Found the negative...

Scanning negative #0095...

Damn...

I forgot how long this scanning can take. Been a while since I used it. This 35mm film strip has 5 frames on it and say it will take 9 minutes. This old Epson Stylus CX7800 scanner does a true 2400 dpi and will scan a pseudo 9600 dpi. I would like a faster scanner, but I haven't seen one that will do 35mm film for some years now. I do all my negative scans in 2400 dpi and save in BMP. each frame becomes a BMP around 20 megabytes and about 3311 x 2095 pixels.

10+ minutes later...

Here is one of the towers I used to maintain. At least I never had to climb this one.

No shit, Sherlock. People also make mistakes, slip, or fall off ladders all the time. The difference being, they usually don't do it from a quarter of a mile in the sky with no life line. The physics of climbing might be the same, but several other things come into play at that height like fatigue, asphyxiation, anxiety, and vertigo. Not to mention trying to make that climb with a bag dangling from you, holding the weight of two bowling balls? I climb the ladder every year to put lights on the house, and sure doesn't seem like the same thing to me.

Most well-oriented humans can balance and walk on the width of a curb without difficulty. Take that curb off the street, and put it 500 ft in the air with no guard rails, and I bet you'd find that feat a little bit more mind boggling.

Fair enough. Forgive me if I have somewhat of a 'need to see it to believe it' attitude :lol but some people are admittedly just wired that way. Obviously this guy must be in order to go out and do this for a living, no safety lines or anything. Other people wouldn't make it halfway up the ladder without becoming paralyzed or passing out due to fear, and I can't be sure I wouldn't be one of them.

I'll climb a ladder all day long, but you won't catch me going anywhere near one like that.

Especially the "ladder" that is just the little rungs jutting out of the side of the pole?

Yeah, fuck that.

Have you considered the atmospheric conditions at 1700 feet in the air, not to mention the fact that you're on a pole with no protection, at times working in the proximity of storms?

Ah sons I knew it was only a matter of time before one of the tough guys who (online) are not afraid of doing anything and try to belittle those who are. Son I bet you also train in mixed martial arts don't you? (but only since the UFC became popular of course).. Wow son that is awesome. I bet you can really kick some ass. Son I bet you also probably own a truck and you have a really macho sticker on the back that reads something like "Size MATTERS!" Next to all of your "Tapout" stickers of course. Son I bet you're also one of those drivers who even whenever someone ahead of you is already driving 10mph over the speed limit you still make sure to ride up on their bumper in your big ole truck to show how badass you are.

Son I just read you like an open book. Let me ask you this though... does doing things like that and making idiot comments make you feel better about yourself? Or perhaps bigger downstairs? Son there is no need for all of the nonsense. God bless

Back before satellite TV houses out in the country would put antennas up on really tall triangular shaped towers made out of cheap ass thin wall electrical conduit...I hired some guys to put up a 200' tower one time and those boys were stone cold crazy. They came out with a trailer load of 10' sections and a long coil of rope. Set the first one in a little concrete and then went to work...climb the first section, pull the next section up with the rope, hang on with their legs and balance the section up over their heads and wiggle it down on the section they were hanging on...then climb to the top of that one and repeat the process...By the time they got half way up the tower was probably swaying 10' back and forth...and probably more than 15' by the time they topped out at 200'...I wanted to puke just watching him...

Nice backtrack!! :lol

I honesty think you dont realize how high 1800ft is without a constant safetly line....

I've skydived before and can easily scan pictures to prove it.... Skydivers jump at the extreme lowest altitude of 2500ft... and thats with a parachute.... just 2333ft more than the height of this tower... Thats rougly 7.75 football fields in length... That would give you, traveling at terminal velocity, MAYBE 16 seconds difference or so extra of free fall than if you fell off this tower for the average skydiver.

Falling off this tower, WITH a chute, it give you roughly 600 yards... Thats 6 football fields.

Falling from this tower, you would have about 20 seconds before you hit the ground.... Not enough time to deploy a chute safely unless you got luck on your side. You would have to pull the chute almost immediately... Then You would have to clear the tower to get to safely... then hope for a favorable wind... Then you have to worry about terrain.

And this is all if the wind works in your favor and doesnt slam you back into the tower.

DarkReign
09-21-2010, 09:31 AM
To be clear, I'd straight soil myself on that climb. No exaggeration, particularly in those transition areas.

Honestly, I would probably freeze after two steps and take the elevator back down. Watching that video made me uneasy, couldnt imagine doing it IRL with wind, texture and weather to contend with.

Fuck. That. Too.

The sway at those heights is what would stop me in my tracks. I hear (because I dont work in a corporate environment) that on the top floors of tall buildings, you can actually feel the building sway in high winds.

Me, no likey.

I have done a couple of rock climbs in my lifetime and I have to say that just watching this video made me feel uneasy and dizzy. My leg muscles feel 80% more weak just looking at that film. It gave me the feeling like my knees will go out any second especially when he got to the area with just the pegs.

I don't think in that video they said anything about it but I can only imagine of how much that thing sways up that high.

I have opposable thumbs and fingers that will only release their grasp if my brain tells them to. There is no way I would fall off or be scared of falling off that 1800 ft ladder.
