View Full Version : Vick named the new starting QB in Philly

Pistons < Spurs

In a stunning move, the Eagles have announced that Mike Vick is the team's starting quarterback.

Specifically, the Eagles disclosed the information via the following text message: "Andy Reid names Michael Vick as team's starting quarterback. Reid will be available on conference call with media at 6:30. . . . Reid will also be available for cameras following the conference call at the NovaCare complex."

The tone and content of that communication strongly suggests that this isn't merely a situation in which Kevin Kolb is still recovering from the concussion he suffered nine days ago. Indeed, Jay Glazer of FOX reported over the weekend that Kolb was cleared to play on Saturday; absent another blow to the head since then, Kolb should be fine.

It appears instead that Vick is taking over, and that Kolb will be a highly compensated backup.

The next question becomes whether the Eagles will try to take advantage of the uncapped year to sign Vick to a long-term deal.

Stay tuned.http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/21/eagles-give-the-ball-to-vick/

So you trade your franchise QB, pimp up your young #2 as the future all offseason, reiterate that statement as early as two days ago and then decide to abandon the plan completely for a guy who has been nothing but inconsistent his entire career?

Nice play, Jabba.

Eagles source says there was "no setback" for Kevin Kolb and he is cleared to play. "Vick is just playing too well and has all off seasonm"

I actually feel bad for Kolb. Philly's front office obviously made a horrible judgment underestimating how much McNabb made that offense go, so Kolb was put in a position where it was impossible to succeed. He did nothing wrong, the retarded organization that thought it'd be OK to get rid of a franchise QB is to blame.

I've always been a huge fan of Vick and personally thought he unrightfully went to jail for killing dogs while other NFL players have killed people while driving drunk, but yet got no jail time. I'm glad to see Vick making the comeback hes made so far...hopefully he keeps it up. :tu As for Kolb, he hasnt proving shit yet, so might as well ride the hot hand. It's about winning games NOW, not later...

True, because there is a big difference between 4-12 and 7-9. And that's not even taking into consideration getting rid of the best QB on the roster, who while not truly elite is a much better NFL QB than Vick has ever been.

Say Vick is back to his old self the rest of the season; flashy yet extremely flawed as a passer. Do you re-sign him to a multiple year deal? Let him walk and go with Kolb, who is most assuredly going walk after next season? Tag him when it's not even clear if he has the goods or not?

Don't know about you, but the whole thing screams clusterfuck to me.

FYI - The Lions have had the worst defense for three consecutive years and Vick wasn't as good as his stats suggest.

I saw the same QB I saw five years ago. Elite talent that makes too many poor decisions throwing the ball.

It'll catch up with him against better defenses.

It always has.

Yes, which means the Eagles could easily make it far with Vick as their QB, thanks for proving my point. Besides Vick's winning % is pretty good, you're making it seems like he's a perennial loser.

Sure, as long as your point that a top 15 defense usually accompanies an inconsistent QB on a deep playoff run. At some point, those QBs are forced to make smart decisions and all have faltered.

Vick is great when he can just use instinct and pure athleticism against bad to average defenses. Against better defenses than can limit his running ability and force him to make good decisions in the pocket, he's never been able to beat them consistently as a passer.

FYI - Philly ranks dead last in points allowed and just gave up 32 points and 444 yards to a Shaun Hill led offense.

09-22-2010, 10:37 PM
PrePrison Vick said he never studied the game much at all. Relied solely on athleticism.

New Vick says he is studying and Reid backs this up.
Completely different Vick and he's looked very good in both games so far.

So to assume New Vick will be just like Old Vick is wrong.
And for all the negative comparisons, how was Atlanta with Vick and without him? :wakeup

The fact that players who killed people while driving drunk did not go to jail does not mean that Vick shouldn't have gone to jail, just that they should have.

Does Vick spike the ball by lifting it above his head with both hands and then slamming it into the ground?

He did the usual repentant bit, and I hope he truly meant it. It would be refreshing to see him turn his life around (and learn how to manage his money so he isn't broke after his NFL career, for that matter).

SHAMELESS fantasy football plug:
From purely a FF league standpoint, i'm quite happy, where in one of my teams i'm rolling w/ Vick,Andre Johnson,DeSean Jackson,Percy Harvin,Arian Foster,Steven Jackson and Vernon Davis.....with Kyle Orton,T.Hightower,Jonathan Stewart,Devin Hester and Demaryius Thomas on the bench. Yeah, a 10 team league.

I neglected drafting a QB until midway thru & took a flyer on Favre. Needless to say i dropped his ass for Vick after week 1.

Vick and McNabb have more or less the same atributes and deficiencies, they're both mobile QBs with a great arm and good efficiency in deep throws but in general neither is particularly accurate. Seeing how well McNabb did under th Eagles' system, I think that Vick could also benefit from it.

DUNCANownsKOBE2

only difference is that one is a law abiding citizen, albeit overweight, while the other one broke the law to stay "hood" and has never accumulated the success McNabb has. But I do agree, this is a much better system for Vick to play in and its showing.

If only Jim Johnson was still around running the 'D, this team might be dangerous down the stretch.

I only said they were similar (mobile, great arm, not that accurate), McNabb is a better passer/pocket QB, Vick is more dangerous with his feet.

Vick never had the stats McNabb did, but he also never played under this Eagles' system before, I think he could benefit from this and have the best statistical season of his career as a passer.

PHILADELPHIA - The quarterback controversy began before Kevin Kolb threw for 326 yards, three touchdowns and a 133.6 passer rating that made Andy Reid give the stats sheet a second look Sunday.

It started when Michael Vick and his cracked ribs, damaged cartilage and electro-stim healing tools arrived late to work, according to sources.

The Eagles kept Vick inside rather than allow him to snort the testosterone in their 31-17 romp over the Atlanta Falcons.
