Forte's is surely a retirement.

Derosa is curious, to an extent, because he's relatively young (53), had just become a playoff crew chief in 2010, which is an elite position that only 6 officials get each year. But then again, in that role, he faced that controversy in Orlando for throwing a ball at a fan.

I thought Corbin had been something of a rising star among the officials, but he seems to have capped out and was on his way back down the ranks.

Phil Robinson was a pretty bad official, in my mind.

The latest changes to the N.B.A.’s officiating staff include four significant departures and one very large addition.

Four veteran referees with a combined 72 seasons of N.B.A. experience have retired or moved on: Joe DeRosa, Joe Forte, Sean Corbin and Phil Robinson. The vacancies will be filled by five Development League referees, one of whom will stand out for his size if nothing else.

Kevin Cutler, who is 6 feet 8 inches, will be one of the two tallest officials in N.B.A. history. (Michael Henderson, who was also 6-8, worked for the league from 2001 to 2005.)

Cutler, 42, became a curiosity in N.B.A. arenas last season when he refereed a half dozen games as part of an initiative aimed at preparing top prospects. Four others who participated in that program — Brent Barnaky, Nick Buchert, Josh Tiven and James Williams — have also been promoted.

Steve Javie, one of the league’s best referees, nearly joined that group but will return for a 25th season. Javie, 55, considered retiring after a painful knee condition forced him to miss most of last season. He has decided to return, however. Javie has worked 210 playoff games, including 21 finals games.

Dick Bavetta, who turns 71 in December, is returning for his 36th season despite persistent rumblings that the league is pushing him to retire.

Bavetta has officiated an N.B.A.-record 2,434 games and has never missed an assignment. But he has slipped in the referee rankings over the past few years.

DeRosa, 53, spent 21 seasons in the N.B.A., officiating 114 playoff games and 11 finals games. He worked two games in the 2010 finals, indicating that he still rated as one of the league’s top officials.

Forte, 66, worked in the league for 22 seasons — including 134 playoff games — but his final season was cut short because of an injury. He is the only official to have worked an N.B.A. finals game, an Olympic gold medal game, an N.C.A.A. championship and a high-school state championship. His son, Brian, is also an N.B.A. referee.

Corbin, 44, spent 17 seasons in the N.B.A. and worked 51 playoff games. Robinson, 49, worked 12 seasons in the league but never became a playoff referee.

The league did not specify the reasons for any of the departures.
