San Antonio Spurs Invite Three To Training Camp
by Scott Schroeder on Sep 23, 2010 2:42 AM EDT in NBA Training Camp
The San Antonio Spurs have added three new players to their training camp roster this week, bringing in former second round pick James Gist, veteran sharpshooter Kirk Penney along with Marcus Cousin, a 6-foot-11 center out of the University of Houston, according to a source close to the situation.

LMAO Marcus Cousin. Just because it sounds close to DeMarcus Cousins doesn't mean you can fool any of us.

Marcus Cousin played in Israel and Turkey last year and his stats were quite bad:
- In Turkey: 5.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg in 10.9mpg with 7 games played.
- In Israel : 2.7 ppg, 2.0 rpg in 8.2mpg with 16 games played.
It really looks like Cousin will be just a practice body and will have no shot at all to make the team.
For the moment, 17 players, who will be at the TC, are known. I hope there will have a 18th one who will be a SF with some good defensive tools.

Kirk Penney?
I'm a bit surprised. I thought he will for sure get some decent offers from Euro teams after his impressive performance at the WC. can't see him sign with the Spurs if he doesn't see a realistic chance to make the roster. (which is interesting considering Spurs also have Neal and Anderson, who both offer the same shooting plus more athleticism. Penny is pretty quick though.)

Spurs 2010 Training Camp Roster, so far (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/09/23/spurs-2010-training-camp-roster-so-far/)
48 Minutes of Hell
Training camp is right around the corner for the San Antonio Spurs, and the rest of the NBA. Thankfully for fans, that means the regular season — and actual basketball — is not far behind.
But before the regular season tips off, there are still questions to be answered (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/09/21/the-spurs-unfinished-offseason/). And we can expect most of those to be resolved in the next few weeks.
Below is the preliminary roster for the Spurs’ 2010 training camp, as no official word has come from the team yet. According to Ridiculous Upside, three non-roster players received invites (http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2010/9/23/1705544/san-antonio-spurs-invite-three-to) to training camp this year: James Gist, Kirk Penney and Marcus Cousin.
James Anderson (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/06/24/2010nbadraft-james-anderson/)
DeJuan Blair (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/09/16/dejuan-blair-future-all-star-when-tim-duncan-retires/)
Matt Bonner (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/07/16/matt-bonner-sandwich-hunter-basketball-jones/)
Marcus Cousin
Tim Duncan (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/08/26/is-pau-gasol-a-better-power-forward-than-tim-duncan/)
Alonzo Gee (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/07/26/alonzo-gee-san-antonio-spurs-las-vegas-summer-league/)
Manu Ginobili (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/05/09/to-the-moon-it-starts-with-manu-ginobili/)
James Gist (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2009/06/16/an-interview-with-james-gist/)
George Hill
Richard Jefferson (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/08/16/richard-jefferson-san-antonio-spurs-plays-cutting-to-hoop/)
Curtis Jerrells (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/07/12/nba-summer-league-spurs-gee-blair-temple/)
Antonio McDyess
Gary Neal (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/07/22/san-antonio-spurs-sign-gary-neal/)
Tony Parker (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/09/03/tony-parker-is-28/)
Kirk Penney
Tiago Splitter (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/08/30/united-states-70-brazil-68-tiago-splitters-solid-first-impression/)
Garrett Temple (http://www.48minutesofhell.com/2010/07/19/garrett-temple-gregg-popovich-favorite-player-george-hill/)
James Gist is the most interesting invite to training camp, for me. With his size and athleticism, he’s got the combination to fill spot minutes as both a backup small forward and a 6th big man. Training camp this year is big for Gist.
Again, this roster is not official.

Splitter is making the team.

Duncan, Bonner, Dice, Splitter, Blair
Jefferson, Manu, Parker, Hill, Neal, Temple, Anderson, seem to be the 12 active players on most nights.
Cousin, Penny, and Jerrells have no room on the team.
Gist and Gee just do not seem to have room to make the active roster (yes, they could make the 15) unless Neal shows to be a complete bust.

DeMarcus Cousins does not look incredibly impressive on first glance from a situational perspective, but has some extremely interesting attributes about him and fares pretty well against his peers in the top-ten. His ranks are skewed by lower usage players from smaller conferences in the lower part of our rankings.
Cousins ranks well above average in terms of usage at 14.3 possessions per-game, despite playing only 23 minutes per game, and his 0.99 PPP ranks him right around the average for his position. Cousins does stand out in how small of a proportion of his possessions he turned the ball over (13.4%) and how frequently he drew free throws (22.9%, 3rd). Clearly, his ability to use his body allowed him to clear out space and create contact underneath. He also runs the floor extremely well, getting out in transition (10.8% of his possessions) more than any other center except for Mac Koshwal.
In post up situations, Cousins ranked right around average with his 49.6% shooting, but he ranked third in drawing fouls, doing so on an impressive 26% of his back to the basket opportunities. Though Cousins proved capable of creating his own shot, he was at his best when crashing the glass. He created 3.2 possessions per-game for himself rebounding his teammates’ missed shots. ....
DeMarcus Cousins’ measurements are phenomenal. He stands 6-9 ½ without shoes, with a gigantic 7-5 ¾ wingspan and a standing reach of 9-5. He’s a physical specimen at the center position, with measurements similar to that of Brook Lopez (just much bulkier), and superior to those of Dwight Howard (who was 18 at the time he was measured and could have very well grown since), Greg Oden and Al Jefferson. ....

Got to admit that was pretty dumb! Have had a long day! Cousin sounds even more like training camp fodder but he has some Euro experience.

Doesn't deserve its own thread, but RU reports that the Spurs worked out Greg Stiemsma before he decided to accept a camp invitation from Cleveland.

Agree. He was definitely more effective when he was on the court.
Plays a simple and controlled game... kind of like Tim Duncan.
Seems to have the lift to be able to block shots, he got two of them.
Doesn't really have a post game... but nobody expects him to do that.
Now if he can develop a mid range jumper, then just maybe he's worthwhile.

His defensive positioning seems very natural and already NBA-level. That's what stood out most for me.

Yeah, looks like he's right on schedule. Maybe he can spend a year or two in Austin and then go to a division rival.
