Different style QB...different team...different plays. Please tell me we don't have to go through an entire season of you being an idiot again.

I thought they should have passed more today. They won't be playing Rice level rush defense all year, they need to let Gilbert throw 30 times in a game like this.

Obviously this is going to cause confusion...This offense is going to play very different. They're not in the spread anymore, so the line is going to go to a 3 point stance instead of a 2 point stance. The Horns are going to be able to run the ball a lot better, and you'll see more of it this season. Garrett will have his opportunities, but we'll see more, and better running.

When your running game is rolling like the Horns was today, you're naturally going to defer to that and only pass when you need to and that's exactly what Texas did. They took a few shots downfield out of play action and had some success with it.

What I didn't like out of Gilbert today was a lot of his incompletions were short and behind the receiver. CBs on better teams will pick off those kind of throws so he needs to fix that shit before we get into conference play.

I was at the game today. A few thoughts:

For a Rice 'home' game, Reliant was about 95% burnt orange. I got lucky and scored a ticket to the company luxury suite, so had a great view of the game.

We definitely were not 'rolling' in the running game. Johnson got most of the first half carries, and he was good for running into defenders three yards past the line of scrimmage. No speed and no lateral moves whatsoever. Both Newton and Fozzy were much quicker and made some decent plays, but as Mack said after the game, they STUBBORNLY stuck with the run game. They racked up a lot of rushing yards because they forced the running game. It was not coming naturally, even though the two of them had a few decent runs.

Gilbert has a completely different style than Colt. He is very comfortable up under center and ran most of the plays from there. That is automatically going to make for different play calling. There were two or three throws where he was throwing behind the receiver, but it seemed that at least one was intentional because the defender was over the top. The receivers did not do enough to adjust. And with the focus on forcing the running game, they just didn't need to throw it 40 times today.

Gilbert looked comfortable back there, but didn't get a whole lot of opportunities to throw downfield. There were a LOT of passes out to the flats, and that was probably the one throw that he did not seem comfortable throwing. The passes seem to take forever to get there, and a more athletic defense than Rice would have snagged a few of them. He looked very good going downfield, with one pass that was at least 40 yards in the air that he made look effortless.

It just seemed that Greg Davis again didn't use the weapons that he had in his arsenal. He forced his players to match his game plan instead of vice versa.

The defense started the game over-pursuing everything, and local kid (I live in Cy-Fair) Sam McGuffie did a really good scatback impression and Rice worked the ball down the field rather well. After the first two series though, Muschamp had it figured out and set the changes in place that pretty much shut them down. In addition to the one defensive TD, there were two dropped picks out in the flats that were gauranteed touchdowns.

Overall, Texas played uninspired and didn't seem to bring their A game. Part of that I blame on the coaches, because the play calling was just way too safe. Part of it was Rice, who played with a very fast pace and with really good intensity in the first half. Part was the players, who just didn't seem interested in this game. Part was RIce getting lucky, with both of their TD's coming at the end of each half. One a fluke play, the other off a late UT turnover during scrub time. But as Mack said after the game, they know what they need to change before the home opener against Wyoming.

Cody "fat and slow" Johnson sucks. Newton ain't much better. How a top school like Texas can only have shit running backs along with no tight end is insane. WTF are they doing recruiting???

Nice response dummy. Either you are blind or stupid if you think Texas has good running backs. Look at the other schools playing today....80% have better backs this year than Texas. Hell the bama 3rd string back could probably start for the Horns.

Mac Brown you moron...stop making ESPN commercials and do your job. Where is the dominant tight end??? Where is the RB you can count on???

Once more, learn to spell Mack. Second, we use more than one running back. Yes, we need a new RB..everyone knows that...and we'll be getting a good one from Steele next season. But our running game looks much more impressive this year than last. Do you know how to do anything except bitch?

Son I expect excellence....looking like the Horns gonna be mediocre at best. I'm guessing 4 losses. Hopefully they can re-tool next year. Let's pray the stupid run calling was done on purpose and they plan on opening up the passing game up more soon. You ain't running against real teams in the Big 12 with those crap players and running plays.

How about some screen passes? WR screens? Passes in the middle of the field???

First, Texas went through several years of Scaife and Finley at TE. Irby was taking over last year before someone decided to blow his knee up. So it's not like a Mack Brown offense has never had a tight end set.

Second, if you would have bothered to display any reading comprehension in this thread, Mack (see, you just type one more letter at the end and you won't seem like a dumbass) stated that they were being stubborn and purposefully running the ball today. It was not that effective in the first half thanks to Johnson. He rarely played in the second half and they moved the ball on the ground much better.

Focusing on the running game and not being able to pass the ball are two entirely different things.

I was at the game. I did not see all the running plays called because they felt they didn't have a passing game. In fact, it looked very much like they were purposely not trying to wing it all over the field, and I saw body language from Gilbert that would support it.

Third, the running game suffered last year because Charles bolted a year early and Johnson/Whitaker/Newton were not ready to handle the load. Next year, Steele will be on the team, although we probably won't get Green now because they won't want to split carries.

This year, Newton and Whitaker are going to get a chance to prove they can be feature backs, and a first game of the season on the road against Rice was a good way to test the running game. I'm not saying I am happy with the results, but you are reading WAY to much into this.

After the first three series of the game, Rice was no longer in it. Texas misses two FG's and the D drops two pick-six. That is 20 points they left on the field because of their own mistakes, not because of anything Rice did. Rice gets a legitimate FG, a fluke hail mary tipped ball TD at the end of the half, and a garbage time TD at the end of the game. This game could have been 54-3 as easily as it was 34-17.

I thought the run game was mediocre today. If they had hit 250 rushing yards with 2 more tds then I would say the run game was dominant. This is a confidence game and they should have had a little more in Gilbert. He should have thrown at least 7 more times in this game. IMHO.
