After a seven-month stalemate often marked by acrimony, the New York Jets and holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis agreed in principle Sunday night on a new contract, the team announced early Monday morning.

Contract terms weren't immediately available, but a source said it is a seven-year contract that can void to four years.

GM Mike Tannenbaum was scheduled to address reporters on a 1 a.m. conference call. Revis, whose holdout lasted 36 days, is expected to fly to New Jersey later Monday to sign the contract. Barring any holdups, the All-Pro cornerback will be on the field in time to have a full week of preparation for the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, a week from Monday.

Also, by missing 36 days, Revis accrued $578,305 in fines. It is not sure how the fine will be assessed or if it will be rolled into the contract.

Credit coach Rex Ryan with a big assist.

In an attempt to end the impasse, Ryan flew to South Florida over the weekend and met with Revis and his uncle, former NFL defensive lineman Sean Gilbert. Gilbert once sat out an entire season in a contract dispute with the Washington Redskins.

Ryan met most of Sunday with Gilbert and Revis. By the time the meeting ended, both sides felt that progress had been made and their differences could be bridged. At that point, negotiations heated up between the Jets and Revis' New-York based agents.

Revis has a home in South Florida, which he went to last week after spending more than a week with family in his hometown, Aliquippa, Pa. Ryan and Revis have a good relationship, and the Jets were counting on Ryan's persuasiveness to change Revis' stance.

Ryan was scheduled to announce the final roster cuts on a conference call with reporters, but he was a no-show because of an "appointment," a team spokesman said. Tannenbaum handled the call.

A team spokesman Sunday night refused to confirm the meeting with Revis, saying the team would continue to honor the confidentiality agreement. The two sides agreed to a gag order in early August, when the public posturing turned into a mudslinging contest. The meeting was first reported by the New York Daily News.

Revis, who has made $15 million in his first three seasons, was due to make $21 million over the next three, including $1 million this season. He wanted to become the highest-paid cornerback in the league, seeking about $16 million per season. According to family members, he was angry at the organization because he believed they reneged on a promise to make him the highest-paid corner.

The Jets previously offered Revis a 10-year, $120 million contract and a four-year, $40 million deal, but there was only a small amount of guaranteed money in each proposal. Revis' agents countered by asking for $162 million over 10 years, with more than $40 million guaranteed.

On Friday, several players told ESPNNewYork.com they were resigned to starting the season without Revis. One player said it was "a tragedy" that the stalemate got this far.

It's a four year deal and pro football talk says it's complicated as fuck:

The numbers are trickling out on the Darrelle Revis (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=4155) contract, and for a four-year deal it's fairly complicated.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, here's the basic data on the Darrelle Revis (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=4155) deal: no signing bonus; 2010 base salary of $7.5 million; $18 million option bonus due on the first day year of the first league year after the 2010 league year ends (the language reflects the potential for a lockout); 2011 base salary of $7 million; 2012 base salary of $7.5 million; and 2013 base salary of $6 million.

That part is simple. Deciphering the guaranteed money makes it more complex.

Due to the 30-percent rule and the reallocation rule, the two sides had to apply some creativity. Before the option is exercised, the deal carries $13.772 million in 2013 base salary guaranteed for skill and $13.772 million in 2012 and 2011 base salary guaranteed for injury. The pre-option bonus base salaries ($10.06 million in 2011, $11.894 million in 2012, and $13.772 million in 2013) reduce to the lower numbers after the option is paid.

Following the exercise of the option, Revis has $6 million guaranteed for skill and $7.5 million guaranteed for injury.

And so, as of right now, Revis has $13.772 million in guaranteed money for skill and $13.772 million guaranteed for injury. As a practical matter, he'll get one or the other, if he's cut or if he suffers a career-ending injury.

After 2010, after he has earned $7.5 million in non-guaranteed base salary, he'll have $21.272 million earned or guaranteed.

After the option bonus is exercised, he'll have $25.5 million in his pocket plus $6 million guaranteed for skill and $7.5 million guaranteed for injury.

After the 2011 season, he'll have $32.5 million in his pocket, with $6 million still guaranteed for skill and $7.5 million still guaranteed for injury.

And that's the key. At the end of the 2011 season, Revis will have $32.5 million. That translates to $16.25 million per year -- higher than the $16.142 million that Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=779) will earn this year.

So how do the Jets protect themselves against Revis deciding after 2011 that he doesn't like the fact that he'll get only $13.5 million over the last two years of the deal? The answer is sufficiently interesting to justify a different post..

The website also says a tantrum by Ryan helped get the deal done:
