View Full Version : Phil Jackson: Talent doesn't always win

Ashy Larry

Way back in June, Phil Jackson agreed to come back for one more season with the Los Angeles Lakers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=lal). In his sights was another opportunity for an NBA championship and another shot at a three-peat.

Seems an eternity ago. So much has changed -- namely the rise of a certain formidable foe in the Eastern Conference. The Miami Heat (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=mia)'s mega free-agent acquisitions of LeBron James (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1966) and Chris Bosh (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1977) -- teaming with Dwyane Wade (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1987) -- have all the markings of an instant championship contender.

"They got great talent," Jackson said in an interview with ESPN 1000 in Chicago. "There's no question about their talent they have. But, talent doesn't always win. The team that shows the best teamwork will win it. We think that [the Lakers] have established something. But, if [the Heat] can unite -- and build quickly -- they might be able to do it."

Jackson teams have won 11 of the past 20 NBA title and the coach is always able to add a little historical perspective.
"I always refer to when Wilt Chamberlain was traded from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and that put [Elgin] Baylor, [Jerry] West and Chamberlain together -- three of the top scorers in NBA history -- and they never won a championship together the four years they were together," Jackson said.
"It's not always scorers and talent that wins it. But it's teamwork that does it."

Phil never started his happy horseshit so early. Usually didn't commiss until the second round. He's preemptively early this year.

Gloves are off, pretensions cast aside, he's assholin' it now to the end.

Not a bad strategery.

It's his last year. Might as well go out with a bang .... hopefully not a thud.

Look, Phil may be the zen master but his EGO is massive. I'm sure he was looking for the main story this season to be Phil's last stand ...but LBJ and his band of merry men have stolen that. But as a coach i think he is glad his team has a "target" to shoot for. Last year unlike many of the "sheep" that post in this forum, you know the ones that thought the season was over when LBJ got Jamison to join his crew (LO they were many, where are they now?...oh yeah the san antonio Heat fans) ...Phil knew the Celtics were the target. He even Told Paulina to "meet us" in the Finals. Now he has his eyes set on a new target and so the mind games are starting early ...

What he REALLY meant was;

The team that has the TALENT, the TEAMWORK---AND the REFS...will win it.

Not sure what a dead coach has to do with it. Again, it's not surprising to hear Phil having to explain why it takes more than the most talent in the league to win, considering he's won each of his titles with the most talent in the league. Now at least he has a potential excuse that he doesn't have the most talent in the league.

West, Baylor and Wilt were all in their 30s when they joined together, IIRC..it's comparable in the sense that it's putting 3 great players together, but the actual circumstances are obviously different..

Comparing something that happened in the NBA 30+ years ago is stupid in any context you want to use it in..the NBA sees changes every few years, let alone 20-30 years ago..

Then there's the obvious factor that the 3 Kings are all in their primes..

Who are the Kings?

Bosh is over-rated, and while James and Wade are both fabulous their current body of work is one combined title. To me the Lakers are still the favorites.

Per Jerry West…Wilt & Elgin went at it from day one…BOTH had enormous egos…West could not understand the rift & stayed out of it…The year after Elgin retired the Lakers won an NBA title…

If that is legit Kool, would be willing to pay a "fair" price for the playoff series of the title years since 1980. Have the Lakers Legacy collection but there were some great Playoff performances I would love to get my hands on. There was a comeback against seattle in the late 80's that i have only seen live on TV and one on NBA's greatest games.

Also, never understood why the NBA doesnt make that stuff availble for purchase. I have seen some stuff (games on DVD) on Ebay but it's overpriced. They could make some good money on the Lakers, Celtics and especially MJ.

Bullshit. Red did it when there were like 8 or 9 teams in the NBA and no free agency. That meant his stacked teams never got broken up.

Imagine if Phil's Bulls team didn't get broken up by Mike going on a 2 year hiatus. They would have won 8 straight (but I'm glad they did so that he could come coach the Lakers).

^This was the 1997-1998 Laker squad - who would mop the floor with the 2010 Miami Hype. Ultra talented, 2 deep at every position. STACKED in other words. What happened in the WCF? Swept by the Jazz.

I'm wondering why the media insists that the Hype are going to win it all this year. Oh well, I guess we'll see if they even make it to the Finals to find out what they are made of. :wakeup

Your dad should have worn a rubber.

That team won 61 games in a WC that featured players like Karl Malone, Stockton, Barkley, the Admiral, KJ, the Dream, etc. They still got swept.

Shaq - all star

NVE was inconsistent, he can go hot and cold very quickly, one of the worst all-star selections ever. Kobe was an all-star because fans loved him. He got voted in. The Lakers' forward positions got abused in the WCF by Malone. How was that team 2 deep at every position? LMAO your dad should have worn rubber. Good players do not suck so bad in the playoffs like Nick Van Exel and all-stars do not average 13.8 points and 6.9 assists and shoot only 41.9% from the field.

Nick Van Exel averaged 11.6 points in the playoffs in 98. Disappeared like Mo Williams in the playoffs and it was the only year he made an all-star game. That 98 Lakers team was Shaq and arguably with Eddie Jones, who scored 17 points per game in the playoffs and shooting with good efficiency.

Nick Van Exel had a 17.8 PER in the regular season that year, definitely not all-star efficiency and a horrible 11.5 PER that playoffs. A definition of a playoff choker from his playoff appearances. Eddie Jones showed up that year in the playoffs improving from his 18.0 PER to a 20.6.

Speaking of Kobe Bryant, he was the only one in that group who could be considered young and his skills have not developed fully yet. He was also not an all-star caliber player, playing only 26 minutes a game, although he had good production for that 26 minutes. His PER also dropped from 18.5 in the regular season to 12.8 in the playoffs. How is that team stacked?

The only guy doing the heavy workload in Shaquille O'Neal with a 28.8 PER in the regular season, putting up monster stats and carrying the team like a MVP caliber player. In the playoffs, he had a great 31.0 PER but lost because of shitty teammates like Nick Van Exel who couldn't lift his game in the playoffs and only knew how to choke.

Great fucking stacked team with Shaq carrying everybody's ass in the playoffs. It is like calling the 2009 Cavs stacked because of LeBron James.

It's a case of Daddy, being always the daddy.

LkrFan is so retarded he doesn't get the point that low efficiency players paired with a superstar doesn't win a championship, whether they are age 20 or 30. LMAO thinking NVE is an all-star caliber player.

As the Ancient Hawaiians say, "Hiding your talent is like living on the beach and putting your sundial in the shade."

If you live on the beach, who gives a shit what time it is?! Hawaiians are stupid.
