA player. He should do well unless he chokes like he always did in Europe.

And I damn hope Argentina will loose. While I like most of their player, I have an illogical pure hate for Prigioni. I can't root for a team where he plays.Without him, I would have root for Argentina.

Hopefully Splitter guards Scola. Luis hasn't really had a 7 foot defender on him at Splitter's level. And Scola is a good, tough defender that will test Splitter as well. Can't wait for that game.

They were teammates and are best friends. I am sure both are very familiar with guarding each other. awesome matchup

i would like argentina to win the game. mostly b/c the winner may have to play 2-3 more games for either 5th spot, 3rd spot or the championship. i prefer splitter to have an extra week of break before reporting to training camp. we already saw him do well vs. usa

Kristic guarded him today and he scored 32.

The game will be close but Barbosa will wind up shooting and missing fade away 3's, and bricking wide open shots as always, Argentina will win.

Not looking so good for Splitter 3 years ago. Nene got hurt and Varejao never played. Probably a good idea to put Varejao on Scola.

I think Brazil will win. Argentina has been basically playing at times very lazy and the coaching has been inexistent. They play to the competition's level, like to get in some hole and then scrap back. Happened with Serbia today and they just couldn't crawl out of it.

They're a very talented team, even more talented than Brazil, I believe. But Prigioni is not Sanchez, and more importantly Hernandez is a pretty subpar coach. Unless Scola and Delfino both go off or Brazil has an off night, I think Brazil will move on, and it might be a good wakeup call for Argentina. You can't half-ass it against good teams.

Croatia-Serbia and Argentina-Brasil.
That's pretty interesting.

IF the Argies don't get some type of contribution from Delfino (he really looked washed up last night) AND Oberto, Brazil is going to win, no matter how many points Scola will score.
It's going to be fun to watch Prigioni and Huertas going at each other.
Smart, smart PGs.
I'd place them in the class of Billups and Becirovic in terms of BB IQ.

This.

With the low level of competition and sub-par teams that are defining Turkey it's more likely what it would have happened.

Also, Scola will outperform Tiago on every category but Brazil will win the game, UNLESS Delfino shows up in Manu form and kills them.

Yes.
Spain misses Calderon and Gasol (in that order),
the US is young and weak upfront (but lucky they don't call all those travellings),
Serbia and Lithania are also young,
Brazil has Barbosa,
Slovenia will come up short as usual (no lack of talent, though)
and the Refs will stop carrying the Turks, come the Semis.

It looks like Manu has missed the chance to win his last title....

I bthink Brazil can win if Splitter and Guillerme play together. IMO Varejao should come off the bench. Guillerme outside shooting compliments Splitter inside game and his constant movement. Varejao messes up the offensive momentum with Splitter on the floor.

When Varejao was hurt Brazil played better. Barbosa's offensive lapses will hurt the against Argentina-a team that never stops working and scoring.

I hope Brazil wins against Argentina mainly because that means Splitter would have done a great job against Scola.

...Splitter is plain and simply not on the same level as Scola. If per chance he ends up with the better stat line, it's not because he's a better player but just because he had a better outing on that day. It is what it is...

ARG - Scola: "If we have Oberto at his best, then he can be extremely important for us."

ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) - Luis Scola knows that he and Argentina will face their biggest challenge at the FIBA World Championship when they take on Brazil tonight.

Scola, who has been an inspiration for his country for the last decade, is leading the tournament in scoring with an average of 29 points per game. Argentina won their opening four games in Group A before conceding their first defeat of the tournament in an 84-82 loss to Serbia.

FIBA: Luis, how satisfied are you with your performance and Argentina's display so far?

Scola: "As any player that has an ego, I enjoy having a starring role but I am also aware that it's not a good thing. What I would like is for us to play the game differently, that it is more level within the team, that we can try out other options and that those are shared. I believe that would allow us to win all the games we would play."

FIBA: Manu Ginobili and Andres Nocioni are among some of Argentina's absentees in this tournament. Is it good that so much depends on you and Carlos Delfino this summer?

Scola: "I hope we can play as a team and so far, we have struggled at this World Championship. It's a very dangerous approach to wait for someone to be inspired on the day and have a great individual game. It may happen, it may not. I always think the best teams are those that win when they play badly because it's easier to win when you play well. When the shots go in and the plays you practised are executed, then it's much easier to win. What I would like is to see is that the team plays solid because then it is easier to guarantee wins."

FIBA: The good news is that Fabricio Oberto is on the road to recovery and may play against Brazil having been out of the tournament since Argentina's opening triumph against Germany with a stomach flu.

Scola: "Fabricio is very important to us. He has already proved that. We also need him to have another player available to help the team, to have another option. But we want the best Fabricio possible. He has to feel well and I believe he is on the road to recovery. Twenty years ago if a top player was not 100% he could still make a difference in a game, but nowadays if a player is not in top condition, you will be passed over by a rival player. If we have Oberto at his best, then he can be extremely important for us us."

Scola is the focal point of Argentina's attack. Splitter goes long stretches without getting the ball on offense.

Scola is a more accomplished scorer at this point in their careers, but it's a little unfair to compare their numbers as Argentina doesn't have a ball hog guard (Barbosa) that jacks up shots before the team has any chance to get into the offense.

How many times do you see Splitter get the ball in the post? Maybe two times a game. How many off balance, bad shots do you see Barbosa take? If Splitter got some of the shots Barbosa was wasting, he'd probably have numbers closer to Scola's.

They just showed the top 10 passes of the season, and Ginobili's running one-handed catch (from Jefferson) and behind-the-back pass to a trailing DeJuan Blair came in at 3rd, though I thought it was better than both #2 and #1.

The odd thing was that NBATV apparently considered it amazing enough to show it 3 times, while the others (including #1 and #2) were only shown twice.

I think many here have way too high expectations for Splitter specially on offence witch is far from ready to succeed at NBA level.
He has good hands can catch passes and can also pass very well for a big. He's also good setting screens and rolling witch is good for the Spurs offence, he may become a good weapon on pick n roll offence specially with Manu setting good screens just like Oberto use to do when they played together.

Also RC compare him to Varejão in the first place as to what they were expecting him to do in the NBA and it's not like he's going to get a lot of shots on the Spurs too.

Defence and good rebounding it's what the Spurs need from him tbh and that's what I want to see if he has. Don't care much about his offence at this point because I'm not really expecting a lot from him.

It's not what he can do for the Rockets, it's what he could have done for us.

well thats why I brought up 2008 he would of helped us beat the Lakers not sure if he would of helped us beat the Celtics...2009 Ginobili was injured so wouldn't have really bothered may have won the series against the mavs or extend that series...2010 suns shooters and guards caused us alot more problems then us scoring

I still think Splitter will be the better player(5 years younger) for the spurs of course Scola will always be the better scorer but Splitter I believe will still be the all around better player
Scola 6 years ago (1 year younger than current Splitter) was Europe best PF overall, and was the co-MVP (with Manu) of the Olympic games, having 25 pts and 11 rebounds in the title game....

I SERIOUSLY doubt that current 10 pts of Tiago (or 13 ppg in this tournament) can be compared to the 24 year old Scola performance (and he had thought competition to score there).....

Scola was 20/10 PF after the Landry trade...and that after Brooks and Ariza hogging the ball....

You'd better share the stuff yuo smoke if you think Splitter can be realistically compared to Scola....

Thank you guys from the bottom of our hearts......Scola plays great as a leader of a team and as a role player, that is rare.

VIVA SCOLA !!

DD

he's a litte more than a role player. otherwise why pay a role player 50 million?

Scola makes $10 mil/year and Splitter makes $3 mil/year.... This isn't surprising..... Do people not understand this?

Upon entering a Scola thread, understanding and comprehension are best left at the door.

Yeah, it sucks. It was a big mistake. When you make moves for financial reasons and not basketball reasons, they end up with the potential to bite you in the ass big time.

But it's over with.

Perfect outcome.

Splitter made it through the WC without injury and can now start getting settled in San Antonio.

Scola went into beast mode and now we can be entertained by the mini-meltdowns that his performance will cause.

All of this while waiting for Matt Sandwich Bonner to entertain whomever he will be guarding this coming season, and a couple of seasons after that.
